built a controllable laser pointer!

it consits of a 5v laser module and two servo motors hold together by cable straps and is controlled trough a pololu serial 8-bit servo controller by some python code.

the laser module is simply switched trough the serial ports DTR line, that gives pulses as fast as the serial connection speed.

very unstable thing, but good enough to draw some crappy pictures on walls by taking long exposures (check the exif tags)!

its not easy to speed this thing up since you soon come to the point where you have to calculate the timing of your laser pulses with estimated servo speed and momentum. physics, basically, but i ran out of time to develop it really into someting. next try maybe with an arduino and some realtime assembler code..

Josh has discovered the laser pointer. Just the sight of the elusive red light and he goes into full predator frenzy. Chasing it at full speed around the house, the street, the beach, whatever. He will slam into furniture, lick walls, and bite my feet trying to kill it.

It's also dog walking for the lazy. Go to beach. Turn on light. Watch dog run. Turn off light when dog is pooped. Usually after five minutes of dead sprint.

Laser pointer - where have you been all my life??

Exposure:71.5

Aperture:f/18.0

ISO Speed:400

I purchased a 405nm laser diode (Blue/Violet - almost UV) off ebay just recently and needed a case to mount it in. So I have turned this from a length of aluminium tube for the body and two pieces of aluminium bar for the front and back closures. The front closure doubles as a heat-sink. Everything's held together with grub-screws. Runs off two AAA batteries which just fit inside.

I think it looks a bit like a light-sabre!

...and, this is how the projections looks like.

Laser interference

- Light interference pattern created using a green laser pointer and two DVD discs. The laser beam was aimed at a wall, through the centre semi-clear areas of the two discs in different orientations.

- On a side note, I have now gone through a full month of daily uploading at least one photo. Big thanks everybody for following my posts and for all the comments and encouragements. I enjoyed doing this project so far despite the work needed to keep up and will continue doing it for as long as possible.

I must have bumped into the counter? Or maybe auto-focus didn't catch.

One of the last few Kenner Predators released before the "Hive Wars" rebranding, Lasershor is a plasma caster expert - he's even had targeting equipment grafted into his face! His other shoulder cannon is a harpoon launcher, too, so watch out!

Shining a laser pointer in someone's eye is blinding — shining it in a camera lens is awesome.

Zoom of part of the previous image showing red and green dots that I think may be laser pointers. Don't they know that if they blind the space station, it may run into Mars or get stuck in the rings of Saturn!?!?!?!? How dreadful!

Silliness aside, while the location of the space station is well known, getting a later pointer to illuminate in a camera sensor from the ground (to a very fast moving station) seems difficult at best. (Unless the laser pointers were mounting on a tracking device (such as a really fast telescopic mount).

For the HappyShooting assignment "key": This picture is no 56 out of a series of 108 pictures. The only light used is from a laser pointer which was moved over the key during exposure time.

Shaggy loves chasing the mysterious red spot.

So I was crouching down, heavy camera in my right hand (and balanced on my knee) so I could keep wiggling the laser pointer with my left hand ... and I forgot about the flashgun on the camera pointing straight up to bounce light off the ceiling ... ouch ... well I could see again after about 30 seconds ;-)

You can read Shaggy and Bob's deranged dialog about this photo on their blog!

We got a LOT more X10 Lamp Modules!! We've already integrated them all. Now we could use more Appliance Modules. It sounds like an endless cycle, but we actually almost have nothing left to automate.

I cut my hair myself, without washing it or even looking at the back, using the $15 clippers on the left. It came out alright. Maybe a bad patch or two--but the thing's already paid for itself!

We lost the laser pointer. As in, the package made it home, but the pointer never did. Eve's boyfriend Chris Z gave us one that he had! Very nice!!

The USB audio interface on the bottom did not pan out as well as I had hoped. But it was worth a try.

And Carolyn enjoyes her little charging station.

Bencini Koroll 24, with Walmart 35mm film, "drawn on" with a laser pointer before loading. Re-scanned to get the sprockets in and curves pushed to the max in Photoshop.

Each laser pointer cost $1,500. Each mount is $75. I think the Army should shop on eBaY or something. Those batteries are AAA size. We were told not to directly point these into anyone's eyes (except the enemy). They are pretty powerful, but I don't think they are worth that kind of taxpayer's money. Just my .02 Afghani from here in Afghanistan...

Used a strong laserpointer as the main lightsource with some additional lighting. 100% photo.

Video instruction on the safe use of a laser pointer. After the purchase of a high end pointer, I decided it would be a good idea to document the proper, safe use of the popular lights.

Light painting of a crystal decanter with a laser pointer.

This laser pointer was turned from a length of aluminium tube for the body and two lengths of solid rod for the end cap and diode holder at the front. 4 AA batteries, wired to give 3v, powers the green 75mw diode. Everything's held in place with grub screws. This took a couple of evenings work to turn up. Ended up fairly heavy and very solid :)

Valéas received a present from me. It's a laser-pointer! Why? Because he doesn't understand the use of a target-stick which is used to point to the things you want the service dog to pick up. He picks up the stick instead of the thing I'm pointing at. A friend suggested a laser-pointer...

Long exposures with laser pointers. Not *quite* got the hang of it just yet.

Okay braved the cold. It's really cold. Too cold to take long exposures like this. The tripod stuck to my fingers LOL.
