Day 253 of 365

"Victory for Mankind"

I'm not saying that the electric fly swatter is the greatest thing since sliced bread.......but I've never witnessed a piece of bread kill and cook a fly at the same time. We shall let history decide. We have occasional periods of massive fly infestations, and we still don't understand why. I have carnivorous plants, we've used fly paper, spray, fly bags, I've fixed the screen, I've taped every hole to the outside world....but the flies continue to invade our home. So, I just discovered the electric fly swatter, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that it has changed my life. Ironically, there is not a single fly in the house, but I'm sure that will change in the near future. I should certainly digress. The lighting was accomplished with three strobes. I used my trusty Light Blaster to project an image of a bull's eye target on the white seamless background. Next, I positioned a speedlight with a purple gel behind and beneath the swatter. It is the complementary color to the foul yellow color of the swatter, so I thought they would work nicely together. Lastly, I tightly snooted a speedlight to light just the company's name. Very lastly, heed the warning on the tag....this is NOT a toy. Assuming the device used just enough zapping power to down a housefly, I had to play the role of human guinea pig and test it for myself. Have you ever smelled the odor of burning human flesh? Ok, it did not hit that hard.........but it hurt. Please be warned. Thanks for buzzing by!!

Day 215 of 365

"Portrait 215"

Having shot a tomato like a human, I guess I've now shot a human like a tomato. Thank you, human!!! As was the case with yesterday's tomato, today's tomato was shot with four lights. The key is my Light Blaster with a yellow gel at camera-left. There is a strip box with a green gel working on the back of her right shoulder. There was a little light leak, and we both liked it....so we kept it. Next, there is a small softbox with a magenta gel behind, her over her left shoulder. Lastly, there is a blue-gelled strobe hitting the white background. I typically detest a piece of light hitting the nose from behind, but in this case, I thought it worked. I guess the difference in color makes it acceptable. Oh, the hard shadow on our lovely model's head was caused by the hard edge of the yellow lights modifier. It was not intended, but if you ask me, it was intentional. Thanks for dropping in!!

Day 235 of 365

"Citizen Niece"

Today's portrait was inspired by a portrait of Orson Welles in 1940, shot by Ernest Bachrach. As is typically the issue with these daily posts, I never seem to have enough time to tweak the details. There is a distinct shadow on Welles' chin, however, my light was too close to our subject, and I did not have the space to flag the strobe in the way that I would have liked. So, there are three lights working here. Our key is a gridded speedlight at camera-right, and it has been taped off in order to only light the width of our lovely model's face. I employed my Light Blaster with a window frame slide on the background, and there is a gridded beauty dish next to the camera, providing a bit of fill light. While I am fully aware of the shortcomings, it was a learning experience, and I will return to this concept one day. Thanks for peeking in the window.

Day 163 of 365

"Image 163"

For today's session, I photographed another old friend of mine. I've had this gargoyle of Notre-Dame for years. I thought it was about time for his portrait to be taken. I recently purchased a new set of slides for my Light Blaster, so it seemed only appropriate to use the crucifix. The litle guy is lit by a snooted speedlight from directly below. It is the tradtional "monster lighting" setup, and made sense for the subject. I then slapped the slide in the Light Blaster, and tilted both the camera and the Blaster. I was thinking 'Citizen Cane" for this image. He should run for office! Thanks for glaring for a moment.

Day 288 of 365

"Enjoy the Flavor....Through Your Neck"

I've never once inhaled a cigarette!! I tried once in my youth, but it was unsuccessful.....and completely disgusting. However, when traveling, I enjoying picking up unique and eye-catching souvenirs. I found this pack in Thailand. The image on the pack brought to mind a warm country breeze, so I Light Blasted an image of such a scene on the background. The pack itself is lit from camera-left by a small softbox and speedlight. The pack is being lit by the back edge of the softbox, allowing the light to wrap around the pack, much like the way smoke fills a room when all the windows and doors are closed. The light is also positioned in this manner to avoid any of it from contaminating the lit background......much like the way in which the 4000-plus chemicals in cigarettes absorb the oxygen in a room. I kept the lighting simple so one could inhale the tang of the image. Thanks for taking a photographic break!!
