¡VAMOS! Mardi Gras 2014
The launch of ¡VAMOS! 2014 with the Mardi Gras!
Launching !VAMOS! Festival the Mardi Gras parade took place along Northumberland Street will troupes of hundreds of orange and white costumed musicians and dancers from the North East and across the UK.
These included samba drummers from Drumdin and Jack Drum Arts, hand made carnival sculptures from iota Little Giants, costumed stiltwalkers from Neighbourhood Watch Stilts International, music from Ferryhill Town Band, and Garner Harris and The Creative Seed and the Mardi Gras Community Dance Troupe.
The artists moved to music commissioned and composed for the Mardi Gras by Hannabiell Sanders (Journal Culture Performing Artist of the year 2012 and Ladies of Midnight Blue), Nik Alevroyiannis (Drumdin) and Paul Ruddick (The Baghdaddies) and performing dance moves especially choreographed by Yuvel Soria.
They were joined by hundreds of young people from eight schools across Newcastle in the Ouseburn Learning Trust, who had been making costumes, learning Samba and practicing dance routines.
The procession culminated in performances on the lawn outside Northern Stage, on the Newcastle University Campus from 12.30pm. An afternoon of free activities between noon and 5pm with a fiesta of live music from authentic Cuban Son band Son Yambu; Hannabiell and Midnight Blue; tango group Duo Norteño plus DJs and finger licking food.
The ¡VAMOS! Pavilion make its first public appearance as part of the afternoon’s activities. Visitors also posed as Latin inspired characters to create their very own #locohero souvenir photographs.
The ¡VAMOS! Pavilion was designed by Brazilian artist and graphic designer Flavio Morais has been especially commissioned for the festival, funded by Arts Council England. The ¡VAMOS! Look out for the Pavillion at key locations during the festival providing a lively hub for ¡VAMOS! Festival activities.
¡VAMOS! Mardi Gras is supported by Arts Council England, Newcastle University and the Ouseburn Learning Trust, with additional support from Dance City
¡VAMOS! Festival runs between Friday 6 and Sunday 22 June 2014, celebrating Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures with events across North East England.

The Central African Government and the Humanitarian Country Team officially launched the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) on 7 January. Requesting US$ 430.7 million, the HRP aims to assist 1.7 million extremely vulnerable Central Africans. The ceremony was launched by the Minister of Humanitarian action and National reconciliation, Ms. Virginie Baikoua, and the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Central African Republic, Ms. Najat Rochdi.

Some of the people gathered to watch the Falcon 9 launch of TurkmenSat 1 on the LC-39 Observation Gantry. Also visible to the right are mobile bleachers setup to provide more places for the crowd to sit. On the stairwell on the halfway platform is a man with the only large Nikon camera and lens setup I saw that day.

Clothing companies sprout up all the time nowadays that it all becomes mundane. Hosting their official launch party at Eighteen Street Lounge, Vintage Futbol set themselves apart from that category; coming out with a bang. Dj Hohme came down from New York City making everyone within earshot move around to his electrifying mashups. This guy rocks an ipad setup with an app he designed to control Serato wirelessly. Vintage Futbol made sure to bring some product out that night and by the second hour, it spread like wildfire. The work speaks for itself and from what you see; a prosperous future is in store for this culture/clothing company. Affiliated with Love Futbol, the guys from VF show us that they’re not just about a good time, but also about giving back. All and all, good times were had with some super friendly people that rubbed off on everyone.

The goal of the courses is to give students the opportunity to design and build complex satellite-like flight vehicles. The high-altitude balloons, which are filled with helium, rise into the stratosphere emulating some key aspects of spaceflight. According to Graduate Student Instructor Gage Bergman, "The stratosphere is an extreme environment, it experiences vast temperature differences, and also requires students to develop robust and reliable systems because once a balloon is released, there is no way to retrieve it - just like actual spaceflight.” Bergman is a masters student in aerospace engineering.
