a level 5 alert fire is the highest level a fire can be gauged. a level 5 requires the assistance of all available firefighters to help control the situation. yesterday i came across this fire incident which was given this status as the conditions, high level winds, water shortage and very dry weather, induced the flames even further. this large fire razed through this community of urban informal settlers in metro manila scorching hundreds of houses that left hundreds of families homeless. firefighters were able to control the fire after 12 hours

The house I grew up in, taken soon after it was built in 1965. A typical mid-century split level home, just about every surburban housing development in offered one.
The south edge of the back deck, where stuff goes to accumulate. This is about a foot or two from our charcoal grill, so lots of ashes accumulate in the wood grains. The "redwood" stain on the cedar was only applied to the top (I TOLD Margaret just use clear cedar stain!). At the bottom of the photo are some decaying cement custom bricks my wife made with too much water, so they are deteriorating rapidly. Weeds are already growing in the little space at the top of the bricks, proving that life is much more powerful than human beings' attempts to shape where and when it grows. One of the things I have learned is that people are very wrong when they think nature is fragile. We live in the middle of a city, and we practically need machetes to cut through the trash trees that are constantly growing in our garden. We have deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, wild ducks, and all manner of wildlife traipsing right up to our porch (raccoons would come to eat the cat food we put out, and the turkeys are a traffic hazard!). I live in one the harshest climates people live in (comparable to Siberia in weather), in the middle of a pretty big city, and I would wager that if we moved away and let nature take over, not much would be left of human beings after a few decades except the concrete buildings and some roads getting overrun with weeds and trees. Our neighborhood would revert to forest pretty quickly. The forces or nature are stronger, in the long run, than those of mankind. That is why we are constantly struggling to overcome nature, I think. In the end, it will win. In the meantime, I will make friends with the neighborhood cats.
