The brighter bulbs are newfangled fluorescent power-saving bulbs, and the darker ones are classic incandescent ones. The new ones are brighter but use a fraction of the power.

I still think light bulb manufacturers conspire to make bulbs burn out faster than they need to so they can sell more bulbs, but at least they're helping us save money on our energy bills!
