People gaze skywards at the public stargazing session, Milky Way Night, at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory, operated by the University of Galgary. Roland conducts the laser star tour. This was August 30, 2014. Exposure was 13 - 20 seconds at f/3.2 with the 15mm lens and Canon 6D at ISO 4000.
We started Daisy out on the laser pointer. Then the kids found out that our big-ass million-candlepower flashlight makes her go absolutely atomic on the kitchen floor. Then we found that if we shine the light on the kitchen WALL, she will do a faceplant about three feet up from the floor. (And since her face is already concave, it's a scream.)
Most recently I've learned that if I make shadowpuppets on the wall, well...

Yay, my first attempt at light painting! Did something fairly easy since this was my first time trying this technique, and as my high school photography teacher used to say... KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid (although I don't remember exactly what it was he said that about lol). Anyway, my cat Jerry was going nuts while I was doing this because he loves to chase the laser pointer. Poor thing was so confused as to what was going on.
I stood in front of the window on purpose, since this is supposed to be a self portrait. Can you see me?

Finally Rammstein is allowed to complete their set! Thanks for the nation's crappy murder capital for having more free speech than Republican Virginia does. Talk about an awesome show. Whereas Smashing Pumpkins had had the best light show, Rammstein had the best show, period. They were comparable to Gwar in their theatrics. Cybernetic looking laserpointer helmets, fire you could FEEL, flamethrowers manually setting off explosives near the roof, the ejaculating dildo that would not stop, the fire-suit with the singer singing "Rammstein" while on fire. AWESOME show.

Valéas received a present from me. It's a laser-pointer! Why? Because he doesn't understand the use of a target-stick which is used to point to the things you want the service dog to pick up. He picks up the stick instead of the thing I'm pointing at. A friend suggested a laser-pointer...

We have a serious problem with our new house: the front door doesn't close. Not completely, it doesn't latch. We discovered this today when the door blew open. Literally.
No problem, said Jamie and I, we'll just deadbolt it.
Problem is, the kids were unaware of the problem -plus- they didn't know our cats would be in trouble if they got out. They don't know the neighborhood and have barely accepted that this is home.
I took some photos of the cats, and then they left the room. A few minutes later, Jamie called out that the front door was open... did I know where the cats were?
She panicked at my reaction. I sprang up and headed for the door. She ran outside and started calling for Shadow, because Shadow tends to respond.
We were lucky. I had a flashlight and quickly found Casper's eyes in the reflection. When Jamie moved toward him, Shadow materialized and ran inside. Casper sprinted to follow.
Whew!
So then, to add a sense of normalcy, I switched the flashlight over to laser pointer mode and played with Casper. That's when I captured him swatting the light. Silly cat. Lovely cat.
For FGR and Hands, Claws and All Kinds of Paws. I have a hand and a paw in this one. :)
Beavis plays with the laser pointer. He was the cat most inclined to chase something out of all the cats we ever owned. That might have been a factor in his demise, since he ran into the street and got killed by a car -- UNLIKE Samhain, who lived 10 years on busy roads, and never lifted a finger to chase a laser pointer (he figured out they were fake in about 2 seconds and never fell for it again).

Nicole is house sitting somewhere in North Seattle right now, and this is one of their cats. I originally had Nicole point a laser pointer at my forehead to try and make him swat at me, but he was too squirmy and it didn't work... Soo this photo came out instead.
I got another grade back.. Kinda. I mostly just got the results of my consumer behavior final exam back, and I got 26 points above average. Yay! We'll see how that translates to a class GPA. I'm just ready to get all my grades back and move on with my summer vacation!

An idea occurred to me a few months back to try taking a long-exposure shot of someone in mostly darkness while painting them with a laser pointer. I tried it out on my friend Cindy on Day 122 and it worked out quite well.
My original photoshoot plans for this day fell through (rescheduled for next week, though), so I dragged Kate over and blasted her with lasers.

built a controllable laser pointer!
it consits of a 5v laser module and two servo motors hold together by cable straps and is controlled trough a pololu serial 8-bit servo controller by some python code.
the laser module is simply switched trough the serial ports DTR line, that gives pulses as fast as the serial connection speed.
very unstable thing, but good enough to draw some crappy pictures on walls by taking long exposures (check the exif tags)!
its not easy to speed this thing up since you soon come to the point where you have to calculate the timing of your laser pulses with estimated servo speed and momentum. physics, basically, but i ran out of time to develop it really into someting. next try maybe with an arduino and some realtime assembler code..
