St. Thomas More Students watch as their CubeSat deploys from the International Space Station

Credits: NASA

In 2012, the students from St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington, Virginia lined up in the shape of a space shuttle in the school parking lot and witnessed the flyover of the Space Shuttle Discovery as it was being retired to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. This awe-inspiring vision was an inspiration to the entire school and a catalyst for them to literally reach for the stars. Thus beginning their quest to build a small satellite, called a CubeSat, that would engage students around the world in Earth observations.

STMSat-1 was launched to the ISS on Dec. 6, 2015 aboard an Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo resupply spacecraft as part of NASA’s Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa) IX mission. Along with CubeSats from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Michigan, STMSat-1 was deployed from the NanoRacks CubeSat Deployer (NRCSD) system on May 16. The NRCSDs are commanded one-by-one, allowing the dispenser doors to open and the large internal spring to be released, deploying the CubeSats into an orbital altitude similar to that of the ISS, which orbits about 250 miles above Earth. After 30 minutes in orbit, the internal timers on the CubeSats allowed their onboard computers to boot up and begin transmitting. The CubeSat teams utilize their ground stations to listen for their beacons to determine the small satellites’ functionality and operational status. Once operational they begin their missions.

On Sunday, October 7 at 7:21 p.m. PDT, SpaceX successfully launched the SAOCOM 1A satellite from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

In this shot, taken shortly after separation, the first stage (in the middle of the picture) has completed (or almost completed) its boostback burn, and the second stage (top left) is gaining speed under its own power.

When the main engines ignite at T-6 seconds, listen to the cacophony of camera shutters all around me. Beyond the cheering and clapping, the sheer density of cameras actuating around me was positively noisy.

Another oddity here is the fact that the audio from NASA TV was being piped over a PA behind me, which included launch sounds. Hence, there is "launch sound" that roughly coincides with the events seen in the video. The actual sound from the launch took over 30 seconds to get to us and was considerably more intense and complex than what got broadcast over the speakers.

This video was taken with my P&S camera just sitting on top of my backpack while I shot over it with my long lens. Hence the lack of level, framing, tracking, etc.

A Discus Launch Glider (DLG) is a radio controlled model sailplane launched using a 'discus launch' in which the glider is held by a wingtip and rotated around the flyer by hand before release. Using this method of launching the average flier can achieve launch heights of greater than 140 feet (43 m), with the better throwers exceeding 200-foot (61 m) high launches.

The discus method of hand launching has now in effect replaced the older 'javelin style' launch, where a hand launched model glider would be launched over-arm, like a javelin would be thrown. The discus launch is far easier, more efficient and less physically demanding than the javelin launch.

Although some DLG designs utilise a traditional built-up construction using balsa wood and covering film, most DLG models are generally now constructed from composite materials, in the form of Kevlar, carbon fibre and glass fibre. Fuselages are moulded in Kevlar/carbon and epoxy, with wings either moulded as a hollow composite shell, or vacuum bagged over a wire-cut foam core.

Most DLG models use aileron, rudder and elevator control, with the ailerons also being used as camber changing flaps for different modes of flight and also as airbrakes for landing. A modern DLG model weighs approximately 9 or 10 ounces (255-283 grams) and has sophisticated aerodynamics. Many pilots use computer radio transmitters with full mixing and flight mode capabilities in order to optimise performance and set up the models for flight as near perfectly as possible.

DLG models are used for both general fun/sport flying and also for contest flying.

I've always wanted to shoot these massive vehicles. In the Sea Launch headquarters building (about 50 yards from where this photo was taken) there is a 1/4 scale WGS satellite model that I built hanging in the lobby.

On the 19th September 1783 Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, launched the first hot air balloon called 'Aerostat Reveillon'. The passengers were a sheep, a duck and a rooster and the balloon stayed in the air for a grand total of 15 minutes before crashing back to the ground.

The first manned attempt came about 2 months later on 21st November, with a balloon made by 2 French brothers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier. The balloon was launched from the centre of Paris and flew for a period of 20 minutes. The birth of hot air ballooning!

Democracy for Scotland: The Referendum Experience was launched at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum on 27th April, 2012.

The exhibition was formally opened by MSP Linda Fabiani and the launch was attended by many of the interviewees who contributed their recollections of the 1979 and 1997 devolution campaigns to the Devolution Referendums Oral History Collection at the Scottish Political Archive

Democracy for Scotland focuses on the campaign for a Scottish Parliament in the second half of the twentieth century. In particular it chronicles the history behind the two devolution referendums of 1979 and 1997 and explores the nature of the Yes and No campaigns for both referendums, their results and the re-establishment of a Scottish Parliament.

The exhibition draws largely on the collections of the Scottish Political Archive (SPA). SPA is based at the University of Stirling and is dedicated to collecting oral and other material relating to the political history of Scotland in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The exhibition features referendum campaign materials including leaflets, pamphlets, posters and badges deriving from all the major political parties and umbrella groups. It also offers visitors the opportunity to hear the voices of politicians and campaigners discussing their experiences of the referendums of ’79 and ‘97, the intervening period and the establishment of a Scottish Parliament.
