Students from Humboldt High School joined Al Klingelhutz (PhD), Jennifer Steines (MD), Natoshia Askelson (PhD), and current medical students, Jeff Coble and Michael Miller, for a Junior Mini Medical School day in Fort Dodge, Iowa. These students had the opportunity to participate in a birthing simulation, laparoscopic training simulation, visus models, pipetting liquids, and discussion of anatomy and public health issues. This program was a partnership program with Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).
Twelve students from the UI Carver College of Medicine led kids in hands-on, interactive STEM activities at the Iowa Children's Museum on January 30th. Activities and opportunities to kids included trying their hand at performing a minimally invasive surgery on a laparoscopic surgical trainer, making a healthy snack at the nutrition station, making "blood soup" to see what blood is like in the human body, learning about organs in the body by seeing real human plastinated specimens and placing magnetic organs on a body, and finally seeing how casting is done to set bones when they are fractured and looking at x-rays.

The use of 3D-printing in the development of a surgical training model for robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
Generated from a CT scan of a patient who had kidney cancer, this project used image segmentation and 3D-modelling software combined with 3D-printing technology to develop and evaluate an anatomically accurate, low-cost surgical training model of a kidney with a tumour.
There is an increasing incidence of kidney cancer within the UK and where possible surgeons will use a procedure known as a partial nephrectomy to treat it. This procedure removes only the part of the kidney affected by the tumour, which is done to preserve as much post-operative kidney function as possible while still removing the cancer. This procedure is very technically challenging and can only be performed by a few very skilled surgeons. The implications of developing this model are that trainee surgeons could access a low-cost means of learning and continually developing the skills required to perform a robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, which could ultimately generate a bigger pool of capable surgeons and thus widen access to the best available care for patients.
5th and 6th grade students from Hoover Elementary attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for a day to experience hands-on activities with current medical students. The students got the chance to experience doing physical exam skills, make UV bracelets and learn about skin cancer awareness, casting and look at x-rays, check out human plastinated specimens and do some body mapping, as well as experience a "surgical center" and test out their visual-spatial skills on a laparoscopic trainer.
