Built in 1897, this First Renaissance Revival-style structure was designed by Alfred M. Hedley as one of the original nine stations on the Union Loop in Downtown Chicago, which was constructed to allow seamless operations and turn-arounds by the various elevated rapid transit lines that were operating in the city at the time. The station features the only restored original station house on the Loop, with the other stations having been significantly altered or closed and consolidated during the 20th Century and early 21st Century. The station houses are clad in metal sheeting with fluted corinthian pilasters, decorative window trim, one-over-one double-hung windows, decorative interior woodwork, and cornices with dentils, and sit above an open mezzanine, with metal canopies at the platforms lining the tracks. The station was restored in 1985-1988 and 2016-2018, and today is the best-preserved historic rapid transit station in Downtown Chicago.

Alpine Lakes Loop (2.7 miles r/t):
This nice loop links two sub-alpine lakes, Teresa Lake and Stella Lake. Due to the altitude these are fairly close to the treeline, which has the nice effect of making the greenery near the lakes stand out against the bare alpine backdrop. Teresa Lake has good views of Wheeler Peak, while Stella Lake has a gorgeous flower lined, meandering stream feeding it. Both are great places to relax under a tree by the water, which is appreciated at 10,000 feet. This trail is easily combined with the Bristlecone trail, and shaves a good mile off of the combined distance.
