One of the loop trails we took at the Desert Botanical Garden took us past this little pond. I don't know how natural this specific pond may be -- there's a canal just behind it that was built in 1912, suggesting all the hydrology anywhere near here has been shifted around -- but it does a good job of mimicking the kind of spring-fed pond that existed in the Gila River Valley before the white folks came and built the street grid. This is very much a desert landscape, but little oases like this dotted the landscape and were well-known to both the native animals and the native people.

Built in 1922, this Tudor Revival-style building is clad in red brick with decorative terra cotta trim and reliefs, three-over-one double-hung windows, and two retail shopfronts at ground level, flanking the entrance door to the apartments above. The building is one of many excellent early 20th Century mixed-use structures that line Delmar Boulevard in the vibrant Delmar Loop section of St. Louis.

Our first stop! This is my first time on the Fruit Loop, so I didn't really know what to expect, other than a lot of apples.
