This image shows why the species is called a Long-eared Owl. Just a few second before this image was taken, this owl was harassed by a mob of crows. It was an experience to observe how the owl changed it shape (slimmed down, got taller) and the tufts got longer.
This owl should make everyone happy in the Bay area.
Long-tailed Ducks are rare as far inland as Oxfordshire, and smart males like this are even more so. Also unusually this is a long-staying bird. Its only blemish - lack of a long tail!
I took this photo in the early afternoon. december sun was already very low and create long shadows, two hours later it was completely dark.
