The band is placed laparoscopically (or using "keyhole" surgery) around the upper part of the stomach thus dividing the stomach in two parts, this creates a new small stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below the band so the food storage area in the stomach is reduced, and the pouch above the band can hold only a small amount of food

Synopsis
14 years ago BC Decker published the first edition of this superb atlas on surgery of the biliary tract, pancreas and liver. Dr. Cameron had revisited and updated the classic work to include laparoscopic techniques and to demonstrate new procedures and the current status of gastrointestinal surgical procedures. Written for the experienced surgeon, this 2-volume work is beautifully illustrated with anatomical watercolor paintings by co-author Corinne Sandone-that elevate the work to a level not seen in other atlases. Each operative indication and technique is fully illustrated.

Description:This is a beautiful, large format color surgical atlas which will complete any surgeon's library. The first edition was published 14 years ago, and this new edition reflects advances in surgical care, as well as improved illustrations and text.
Purpose:The authors are authoritative leaders in surgery from the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The book describes the operative techniques on the foregut employed at this august institution. Many of the operations described were developed at Johns Hopkins. The atlas vividly depicts in color illustrations and clear language these surgical techniques, bringing them alive for the reader.
Audience:The book is addressed to the young surgical practitioner and senior resident, although it is accessible to the student and resident. Some cases described here are probably performed only at the most sophisticated tertiary referral centers, but it also includes the basic cases such as cholecystectomy. The inclusion of the rare cases adds to the atlas rather than distracting the reader. A colonic interposition for esophageal reconstruction is probably outside the scope of practice for most readers, but there are pearls to learn from reviewing the depiction of the Hopkins way.
Features:Both open and laparoscopic approaches are covered for surgical diseases of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, spleen, liver, pancreas, and biliary tree. The illustrations are vivid and lifelike. The text includes comments about indications, preparation, pitfalls, and technical tips which complement the pictures. The book is fairlylow-tech -- no video or web-linking or interactive technology. Their absence in no way weakens this book. It represents a pinnacle of medical illustration and a text-based surgical atlas.
Assessment:The large format and multiple volumes make this book fairly expensive, and not portable. However, I can think of no other atlas that's as well presented and beautifully packaged. For the reader who owns the first edition, the second edition is well worth purchasing as it covers new technology, and the description is more extensive.
Duodenal Switch Surgery (also known as Bilio-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch or the DS) procedure is a weight loss surgery that alters the gastrointestinal tract with two approaches: a restrictive aspect and a malabsortive aspect.
The malabsorptive portion of the surgery reroutes a lengthy portion of the small intestine, creating two separate pathways and one common pathway. The shorter of the two pathways, the digestive loop, takes food from the stomach to the large intestine. The much longer pathway, the bilio-pancreatic loop, carries bile from the liver to the common path. The common path, or common channel, is a stretch of small intestine usually 75-150 centimeters long in which the contents of the digestive path mix with the bile from the bilio-pancreatic loop before emptying into the large intestine. The objective of this arrangement is to reduce the amount of time the body has to capture calories from food in the small intestine and to selectively limit the absorption of fat.
Is important to let you know, Our Surgeon is the only doing the Duodenal Switch done through Laparoscopic surgery in Mexico.
Elementary students from the Academy of Early Learning visited the Carver College of Medicine to learn about STEM and how it relates to medicine through hands-on activities. These students rotated through three sessions including casting, sun safety and laparoscopic surgery. The students partnered up and practiced casting their fingers, they learned about the harmful effects of the UV rays from the sun while making UV bead bracelets and learning about skin cancer, and they got gowned up for surgery and tried their hands at laparoscopic surgery. The students also had the opportunity to touch real human plasticized specimens including the heart, lungs and brain.

Otto is REALLY good at removing squeakers from toys. If he doesn't do it the moment he gets his little paws on a new one, it will happen. It's just a matter of when.
Last night a friend came by for dinner. As it was raining all day and he'd been stuck indoors with his dog, Jake, he brought Jake along for some R&R with Otto.
After much trading of toys, guarding of bones, and competing for chewies Otto normally ignores, my friend and Jake left. They left behind a small red squeaking ball. Otto of course found it.
This afternoon Otto ran about the house squeaking it constantly. This evening, when I went to throw it for him, the squeaker no longer squeaked. It just rattles around inside the ball, a dead piece of plastic.
Somehow Otto managed to disable the squeaker without the usual shredding and left over body parts. A sort of laparoscopic squeakectomy. I've called him the surgeon before when he's dismembered some stuffed critter; I guess he's upgraded his skills.

