Design Exquis is an exercise in "random design", inspired, it seems, by a drawing game played by the surrealists.
A designer is given an object, and has one month to make a design inspired
by that object.
Then he has to pass his object on to the next designer, but does not reveal
his identity. Nor may he reveal any details about the design - what it
represents, how it has been made etc, all must remain secret.
Designer number two has one month to create his response.
Then he passes that on to the next designer.
In this exercise, for Clerkenwell Design Week, there were four designers. I
spoke to three of them, and I have to confess that without their
explanations, I would have been mystified.
Dominic Wilcox received James Plant's Breathe lamp, but was unable to fathom its meaning. So he decided to challenge the simple assumption that only lightfittings can be fitted into ceiling lamp holders.
He created Sound Bulbs, which adapts a vintage radio to plug into a ceiling socket, and a ghetto blaster to plug into a table lamp.

Experiments to capture different lighting moods using the same subject matter and lighting. in this case an off camera 580 Ex trigered with ST-E2.
Snooted speedlight created an edgy and more dynamic mood compared to the Lightfitting 1 image which used diffused light from a triggered 580 EX through an umbrella.

After all these years, I never realised we had a dog, resident in our TV/hifi cabinet. Dougal? Muttley? Scooby?

I set the selftimer to 2 seconds, held the camera under a lightfitting with six exposed bulbs and tossed the camera towards the light.
We've been slowly adding finishing touches to our home for the last 5 years. Light fittings were on our list but I'd never got excited about deciding what fittings should go where.
Then Masters had 40% off light fittings and we decided to just go and choose some from the ones they had in stock.
We ended up with 10 light fittings for all the living areas and bedrooms.
Emily really wanted a pink light so that narrowed the choices down a bit. Lucy loves her chandelier and proudly tells everyone about it! Edward's rocket light reflects in his mirror and windows, so it looks like there are lots of rockets.
Phill couldn't leave it there, so he got a Lifx bulb for our room. It may not be a clap activated light, but it's pretty cool to be able to turn it on and off, dim and change the colours via our phones.

Bird {with exasperation}: When IS our mummy going to fix all the lights in our house?
Julia : Well, she is very busy and there is a problem with the voltage ... or something like that.
Me : Years ago I had working lights in some of the rooms - but a pet rabbit ate the wiring !!
This is a light I designed for Saatchi & Saatchi (where I work in Cape Town). I had an artist named Brett Murray make it for me.
This was a common sight- note that the Hotel has received an award as recently as 2007 but it looks completely derelict? The moment a building is not used in Bulgaria, it is stripped of anything of worth, windows, doorframes, lightfittings etc for use elsewhere.

North London contemporary redesign with pure white interiors by architects Thomas Griem and Liliana Potes
This is a bulkhead mounted on the stairs and beneath its frosted cover lies a very pretty array of LEDs.
That's as much comment as I've got the spirit for right now.
