Different types of lock picks are used for lock picking.
1.Small Hook – Hooks are designed to pick one pin at a time typically in pin and tumbler locks. They can also be used to “rake” over pins, but will scratch pins and leave footprints.
2.Large Hook – Used for pin and tumbler locks that have larger tumblers. The longer reach is required to push the long tumblers past the shear line.
3.Single Ball – Ball Picks are used in disc tumbler or wafer locks. The purpose is to be able to move the individual disc/wafer regardless of which direction it moves.
4.Double Ball – Same as the single ball, and should be used when the single ball is giving you trouble.
5.Small Half Diamond – Diamond Picks are used to pick pins that have little variation in length. Stick with the hook if you have big variations.

The lock to our cottage had this motif of an eagle-headed naked woman, with the keyhole between her legs. Antique? Maybe. Obscene? Definitely!

For those of you unfamiliar with the 'lock phenomenon' (those living with too little or just enough water around!): a lock is an instrument to regulate water levels. In a system with canals and ditches, designed to keep low lands dry, the levels of one canal will get (too) high. In order to get rid of the surplus a lock is installed. In large canals used for transport a ship can use a lock to get from a lower to hiogher level canal or the other way around. I found you a good descrition of its workings here
The ship canal infrastructure still works but in some places is showing its age. This lock gate has lost its walkway and looks a rather sad.
This is a special "hockey puck" User's Group lock on a gate owned by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM padlock is inside the steel box, below.
Note how the key allows the lock cylinder to slide out, thus releasing the bar that is inserted through the bottom surface of the lock.

Llanthony Lock - was built in 1871, to allow boats passing up and down the River Severn avoid the new weir just south of here. The weir was constructed to ensure a minimum depth of six feet in the river above Gloucester. The lock was closed in 1924 due to the walls moving.
The area is being restored by the Hereford & Gloucester Canal Trust, and currently the only public access is the footpath through the lock itself!
