Lock in state of advanced disrepair. Unlike much of the Canal de Nantes a Brest, this short stretch in in ruins. It was actually really spooky standing in the bedding while imagining barges floating by. The canal was commissioned and built by Napoleon to circumvent the British naval blockade of Brittany. On certain stretches convict labour was used. The canal towpath has been made accessible to cyclists, which means Brittany can be traversed from east to west and vice versa with easy gradients over a distance of approximately 200km (125 miles).
Blindhouses were built to be used as lock‐ups, to confine wrongdoers for short periods. They were called
blindhouses because they have no windows.

This Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 18 in Cohoes, NY. This view shows the head of the lock and the spillway entrance, looking east. This was a double lock and it was put into service in 1842. It was built largely of Amsterdam stone and was in service until about 1916. It was the last and the highest lock in Cohoes. The south chamber is partially filled in. Shown here is the spillway entrance which controlled the water level above the lock. The Cohoes locks were never lengthened during the later enlargement. Lock 18 is on the National Historic Register. It is located on North Mohawk Street across the street from the Cohoes Falls in Cohoes, NY.
The north wall of the south chamber of Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 51, looking east. Lock 51 was a double-chambered lock, with the south chamber double-length on the west (foot) end. It locked down to the west, so the usual three overflow openings are on the east end. The lock which was built in 1847 had a 5.732 foot descent to the west. It replaced the original lock that was in the Village of Jordan which was demolished when the Jordan Level was extended. Located on the north side of Route 31, at the Onondaga/Cayuga county line, two miles west of Jordan, NY.
