Howth is located on the peninsula of Howth Head, which begins around 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) east-north-east of Dublin, on the north side of Dublin Bay.
Howth is located in the County of Fingal.
Howth Head is the location where Leopold Bloom proposes to Molly in James Joyce's Ulysses.
Howth is also a popular destination for cyclists, joggers and hill-walkers alike, particularly on weekends. One common attraction is the 6 kilometer long Cliff Path Loop. The loop takes about two hours to complete and is rated with an easy to moderate difficulty.

The Verlot Public Service Center was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930's. It consisted of a Forest Service Ranger Station, a Rangers Residence, and several work buildings. Today it serves as the Information Center for the Mountain Loop Highway.
