This is Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 51. This is a view of the west end of the north chamber. This lock was built in 1847 and is a double chamber lock with the south chamber double length on the west end. This lock locked down to the west, thus the usual three overflow openings are on the east end. This lock replaced the original lock, located in the Village of Jordan, which was demolished when the Jordan level was extended. It is located approximately 2 miles west of the Village of Jordan on the Onondaga - Cayuga county line, on the north side of Route 31.

Lock & key, well it's not a key in the heart, but it didn't look good when I first took it. So this is my end result. :)
"Liebesschlösser". People put those locks on bridges, and throw the key in the water, as a symbol for their love.
there use to be a nice cypha peice here... then BEN started a peice and left it unfinished which made it look crap ( would of been good if it was finished) so i put up a peice.

A lock is a device for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The distinguishing feature of a lock is a fixed chamber whose water level can be varied; whereas in a caisson lock, a boat lift, or on a canal inclined plane, it is the chamber itself (usually then called a caisson) that rises and falls.
Locks are used to make a river more easily navigable, or to allow a canal to take a reasonably direct line across country that is not level.
Use of locks in canals

Early completely artificial canals, across fairly flat countryside, would get round a small hill or depression by simply detouring (contouring) around it. As engineers became more ambitious in the types of country they felt they could overcome, locks became essential to effect the necessary changes in water level without detours that would be completely uneconomic both in building costs and journey time. Later still, as construction techniques improved, engineers became more willing to barge directly through and across obstacles by constructing long tunnels, cuttings, aqueducts or embankments, or to construct even more technical devices such as inclined planes or boat lifts. However, locks continued to be built to supplement these solutions, and are an essential part of even the most modern navigable waterways.
These are shots from the old Toronto Zoo monorail they no longer use. You can access the monorail from the surrounding forest off the Rouge River in Scarborough. There is about 3-4kms of monorail you can walk on in the Rouge before entering the Toronto Zoo at either end of there property line. The monorail has some overgrowth from nearby brush but still clear enough to access and walk on.
