This is a shot of the central divider ( west end) of Lock 51 and it is pretty much covered by foliage. This Enlarged Erie Canal Lock was built in 1847 and was a double chamber lock, with the south chamber double length on the west (foot) end. It locked down to the west so the usual three overflow openings are on the other (east) end. This lock had a 5.732 foot descent to the west. It replaced the original lock that was in the Village of Jordan, which was demolished when the Jordan level was extended. It is located two miles west of the Village of Jordan, on the north side of Route 31, at the Onondaga/Cayuga county line.
