The Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingii) is one of the most striking hummingbirds of the Andes, and this individual was photographed at La Minga Ecolodge in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Perched on a weathered branch, the bird displays its iridescent green plumage and elongated sapphire-blue tail, features that shimmer differently with every shift of light. I framed the subject against a softly blurred background to isolate its form and enhance the subtle contrast between feather detail and the muted tones of the forest.

From a technical perspective, my goal was to balance speed and detail, ensuring crisp focus while maintaining natural light tones. The branch’s texture complements the smooth gradient backdrop, creating a composition that highlights the bird’s delicate lines. For me, this image reflects not only the beauty of the species but also the challenge of capturing its fleeting stillness. It is a reminder that patience and precision are as vital as equipment choice in bird photography.

Travelling out far

Long exposure on this lake in Glacier National Park. Pretty scene there between these trees.

One of New Zealand's many un-named jumping spiders

I am so delighted that I eventually got a shot of this very fast and active bird. I see them quite a few times but I never seem to be able to get a good shot of them as they move so rapidly and restlessly. Mind you, I wouldn’t be as frustrated if they were only one of them but they seem to travel in groups. Another irony was that I had just come from a beautiful habitat of theirs, Tomnafinnoge Woods, hearing them, looking out for them and seeing a blur of them, with no luck. I get home and getting out of the car, I notice on the chestnut tree opposite my house, I see a whole bunch of them and certainly took the opportunity to get a few shots.

Looks like it has some moss in its beak to take back to the nest.

I posted this mirrored bridge last year but thought I would try something new. My granddaughter kindly indulged me with a backyard leap and this is how I repaid her trust.

I hope she makes the leap.

Long eared owl getting blown about in the strong winds , Her eyes are partly open and her ears are blowing to one side . These were my first encounters with these beautiful birds

A long-eared owl opens its eyes a bit after preening itself. I also got some cute preening shots :-)!

Something I never thought I`d see. Beautiful wild Long-eared Owl in my friends amazing Garden. Only had a window of a few seconds to get a couple of shots before it flew.

"Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)"

The Hollies

Saturday night I was downtown

Working for the FBI

Sittin' in a nest of bad men

Whiskey bottles piling high

Bootlegging boozer on the west side

Full of people who are doing wrong

Just about to call up the DA man

When I heard this woman sing a song

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes

My temperature started to rise

She was a long cool woman in a black dress

Just-a 5'9, beautiful, tall

With just one look I was a bad mess

'Cause that long cool woman had it all

[Instrumental Interlude]

I saw her heading to the table

Like a tall walking big black cat

When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy

'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at

Then suddenly we heard the sirens

And everybody started to run

A-jumping out of doors and tables

When I heard somebody shootin' a gun

Well the DA was pumping my left hand

And a-she was a-holding my right

Well I told her don't get scared

'Cause you're gonna be spared

I've gotta be forgivin' if I wanna spend my living

With a long cool woman in a black dress

Just a 5'9 beautiful tall

Yeah, with just one look I was a bad mess

'Cause that long cool woman had it all

Had it all

Had it all
