Khiva was one of the wealthiest cities on the silk route. The huge buttress, given scale by the local dog, was built of mud and clay. It was as much an expression of power as a defence. This little gem is well worth a visit, the old city is pretty much intact. Rumour has it that the heroes of old were buried in the walls to add more strength. The famous Amu Darya, The Oxus river that was legendary even in the time of Alexander the Great is about 20km away. It used to be closer, giving Khiva prominence in this region.

A fabulous late summer evening looking across the Hope Valley from Hathersage in England's Peak District National Park.
Frosty, sunshiny scene taken while walking Marnie in our local park this morning, on firm, frozen ground. No mud ! A bright and cold day followed, with no wind. So glad to be alive on days like this !

Love this song which expresses the feeling so well :
I hope you like it, thanks so much for your faves and comments. Each one is appreciated immensely. Have a wonderful weekend -- I hope your troubles are few, my friends.
An April evening walk from our hotel, on our way up to The Cairngorms. Great light, great shadows.I like the layers of grasses, trees and greens.

Evening sun produces the longest shadow of the tree at Michaelstone-y-Fedw between Cardiff and Newport. Three shot Pano.
A nice cross hatch effect of the shadows... Waiting for offers from Bill Gates for the new "Windows" :)
I photographed my friend's horses (she has seven!) three years ago and almost forgot about them. Funny how the quarantine gives you time to go through old photos/files and make you remember not only a certain time or day you spent shooting but also how it felt to have been there - and that's at least one cool upside.
Sunrise at Talacre Beach.
Fairly chilly this morning on the dog walk. Empty beach for well over a hour so Gracie got to run around which in turn meant I could take a little more time over things. Great morning all round.

A low setting winter sun filters through the trees surrounding an old graveyard, casting a golden glow on everything. #graveyard #headstones #winter #snow #goldenglow #twilight #filteredlight #shadows #longshadows #landscape
Clouds parted juuuust enough at the end of an overcast day to make a spectacular Golden Hour. Photo taken in rural Augusta County, Virginia.
This is my 3,333rd post here at Flickr.
Looking south, about 35 minutes before sunset. Low tide, about minus 1.5 ft.
This was the second pier built here. The first was a commercial pier, built by George Hearst in the 1860s, I think. The stubs of its piers are still visible at low tide, below one of the Hearst warehouses. It burnt down.
This pier, still in use, was built in the early 1950s, not long before this became a State Park and Beach. Needs work, but it's open.
A sunrise shoot on a serene Embleton Beach with a lone piece of seaweed washed up on the beach, pointing towards Dunstanburgh Castle.
The sand was peppered with the footprints of the various birds, but beyond this was relatively pristine.
There’s a light that is shining in darkness,
While we wait for the dawning of day;
And it cheers us along on our journey,
Till the shadows shall vanish away!
So we’ll wait and watch for the dawning,
The day of eternity blest;
Then take the wings of the morning,
And fly away to our rest.
From the sure word the prophets have spoken,
There is light flashing forth through the gloom;
For the Scripture can never be broken,
And the King in His glory will come.
Now we sing ‘mid the darkness and shadows,
And we pray and we watch for the dawn;
Till the Day Star, in glory arising,
Shall betoken the coming of morn.
We are not of the night nor of darkness;
Let us walk, then, as children of day;
Our weeping shall be for a moment,
And our joy shall ne’er vanish away!
(Horace Lorenzo Hastings, 1831–1899)
This time of year it’s possible to catch the sun low in the trees in the centre of this local hill. However, the light can be blinding to drivers and so I had to be very conscious of traffic. Luckily it’s an extremely quiet road; I had a total of three vehicles pass during the time I was there. And of course one of them was right at the point when the sun was slap bang in the centre, and so I had to move and recompose😣.
Despite all the years that I’ve visited the Lake District this is the first time I have shot this particular, very popular, tree on Rydal Water.
It had started off as a clear frosty morning and I had hoped for a bit of mist on the water, but unfortunately it never materialised in any quantity to have an impact.
Shot as a 6 shot panorama just after sunrise.

It's been a very mild winter and have not had much cold or snow to speak of. And, with what snow we've had lately, it quickly melts as the temps get into the low 30's or a little higher. All I can come up with at this point is a shot I took last month at a local park before the sun departed...and took the snow with it, eventually.
This image was shot around the same time as my last post. I noticed that the receding light on the hills above Rydal Water was providing some great light and shadows, and so I zoomed in tight.
If you look close you can just make out a sheep munching beneath the main tree.

Belchen mountain offers on clear days a wonderful view to the Suiss Jura and the Suiss Alps (like in this image).
There are actually 5 mountains with the name 'Belchen', referring the
Belchen Triangle, tripoint of Germany, France and Switzerland
