This is Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 59 in Newark, NY This is the upper entrance looking east. It was a double chamber, single length lock and it was built in 1841 with a second chamber being built in 1874. The south chamber is partly buried. The north chamber is empty and it is possible to walk halfway down it before you reach swampy conditions. The three openings in the head of the lock are spillway entrances which release the excess water and control the water level above the lock. The lift of the lock was approximately 8 feet. In canal days this lock was referred to as the Upper Lockville Lock. It is located northeast of the center of town and is located across from Barge Canal Lock 28-B.

Taken at Dunkin Donuts, New York, USA.

Inspired by these Locks! :)

I was happy to win the Pears Vintage jigsaw Macaroni last week, but whilst saving the detailed images I thought that I'd seen the cut before. I found the one I was thinking of - another Pears jigsaw, Naughty Boy or Compulsory Education by Briton Riviere. Both came from the same seller, with similar packaging.

Vintage Pears 741pc Naughty Boy Compulsory Education, Briton Riviere 2repl, 24.5x17in.

Top left, Lower-Left & Lower Centre. Note the line with oval 'eyes' on it, the 'EC-lock & key', & swastika figures.

Llanthony Lock - was built in 1871, to allow boats passing up and down the River Severn avoid the new weir just south of here. The weir was constructed to ensure a minimum depth of six feet in the river above Gloucester. The lock was closed in 1924 due to the walls moving.

The area is being restored by the Hereford & Gloucester Canal Trust, and currently the only public access is the footpath through the lock itself!

This is a pic i took near my home....i juz liked the rust...the old look... even though the body of the lock looks new...lol

someone worked at this lock (chaining my canoe to a tree) with rocks for quite a while before giving up & shifting attention to a friend's canoe chained to a slenderer tree, ultimately breaking the tree & making off with his boat.

surprisingly, despite their work that popped a widget out the side of the lock, deformed its shape & jangled the guts enough that its key no longer worked, it held – though i was later surprised to find that the shackle of "hardened steel" gave easily to my boltcutters.

Looks like you could cut that lock with nail clippers if you put your mind to it. But I guess it fits neatly in your pocket, and maybe nobody really ever steals unicycles...?

I love how the salt water rusted the lock's engraving.

There are 10 locks between Basel and Speyer from between 9 and 14m in heights- it takes great skill and sometimes patience to wait for the turn to enter the lock. Sometimes there is a line up of ships and barges- and they all fit- just... there is literally inches of clearance.

The view across the sundeck of the ship- the lock is drained
