LOTHIAN SCHOOL PUPILS ATTEND PREMIERE OF FILM BASED ON POIGNANT EXPERIENCES ON FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLEFIELD TOUR

Ex-Service charity Poppyscotland and Learning and Teaching Scotland today (7 September) held a special screening of a new 20-minute film, which follows the physical and emotional journey of six school pupils during a First World War battlefield tour in Belgium and Northern France.

The six pupils from Dunbar Grammar School were among a group of 30 to attend a special screening of The Journey at the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh. The film was made by Poppyscotland in May 2010 as part of the charity’s education project, Sowing the Poppy seed, which aims to transform the way pupils learn about veterans, remembrance and conflict. A mix of fact and opinion, the film provides a starting point for debate about the First World War and conflict in general.

A DVD will be sent to every school and college in Scotland, featuring The Journey and 32 other films, and includes subtitles in English and Gaelic. The film will also be available online, along with a series of internet-based materials including planning documents, challenges and teachers’ notes. Also, following the success of the charity’s Poppy Poetry competition for schools in 2009, a new competition will be held this year, in conjunction with the Scottish Poetry Library, extended to older children and adults in further and higher education.

Chief Executive Ian McGregor said: “We are very proud of our education project. In order for Poppyscotland to continue its work in the future, it is vital that as they grow up young people have an understanding of the difficult and demanding issues that war and remembrance raise.

“Over the past two years Sowing the Poppy seed has provided both pupils and teachers with a variety of creative and engaging learning opportunities and we are confident that this year’s resources, including the powerful DVD, will be a valued asset to schools and colleges across Scotland.”

Anne Jardine, Director, Learning and Community at Learning and Teaching Scotland, added: “Sowing the Poppy seed is a superb educational resource that aligns with the philosophy of Curriculum for Excellence. It allows teachers and learners to make meaningful connections across the curriculum, using a powerful and emotive subject matter.”

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Pro riders gravitate towards this sleek 24-footer for the accommodating 17-person interior as much as the performance and wakes. There’s a lot to be said for a plush place to recover and professional riders like Amber Wing are on board with Supra’s style of comfort. Amber especially appreciated the comfort and the performance of her Supra this year while she trained for and won Queen of Wake and Best Women’s Rider. The wide seating gives you the ability to kick back and slide into the luxurious interior with full support. Double-up convertible rear-facing seats take the strain out of being a spectator. Of course when it’s “game on,” riders want to be behind the 242 where the Gravity III ballast system swells to an industry-leading 1700 pounds, the SmartPlate refines shape and the wakes Launch. Take the reigns on all of this performance with the VISION dash controlling speed, wake size, wake shape and tailoring those settings for specific riders. The Supra Launch 242 is the ride of your life inside and out.

More than 800 students from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico launched nearly 50 high-powered, amateur rockets April 15, near NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, during the Agency's annual rocket competition.

For the past nine months prior, teams of middle school, high school, college, and university students were tasked to design, build, and launch a rocket and scientific payload to an altitude between 4,000 and 6,000 feet, while making a successful landing and executing a scientific or engineering payload mission.

Student Launch is one of NASA's eight Artemis Student Challenges - a series of activities providing students access to the Artemis program. Through Artemis, NASA will return humans to the Moon for long-term exploration, including landing the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface, missions that will help pave the way for future missions to Mars.

This 22.5-foot wake boat welcomes as many as 13 with versatile seating, comfort and wake sport performance. The Launch 22V interior brings resilient multi-textured Syntec NANO Block vinyls together with the durability of exclusive Gore Tenara thread. Triple density foam construction makes the interior as cushy as it is beautiful. Supra has made the high-traffic path from the lounge to the swim step worry-free with a fiberglass seat step and transom walkacross. The wakes are multi-discipline and pro caliber. Control your curl and your ramps with cockpit switching or a Touch of the VISION. As fun to drive as it is to ride, the 22V slices through rough water with flat precise turns. High and slow speed maneuvers are almost as impressive as you will look pulling them off. Playpen or walk-through bow, the Launch and Sunsport 22V will fit your wake boating lifestyle.

