Parents at the North Avondale Branch Library gain tips from a Birmingham City School System teacher on how to help their kids succeed academically, and learn about BPL Summer Learning activities being held in June and July.
Students are taking advantage of the various study, research and hang-out spots available in the new Jack & Mary DeWitt Learning Commons. The $14 million facility officially opened for student use on Aug. 20 and houses the college’s library, peer tutoring and writing centers, audiovisual department and new coffee shop, Common Grounds. The facility was dedicated on Sept. 27.
It is a wooden clock on learning to read time, numbers and counting. The hour and minutes hands are movable. The numbers and objects are removable. Kids can learn to place them correctly in the correct slot. Fun for kid to play and learn at the same time.
Tots at the Avondale Regional Branch Library's Tot Time: Gardens ROCK! shared stories and songs, and then planted carrot, parsley, radish, and flower seeds so to start their own gardens.
Ensley Branch Library kicks off its 2019 Summer Learning activities with 55 youth attending the Paint Your Own Bags program. The kids color their own canvas bags bearing the BPL Summer Learning theme "A Universe of Stories."

Equipment that’s used to operate a poultry house is displayed in the learning center. A section of a feed line is attached to a miniature feed bin with an auger to let guests see how the birds are fed. Part of a water line hangs beside the feed line, just as it does in the house. Visitors can see how water flows through the line and drips into the broilers’ beaks when they tap the nozzles underneath the line.
