More than 800 students from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico launched nearly 50 high-powered, amateur rockets April 15, near NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, during the Agency's annual rocket competition.
For the past nine months prior, teams of middle school, high school, college, and university students were tasked to design, build, and launch a rocket and scientific payload to an altitude between 4,000 and 6,000 feet, while making a successful landing and executing a scientific or engineering payload mission.
Student Launch is one of NASA's eight Artemis Student Challenges - a series of activities providing students access to the Artemis program. Through Artemis, NASA will return humans to the Moon for long-term exploration, including landing the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface, missions that will help pave the way for future missions to Mars.

The champagne bottle does not send the ship down the ways. These men take care of that. They cut ropes and knock blocks out of the way. The man in the center is holding an axe to cut the ropes. About the time I took this photo, someone asked me why I was there. My German was far from perfect then, but I knew enough to say, "Ich bin der Sohn der Taufpatin" (I am the sponsor's son). That was good enough.
Members of the Northern Ireland Fire Service take part in a training session on The River Faughan at Drumahoe in Derry/Londonderry - The training, as well as new equipment, will allow firemen, who previously were only able to offer assistance from dry land using lifelines, to enter the water for rescue and assistance operations. The Derry/Londonderry unit, based at Crescent Link Fire Station, goes live at the start of April and will liase with the local Foyle Search and Rescue in operations as well as providing rescue in flood and water rescues across Northern Ireland, A press launch has been scheduled for Ebrington Square and River Foyle on 19th April - Pic James Whorriskey.

The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft lifts off on from Space Launch Complex 41 on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Democracy for Scotland: The Referendum Experience was launched at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum on 27th April, 2012.
The exhibition was formally opened by MSP Linda Fabiani and the launch was attended by many of the interviewees who contributed their recollections of the 1979 and 1997 devolution campaigns to the Devolution Referendums Oral History Collection at the Scottish Political Archive
Democracy for Scotland focuses on the campaign for a Scottish Parliament in the second half of the twentieth century. In particular it chronicles the history behind the two devolution referendums of 1979 and 1997 and explores the nature of the Yes and No campaigns for both referendums, their results and the re-establishment of a Scottish Parliament.
The exhibition draws largely on the collections of the Scottish Political Archive (SPA). SPA is based at the University of Stirling and is dedicated to collecting oral and other material relating to the political history of Scotland in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The exhibition features referendum campaign materials including leaflets, pamphlets, posters and badges deriving from all the major political parties and umbrella groups. It also offers visitors the opportunity to hear the voices of politicians and campaigners discussing their experiences of the referendums of ’79 and ‘97, the intervening period and the establishment of a Scottish Parliament.

Not the first photo someones taken of the jetties at Keswick Launch in the Lake District, and certainly wont be the last, but we happened to be in Keswick around sunset, so seemed rude not to :-)

Here is the platform for the launching ceremony and invited guests. My mother is at front center, with the light green collar. My brother David is just to her left. I cannot see my father in this photo. Ragnar Erickson, my father's father's friend since childhood, is third from left. I was on the platform when the actual launching took place.
The champagne bottle is on the end of the long pole. My mother pulled the rope on one end, and the other end hit the ship. No danger. The Bremer Vulkan shipyard flag is at right, and the Mobil flag (less recognizable) at left.