History

HSL 102, the only survivor of the 100 class in the UK, was launched in 1936 and was one of the very first, fast offshore rescue boats in service with the Royal Air Force. She was one of the most technologically advanced production craft of the day, the brainchild of Hubert Scott-Paine. From his powerboat racing days, he developed the concept of fast planing 'hard chine' powerboats. He realised that boats which travelled over the surface of the water could travel more quickly and more efficiently than those which travelled through.

Of mahogany double-diagonal construction, she was powered by three Napier Sea Lion petrol engines. During the Battle of Britain, she was mostly based at Blyth, Northumberland. Her war service also included periods based on the Firth of Forth at Calshot. In two months in 1941, she rescued thirty-eight aircrew from the North Sea, including the crews of two German bombers. As a result, she was inspected by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in July 1941.

When working off Calshot, she was damaged by a Messerschmitt 109 and her radio operator was killed. In 1943, she transferred to the Royal Navy for target towing, and paid off in 1946. She became a houseboat in Mill Creek at Darmouth and was in a sorry state when acquired for restoration. The extensive work needed was carried out by Powerboat Restorations at Fawley between 1993 and 1996. Three six-cylinder 420-bhp Cummins diesels were installed, giving a top speed of about 38knots.

On 5 July 1996, HSL 102 was relaunched at Fawley by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and was subsequently based at Lymington, Hampshire. In late 2009, she moved to Portsmouth following her acquisition by the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, with the help of a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Subsequent Developments

1 May 2012 Vessel was taken in hand at Universal Marina, Sarisbury Green, on River Hamble, in September 2011 for re-engining by Mermaid Marine, of Poole. Three new FPT Iveco (not Fiat as first reported), six-cylinder diesel engines, each developing 400HP, have been fitted and her gearboxes have been overhaulsed. She made 30 knots on sea trials. The work was completed in April 2012 and she has returned to Portsmouth. Source: Paul Brown, May 2012

October 2012 Vessel's been out of the water in the month and had her propellers changed along with some ongoing maintenance. She completed sea trials shortly after completion. Source: Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust (PNBPT) Newsletter, Oct 2012

Softline Pastel - a member of the Softline Group and a local leader in accounting, payroll and business software -- has launched Pastel My Business Online, its first online accounting system, which targets small to medium businesses (SMBs).

“Very often, products become complicated by the sheer volume of features added to it over time," says Softline Pastel managing director Steven Cohen, who explained that by developing Pastel My Business Online from scratch, the company had the opportunity to design the software specifically for business owners who were either starting out with very little bookkeeping knowledge, or who only wanted a basic system.

Launch-Entry Suit

Space Shuttle

The Launch-Entry Suit was a partial-pressure suit worn by Space Shuttle astronauts to protect against loss of cabin pressure during ascent and descent. Introduced after the 1986 Challenger accident, it was used until the late 1990s, when the full pressure Advanced Crew Escape Suit was phased out.

Informally called the "pumpkin suit" for its bright color, it pressurized at 3.2 pounds per square inch, and the inflated internal bladder exerted mechanical pressure on the crewmember's body. The helmet visor and neck dam were pressure seals, but the gloves were not; they connected to the suit by a tube and needle valve. The Launch-Entry Suit included an integrated "g-suit" to prevent blood from pooling in the lower body during reentry. The vest-like harness worn over the suit contained a parachute, breathing air tank, and survival gear for an emergency bail-out.

This suit was never worn in space. The gloves, boots and harness were worn in training or flight. All launch-entry helmets are still in use in NASA's inventory of flight gear.

The Launch 22v is the perfect combination of size, refinement and performance. This 22.5-foot wakeboard boat welcomes a crew of 15 with room for gear and an interior geared toward luxurious accommodation. Completely redesigned for 2012, the 22V interior brings together intricate sections of multi-textured Syntec Nanoblock vinyls with the durability of exclusive Gore Tenara thread. Triple density foam construction makes the Launch interior as comfortable as it is eye-catching. Supra has made the high-traffic path from the lounge to the swim step worry-free with a newly tooled rear seat step and transom walk-over covered in SeaDeck no-slip padding. The wakes are pro caliber and controllable with cockpit switch or the VISION dash, but the 22V is as much about the drive as it is the ride.
