Part of the US state of Florida is pictured in this image from the Sentinel-1A satellite.
The peninsula sits between the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The large body of water at the top of the image is the freshwater Lake Okeechobee. Covering about 1900 sq km, the lake is very shallow with a maximum depth of about 4 m.
Across the land area we can see geometric patterns of agriculture and infrastructure, while the very lower section of the image shows part of the Everglades National Park.
The Everglades are the United States’ largest subtropical wilderness, originally covering some 10 000 sq km. This area features shallow, slow-moving water and is abundant in a plant called sawgrass that becomes so thick it makes the water barely visible, earning the Everglades the nickname ‘River of Grass’.
Home to diverse plant and animal life, including alligator, crocodile, Florida panther and manatees, the Everglades have been designated a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve by the UN.
Other notable locations visible in this image include the cities Miami, in the lower right, and Fort Myers on the left.

This image, also featured on the Earth from Space video programme, was captured on 13 November 2014 by Sentinel-1A’s radar in Interferometric Wide swath mode. This is the default mode over land, and has a swath width of 250 km and a ground resolution of 5 x 20 m. The image was also acquired in ‘dual polarisation’ horizontal and vertical radar pulses, from which the artificial colour composite was generated.

Lower Falls and its associated dam are one of three waterfalls on the Genesee River between downtown Rochester and Lake Ontario. Kodak world headquarters is in the background at the right. Photographed from the Driving Park Av. Bridge.
Photographed using a Sony A7R with a Nikkor 43-86mm f/3.5 lens.
Its design accentuates the regular geometrical pattern formed by the jets. 505 of them, rising above each other in seven tiers, make up a four-sided watery pyramid, which looks as though it had been moulded by the skilful hands of an artist. The pyramid is raised on a square, three-stepped base of marble, which stands in the middle of a square granite-lined pool with sides eleven metres long. Around the perimeter of the pool runs a marble balustrade adorned with vases and urns. Opposite each face of the pyramid there is an opening in the balustrade for a three-stepped cascade flanked by two tiny bridges spanning the perimetric channel.

This is the second time I've visited Lower Beamer, and the first time hiking downstream. Definitely easier than the upstream hike.

Lower Falls at Yellowstone's "Grand Canyon" area.
This exposure was using 250 shots taken at ISO 100, 36mm, f/11, 1/125 sec.
Used the Sony in camera app Smooth Reflection for long exposure. This app essentially stacks the photos for you and finds the average of the photo stack, the same thing you would normally do in Photoshop. This allows you to do a long exposure in bright daylight without having to us a ND filter. It does have it limitations but it can be quite handy.
Since Vernal Falls was half in the sun and half in the shade...and wasn't very full, I decided to focus on the lower part of the falls that was in the shade. I stopped several places along those 600 steep :) granite stairs to take a few shots from my monopod, which luckily, also came in handy as a hiking stick.

View of the Lower Falls in late morning light that nicely illuminates the northern canyon wall. This photo was taken from the lower observation area at Red Rock Point. The trail is paved, but very steep and with many switchbacks, about a 1/2 mile roundtrip. Take water, the hike is worth it. It is the yellow rock, visible on the north rim here, from which Yellowstone National Park gets its name. Just to the right of the falls is an observation deck on the brink of the falls. The people on the deck provide some idea of scale. Smoke from the forest fires are keeping part of the sky somewhat grey. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming USA.
In contrast to the crowded Upper Antelope Canyon, known for specatular sunlight beams during the midday, Lower Antelope Canyon is considerably less crowded and boasts spectacular colors in the early mornings.
