This was the location of a very 'near miss' disaster on our way down the canal to Leeds. It is a staircase of 3 locks and the rule is that there must always be an empty lock between boats. We were descending when some fool behind us starting the filling the lock behind us. These old wooden gates are not water-tight and a flood of water threatened to overwhelm the back of our boat. We just about escaped, though the back of the boat and engine were flooded and we had to call out the boatyard we had hired the boat from. The British Waterways guy that turned up put .. 'potential fatalities' on the insurance form. I had not been frightened until then!!
Anyway this shot was taken on our return journey, we moored for the night just below it; it looked glorious and benign in the morning light.
Lock and Dam 5 on the Upper Mississippi River in Minnesota City, Minn., has been dewatered this winter to allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, to complete major maintenance work on it. Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 58 located in Newark, NY. Alas, the scrap metal company, just continues to mess up this site. You would have thought that they would have made an effort to keep their junk off to the side, not right smack in front of the lock. They surely were aware of the clean-up project. It's not enough that they turned the south chamber into a covered storage building. I guess we should be happy they didn't get a bulldozer and demolish it. Located off Route 31 on Lyons Street in Newark, NY.
I have started Messing with panoramic photography.. only getting used to the ae-lock etc on my d200 I am impressed with the detail to which photoshop put the 8-pictures together. I forget my 10-20mm sigma lens at home either reducing the shots to 2 or even 1-pic and then I might have tried to Over and under expose the photographs wich in theory would have probably still resulted in me taking approx 9 pics any way .. oh well.. try, test and step back .. insults welcome.
