Latches used to secure the window shutters when they are open.

This door latch leads to yet another room of the museum.

A latch is a type of mechanical fastener that is used to join two (or more) objects or surfaces together while allowing for the regular or eventual separation of the objects or surfaces.

In French, a latch is a "verrou" that rhymes with "filou" (thief). This is the tiniest bear in my (extensive) teddy bear collection. He measures less than 2 inches and he's addicted to candy stashed in the chest with the latch ;-P

PS... It's hit and run these days... family member finally out of hospital, catching up with work and dealing with natural disasters (2 snow storms in one week). Hopefully, things will settle down and I can return to enjoying ODC pictures!

The latch on my back gate

Heather and I spent the first 3 days of our holiday in "Jo's Cabin" out in Blewitt BC (near Nelson). On our last morning at the cabin, the early morning sunlight caught the blanket chest in just the right way.

A brand new lock on a 300 year old door made a strange combination.

And it works! One of the lids, firmly latched onto a piece of spare tubing. I took the medium strain on the latches (about 50lbs) so that its tight at the surface. At depth, the water pressure will force the lid down a bit, and relieve a bit of the tension.

I bent the latch slightly so that its easier on the plastic and doesn't tense so much.

In the deer park are gates to keep the deer from the new trees. These gates must be kept latched at all times. Each section of the park which the sdeer is not allowed in has these double gates.

Latch for a lift cage of a derelict lift shaft.

This ordinary old latch was on a workbench in an old abandoned garage out in the middle of farm land. There isn't anything special about it, but I loved the way the light from the window was falling on the surface.

There is another latch on the far side, making three. The one in the center left the sides a bit "unsecured". The steel cable is plastic-coated. The cable clamps are stainless with Super Glue in the threads. The cable ends are dipped in silicone sealant.

 

There are cords attached to the latch rivets to keep the lid from falling forward on opening.
