Perseids 💫 turned into a thunderstorm ⚡️⚡️. I thought I'd give 2017 Perseids a chance, but obviously my photo session turned into something completely different. It was raining hard and hence very difficult to keep the lens dry. If you look carefully (but please don't!), you can see some water droplets in the image. I used 'Live Composite' mode and the photo has 120 x 15 sec exposures stitched together inside the camera.

29 0.5sec frames composited in camera using Olympus Live Composite Exposure Mode. Portland, Oregon OM20320 - Happy Fireworks Fridays!

A late late night lightning galore from 1-2:30am.

For image above I ended the Live Composite exposures (for trams, streetcars, etc) before each of their various light trails crossed the frame completely, then combined the various Live Composite exposures together using masks and lighten layer mode in Photoshop. There are no lights on the trams, their light trails consist of reflected light of the buildings etc in the scene. The streetcar in the lower left came to a stop and opened its doors (and I ended that exposure there before the streetcar moved again), versus the streetcar just above coming towards the camera which did not stop, just the exposure of its light trail was ended. Thunderstorm and rainbow over Ulm in the evening, 2017

The fact that such colors could be seen that evening is due to the low position of the sun and the longer path the sun's rays have to travel before reaching our atmosphere. The longer the path, the more particles there are in the way of the light, causing it to be filtered more and more. The red component remains, resulting in the strong red color.

The long exposure mode “LiveComposite” on my camera further enhanced the color effect. Nevertheless, this is how the eyes perceived the moment.

These are the remaining three blocks of the iconic public housing that were built post war and pre independent singapore; the precinct is currently under going demolition. These blocks were affectionately called the "chap lau chu," meaning 10 storey in hokkien and were also featured on the old singapore $1 note.

After two years of online only events Light the Night PDX 2022 had an in person event this year. Although less attendance than pre-pandemic events, and with a laser show instead of fireworks, it was still interesting to photograph. Was on my way to buy a step up ring for an up coming trip but chanced upon this view and decided to shoot instead.

Lee Filters Little Stopper

This year, the mosquitoes are particularly aggressive in the pastures at night, yet watching the fireflies' dance made it worthwhile.

In the distance, there was occasional lightning that added to the drama.

Braving the insects was a small price to pay for witnessing the light show.

Took this ~13 minute long exposure while waiting for the aurora, which showed up two hours after I left. Looking north from the trail that leads to the tunnel at Mitchell Point, from bottom to top are: Columbia River, lights from a train passing through the tunnels along SR14 on the Washington side of the Gorge, and the sky with Cassiopeia in the lower right, and part of the big dipper in the upper left. The 42%l lit moon was 16º above the NW Horizon when this exposure was started, and all but washed out the Milky Way; need to go back on some moonless night and see how dark it might get here. 79, 10sec frames composited in camera using Olympus Live Composite Exposure Mode. A second image from my past trip to NY/NJ last month. This one is using Olympus' "Live Composite" mode. The base exposure is 60s, but in reality I left the shutter open for about 10 minutes to make this picture, which allowed for great movement in the clouds and nice streaks from the boats going by (and one very faint airplane high above).

I had planned to photograph from the pier by the fire boat station near the Hawthorne Bridge, but some families had already set up chairs over an hour and half ahead of the show; which turned out to be great, since the breeze was blowing smoke from the fireworks in that direction, and later a fire boat with extremely bright hazard lights parked itself on the river there.

So I walked north along the East Bank Esplanade to this location just south SE Yamhill, which turned out to be facing dead on to the side of the fireworks barge. Another plus with this location is built in seating along the edge of the pathway allowing you set up the camera comfortably off the pathway with the camera right in front of you while sitting there. I had never photographed from this close to the barge before, where the higher fireworks end up almost directly overhead, so I quickly turned the camera vertical and even then had to tilt the camera back a good bit, and still some of the higher fireworks went out of frame. The building (behind the right of the fireworks) with the stripe of green light along the top is 18 stories tall.

This years fireworks came in a greater variety of colors, styles, and forms than recent years making for an impressive show. 17 0.5sec frames composited in camera using Olympus Live Composite Exposure Mode. Portland, Oregon OM25841-Happy Fireworks Fridays!
