It's a very happy Wing Wednesday for me when I've managed to get a shot of a Large Bee-fly which showcases those wonderful Dark-edged wings that give it the other name it is also known by - the Dark-edged Bee-fly! Happy Wing Wednesday everyone!
Mayfield Lavender Farm, a popular place for having a picture taken! First discovered it while walking on the London Loop.
From the other side of Coldharbour Lighthouse, definitely a bit cloudier sky so perfect black and white contender.
Bridge 183 on the Grand Union Canal, Uxbridge, on the London Loop. Having gone past it in the car on the A40 many times I decided to go and find it on the bike on Easter Monday. This also gave me a chance to explore this stretch of the Grand Union Canal around Uxbridge up to Denham, a part I'd not done before. The weather was nice in the morning and early afternoon before the rain came later.
Dark brown with creamy white patches on wings, the Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) flies in partially shaded woodland with dappled sunlight. It is a common and widespread butterfly.
The male usually perches in a small pool of sunlight, from where it rises rapidly to intercept any intruder. Both sexes feed on honeydew in the tree tops and are rarely seen feeding on flowers, except early and late in the year when aphid activity is low.
The caterpillar foodplants are False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum); Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata); Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus); and Common Couch (Elytrigia repens).
The Speckled Wood can be seen in woodland rides and glades, gardens, parks and hedgerows. It seems to prefer slightly damp areas where there is tall grass and some shade. These butterflies can often be seen perching in sunny spots, from where they spiral into the air to chase each other.
