This Welsh Government-funded Natural Buzz project created a pollinator-friendly border of native perennial plants around the perimeter of a grassy play park serving a less-favoured built-up area in Gurnos, Powys. It involved local children and supporting adults from Dyffryn y Glowyr (a Welsh medium primary school), the Brecknock Play Network and the Gurnos Tenants’ and Residents’ Association.
Volunteers enjoyed learning about pollinating insects, how to identify and survey their changing numbers and planting to increase suitable habitat and food sources. Project funding purchased locally-raised, native-species plants, garden tools and bug hotels. Funding enabled Keep Wales Tidy to lead and co-ordinate input from residents and specialist wildlife recorders from National Museum of Wales and Brecknock Wildlife Trust.
Nearly 300 shrubs and trees were planted by 68 volunteers in 93 hours, creating more biodiversity in the park, which retains the same amount of open space for active outdoor play.

Late one night in DC, a pack of Jr & Sr. High students came flooding into the Lincoln Memorial on a spring break tour. I saw their eyes go wide at Lincoln's immense presense, then wander over to the sides of the building to begin reading his famous words. While watching, I mused about how awestruck I had been for the last 10 minutes trying to grasp the weight of Lincolns thoughts and wisdom. And so watching these students begin reading, I felt the same weight and wonder come over these young minds.
