If anyone wants some really unflattering and creepy af portraits doing I have cornered the market.

 

Faffing about with the LACE Lightblaster this afternoon using various slides. After many fruitless attempts I wondered what the dried leaves I had squirreled away would look like,

Self-portrait. Had lost the file for several years, finally found it! Used a Lightblaster to project the background image onto a seamless in camera. Love high contrast stripes/migraine inducing aesthetics :).

The creator of the light blaster was generous enough to send one my way last year. I had a lot of fun playing with it. My favorite slides were the shapes and grids. Recently I had been thinking of different ways to use the Light Blaster. I'll be posting some of my shots from a recent photoshoot over the next several days.

 

For this part of the session, I intended on using the Lightblaster to project the slide onto the background and the model(s). Using a black landscaper's weed-preventing cloth for the background, I had the subject(s) sit on a table that was also covered with a black fabric. This left the models as the lightest things in the frame, meaning the projection stood out well on them (while remaining visible, but not over-powering, on the background).

 

The slide used shows a beautifully decorated room (something out a palace, I think).

 

The model shown is Samara Emily Ham (MM#1786384). I've worked with her on several occasions and she is always a pleasure to have in front of the camera.

 

strobist: 1 Canon 580EX, near camera axis, shot through a Light Blaster. I also used two rim lights positioned behind the subject(s) in order to separate them from the background (a White Lightning 1600 with a gridded strip box on both sides). Flashes and/or monolights triggered via Cybersyncs.

 

Note: I ended up pushing this a little harder in post than I normally do. I had to boost the clarity in order to allow the slide to show up better on the dark background.

On the wall behind Kerry, I projected a vaguely art-deco looking pattern using Spiffy Gear's LightBlaster with an AD200 in the back, and a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens on the front. Before the optics in the Lightblaster is a Rosco GoBO. The Lightblaster is down on the floor and angled up to fan out the pattern.

Kerry Walker at the last 1:1 tutorial I did a few weeks ago. This set was all about layering colours, going from broad to localised, cool to warm and dim to bright.

 

Here we started with a broad blue wash from an overhead softbox. No grids on this to ensure a wide spread, and lots of spill onto the white background.

 

Next we have an orange fill light from below, that shows up wherever the blue light doesn't reach.

 

Then, two red edge lights in the back, left and right.

 

A yellow light is coming from camera right to illuminate Kerry's face (tight, warm and bright light). I used the Lightblaster to focus this through a 50mm lens.

 

Finally, on the background, Im using another projection unit with a pink light, through an 85mm lens, and an abstract pattern gobo.

 

The sparkly bits are added in post, using BorisFX Optics.

 

1st attempt to make speedlight projections on buildings

Shot with Fuji X100S + Light Blaster with Canon EF 50mm f1.4 + Canon EX580II zoomed at 105mm

Using a wide slatted Venetian blind with a FalconEyes CLL-1600-TDX LED spotlight to generate some hard light and so, some crisp shadows. It's a different effect than using a projection system like the Lightblaster with a genuine set of shadows from the light source: ie it's closer than say, the sun or moon, so the angles and thickness of the stripes changes over the image. If you want to simulate sunlight or moon light through the blinds (where the stripes would be parallel for all practical purposes), then you need a projector - or you just get lucky and the sun/moon is out and shining in the right direction.

A variation on the same setup in the library. Instead of a grid, I used the Lightblaster with the circular spot gobo to get a definite edge to the spot of light on the background.

Blinds feature a lot in the old clasic Hollywood lighting style. I think actors in film noir flicks spent a lot of time peering out of them, or being illuminated by car headlights through them.

 

Somewhat ironically, even though our house is covered in them, these are courtesy of Rosco and a Lightblaster speedlight spot projector system.

Shot with that little DIY flash projector, described in the book "Kreative Blitzpraxis" (Galileo Publishing House) ... it works fine as gobo projector and also as slide projector.

Building on previous hard light creative portraits I've done - inspired by Lindsay Adler's work btw - and if you don't know Lindsay - go check out her fantastic work at lindsayadlerphotography.com - I made some custom gobos ("GOes Before Optics") for my Lightblaster to create a slice of light on my subject.

 

I wanted blue tones in the shadow area, and used a small beauty dish with grid, and a mild blue gel, on low power to achieve this. I put an orange correction gel in the lightblaster along with the gobo to counter the blue in the lit area. I adjusted the white balance to get skin tones just a little on the warm side of normal - ie dialing the WB down towards blue.

 

Getting the light strip in the right place is the trickiest bit - and I used the "modelling light" feature on the Nikon flash system that pulses the flash very fast for about 2 seconds so you can see where it will land. The Yongnuo YN622 radio system faithfully sends this instruction so the modelling feature works off-camera too.

 

Incidentally, my initial plan to use the slave cell in the Lencarta SF600 I was using to provide the blue fill didn't work reliably as the light strip was too constrained to trigger it. So instead of using the YN622N-TX on the camera to trigger the speedlight in the Lightblaster, I mounted one of the receivers on the camera. The YN622 receivers, are actually transceivers. Ie they will act as trigger as well as receiver. They have no display though so you adjust the power of the lighting groups blind so it's not really practical for most use cases. However in this case I could just set the light in manual and adjust the power on the speedlight so this wasn't a problem. Now - how does this solve my triggering issue with the big studio light? Well the YN622 receivers have a hot shoe where you mount the remote light. In this case, I mounted the Lencarta WaveSync trigger on top of the YN622 on the camera, and used both radio systems at the same time. Works like a charm :)

Finally got around to using the Light-blaster on an actual shoot :)

 

Using the studio adapter, the Light-blaster is attached to the standard reflector on a Lencarta SF600, and focused with a Yongnuo 35mm f/1.8 EOS fit lens. another SF600 with a small gridded beauty dish provides the key light.
