This sort of latch used to be the norm on garden gates everywhere.
I still like that satisfying noise as it shuts.
A bit bird-like, don't you think?
A friend said it reminded them of an evil rooster!

I have always held a great deal of respect and admiration the self sufficiency and initiative inherent in rural folk. That applies to rural people living everywhere; be they farmers, loggers, fishers or anyone who eke a living from the land or sea. Individuals who live in some relative isolation from major commercial areas and can provide us with many lessons on creating something with nothing!
This is a wooden door latch which is commonly found on many twine sheds around the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland. It’s made of wood, has a few spare screws or nails and a piece of rope rigged to provide the shed occupant a means to open the door for egress.

In French, a latch is a "verrou" that rhymes with "filou" (thief). This is the tiniest bear in my (extensive) teddy bear collection. He measures less than 2 inches and he's addicted to candy stashed in the chest with the latch ;-P
Happy Sunday!
PS... It's hit and run these days... family member finally out of hospital, catching up with work and dealing with natural disasters (2 snow storms in one week). Hopefully, things will settle down and I can return to enjoying ODC pictures!
Heather and I spent the first 3 days of our holiday in "Jo's Cabin" out in Blewitt BC (near Nelson). On our last morning at the cabin, the early morning sunlight caught the blanket chest in just the right way.