Appendicitis | Laparoscopic Appendecectomy
APPENDICITIS is an inflammation of the appendix, a finger-shaped pouch that projects from your colon on the lower right side of your abdomen. The appendix doesn’t seem to have a specific purpose. Appendicitis causes pain in lower right abdomen. However, in most people, pain begins around the navel and then moves. As inflammation worsens, appendicitis pain typically increases and eventually becomes severe. Although anyone can develop appendicitis, most often it occurs in people between the ages of 10 and 30. Standard treatment is surgical removal of the appendix.
Symptoms Signs and symptoms of appendicitis may include:
• Sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower abdomen Sudden pain that begins around your navel and often shifts to your lower right abdomen
• Pain that worsens if you cough, walk or make other jarring movements
• Nausea and vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Low-grade fever that may worsen as the illness progresses
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Abdominal bloating Causes A blockage in the lining of the appendix that results in infection is the likely cause of appendicitis.
The bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the appendix to become inflamed, swollen and filled with pus. If not treated promptly, the appendix can rupture.
Complications:
Appendicitis can cause serious complications, such as:
A ruptured appendix. A rupture spreads infection throughout your abdomen (peritonitis). Possibly life-threatening, this condition requires immediate surgery to remove the appendix and clean your abdominal cavity.
A pocket of pus that forms in the abdomen. If your appendix bursts, you may develop a pocket of infection (abscess). In most cases, a surgeon drains the abscess by placing a tube through your abdominal wall into the abscess. The tube is left in place for two weeks, and you’re given antibiotics to clear the infection. Once the infection is clear, you’ll have surgery to remove the appendix. In some cases, the abscess is drained, and the appendix is removed immediately.
Diagnosis
To help diagnose appendicitis, your doctor will likely take a history of your signs and symptoms and examine your abdomen. Tests and procedures used to diagnose appendicitis include: Physical exam to assess your pain. Your doctor may apply gentle pressure on the painful area. When the pressure is suddenly released, appendicitis pain will often feel worse, signaling that the adjacent peritoneum is inflamed. Your doctor also may look for abdominal rigidity and a tendency for you to stiffen your abdominal muscles in response to pressure over the inflamed appendix (guarding).
Blood test. This allows your doctor to check for a high white blood cell count, which may indicate an infection.
Urine test. Your doctor may want you to have a urinalysis to make sure that a urinary tract infection or a kidney stone isn’t causing your pain.
Imaging tests. Your doctor may also recommend an abdominal X-ray, an abdominal ultrasound or a computerized tomography (CT) scan to help confirm appendicitis or find other causes for your pain.
OT Images Of Surgery By Laparoscopy
Treatment
Appendicitis Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the inflamed appendix. Before surgery you may be given a dose of antibiotics to prevent infection. Surgery to remove the appendix (appendectomy) Appendectomy can be performed as open surgery using one abdominal incision about 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimetres) long (laparotomy).
LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECECTOMY , surgery can be done through a few small abdominal incisions During a laparoscopic appendectomy, the surgeon inserts special surgical tools and a video camera into your abdomen to remove your appendix. In general, laparoscopic surgery allows you to RECOVER FASTER and heal with LESS PAIN and scarring. It may be better for people who are elderly or obese. But laparoscopic surgery isn’t appropriate for everyone. If your appendix has ruptured and infection has spread beyond the appendix or you have an abscess, you may need an open appendectomy, which allows your surgeon to clean the abdominal cavity.

The University of Iowa Health Care STEM Education and two medical students from the Carver College of Medicine attended the Open Minds Open Doors Conference at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. The medical students taught young women what it was like to be a doctor for a day. Different sessions included physical examination skills, laparoscopic surgery, casting/x-rays, and analyzing plastinated specimens. The medical students taught the girls why it is important to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math in order to understand these skills that doctors use every day in their career to take care of others. University of Iowa Health Care is committed partners with formal and informal educators and community organizations across the state to advance STEM literacy to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and build a foundation for children to understanding their own health. In FY2016, more than 22,000 school age children were engaged in hands on learning provided by 300 faculty, staff and students.
