On a river cruise through Russia in 2004, I took this from my kite line just as we were approaching a lock. Forward motion kept the kite aloft; when the boat slowed, the kite came down -- and a good thing too.

Anthony/Anto - Last of the Dublin Lock Hards (unofficial parking supervisors), now pretty much redundant.

This is Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 62. This shot was taken up on the towpath trail looking down into the north chamber, looking east. This lock was originally built in 1855 and consisted of two separate chambers. In 1877 the south chamber was lengthed. The lock was abandoned in 1918. It is part of a town park that few people seem to know about . The towpath trail is maintained but the lock has deteriorated somewhat. The old lock is shrouded in weeds, just waiting for the day when water is restored to the Old Erie. The whole lock is there except for the gates but is not very visible, sort of hidden on a trail from French Road. It is located in Pittsford Plaza near Wegmans (near the very back, up the hill ) or along the trail from French Road approximately one mile north of the village of Pittsford, NY.

An unrestored lock.

The Fourteen Locks were completed by 1798 under the direction of Thomas Dadford Junior, as part of an arm (the Crumlin Arm) to link the main Monmouthshire Canal established in 1792 and also engineered by Dadford Junior, (linked in 1812 to the Brecon Canal at Pontymoile to form the "Mon-Brec") with collieries and works at Risca. The flight of locks rises 167 feet (51 metres) in just half a mile (804 metres), and is regarded as one of the wonders of British canal engineering. At the inaugural committee meeting of the Monmouthshire Canal Company in 1792, Dadford requested 200 wheelbarrows, 6 dozen casting tools, and 6 dozen shovels for this mammoth task.

The lock of hair given to me by my first girlfriend who lived next to lock 74, Grand Union Canal

Whilst clearing my things from the attic of my erstwhile house a few years back I found a box of letters, diaries and other ephemera. This was tucked in the back of my 1974 diary completely forgotten. The letters went in the skip ... didn't have the heart to throw this in too, she must have gone to a lot of trouble to make it. www.flickr.com/groups/a_catalogue_of_small_things/
