"Inverted Tomato.....Upside Down"

So, we are growing tomatoes in one of those upside down, hanging things. Here is the first (only) fruit from the plant....as of yesterday. I had been lighting for a moody, human portrait, but decided that I would prefer shooting a tomato over photographing my mug. Our key light is a speedlight shooting through my Light Blaster, with the image of a circle. The slide of the circle helped to control the light. I stuck a yellow gel in it, and it creates the hot spot on the tomato. At the last second I decided to drape a piece of diffusion in front of the light, just to make it a little less specular. By the way, the hotspot gives our subject some shape and dimension. Without that light, the tomato would appear rather flat. Next, I brought in a strip light at camera-left, and it has a green gel on it. The color is subtle, and definitely more evident when I was shooting my white face. Next, there is a softbox at camera-right with a magenta gel. Again, the color is subtle, but can be seen. Lastly, there is a blue-gelled strobe behind our subject, aimed up slightly, giving the blue gradient on our white background. Ironically, this is one of my more involved lighting setups...and it was all for a grape tomato. Had I go into the shoot knowing I was photographing a red tomato, I certainly would have played around with different colored gels. There you have it. Thanks for checking out the fruit of my labor!!

"T-1000 and a Rose"

This evening my wife suggested I use one of her Mothers' Day roses as the subject for the day's posting. Brilliant woman!!! Not sure what to do with the rose, I decided on using liquid metal....just to liven things up a bit. Our key light here is my Light Blaster (a device connecting a lens and a speedlight), and it is positioned at about eleven o'clock. Our fill is a bare speedlight, directly camera-right of the tile on which the subjects rest. It is aimed straight up, and is bouncing off of a large piece of foamcore. When dealing with metal, the reflections tell the story. Without the board, the second light would appear as a specular highlight, just as the key does. The board creates a larger light source (the last thing the light hits or goes through becomes the source), thereby breaking up the almost black reflection in the metal. One can clearly see the light sources in the reflections. Given more time, I would have softened up the reflections a bit. I suspect we will be seeing more of this liquid in future posts. I assume I'll also supply more information as well. Thanks for dripping by!

Day 216 of 365

"Niece"

So, your niece and sister move in from Germany.....what's the first thing you photograph? Your niece's baby teeth, of course!! Thankfully, they were already in a little wooden box, and absolutely no surgery was required. My initial concept was to position them in a snake-like circle. Not sure I had enough teeth, I put them into two simple rows, and explored this approach. I knew I would use a hard light, as I was not about to glamourize the tiny tusks. Once I spot-lit the fangs from above, I knew I was on to something. I used as speedlight and my Light Blaster again, as it allowed the projection of a very hard-edged circle, creating the stage footlight appearance. Then it was just a matter of positioning the light at the proper angle and height. I wanted the light to be symmetrical, and also needed the shadows to be long enough to create some interest. I shot two other scenarios, but ended up going with the first. Fang....k you for taking a look!!
