FUNNEL VISION
The purpose of this structure is to act as a place for learning and engaging with the natural environment, where the sky becomes your theater to enhance the user's experience with the site. Since the site sits on a high location, the intention with this building is to take advantage of the different perspectives on the sites view. To not obstruct existing views as you approach the building, much of the structure is fixed and embedded underground. The outdoor exhibit space loops around the top of the mound providing 360 views of the site and its horizon. The funnel that vertically pierces the building, pokes out of the top of the slope creating a large circular aperture overhead, funneling down to the water purification system on the bottom floor. The center aperture has multiple functions, acting as a ledge, indoor rainwater feature, and naked eye observatory for the bottom exhibit floor. Other major Apertures funnel perpendicular to the centered funnel to mysteriously peak out of the hilltop when you see the building from a distance while also providing directed views of the sky. Each floor of the structure focuses on different ideas of the site’s different perspectives. While the top focuses on 360 views outdoors, the middle is more oriented and enclosed, and with the bottom exposed exhibit space completely directed towards the towers. The main material of this building is concrte and steel for sturdy foundation and then finished with cement cladding and locally found wood for interior walls and details.
