[caption id="attachment_1390" align="alignleft" width="567" caption="Understanding Hair Dryer Types"] [/caption]

With so many different kinds of hairdryers now available on the market, it is essential for hairdryer users to understand each different type in order to select the one that suits them the best. Due to the advanced technology used in modern hairdryers, the blow dryers of yesterday have become obsolete. The new and improved hairdryers of today use technology that have significantly reduced the overall time it takes to dry hair, after using the hairdryer the hair feels much more soft and smooth.

Here are some of the different types of hair dryers:

1. Traditional hairdryers or blow dryers include the same products which were also in use three generations ago. Although the outlook of the hairdryer now made is different from the traditional blow dryer, the internal parts of the hairdryer are similar to those of the blow dryer.

The parts include a metal coil that produces heat and an electric motor which passes the hot air out of the nozzle of the dryer. But the results of traditional hairdryers were not the best ones; they left hair frizzy and rough because they couldn’t dry hair evenly and thoroughly.

2. Ionic Hairdryers- Use the new technology of negative ions, which lock in the natural moisture of hair. It produces hair that is glossy, healthy and thick. With the use of negative ions, the drying time of the hair is also significantly reduced.

3. Ceramic Hairdryers- have solved the problem of uneven heating, as a ceramic hairdryer evenly and thoroughly dries hair. They also have the smart technology of reducing temperature when it gets too high. In order to achieve this, generally ceramic hairdryers have more than one heat setting. They can cost more, but it’s well worth it to care for hair properly.

4. Tourmaline Hairdryers- are manufactured using tourmaline which is a mineral that gives out a large number of negative ions if warmed, the production of negative ions is far greater than that of a ceramic hairdryer. Tourmaline is used in other types of hairdryers as well, which clearly ranks it as the best one.

Choosing a hairdryer which suits an individual’s hair the most is very vital because not all types of hairdryers suit everyone. When buying a hairdryer, user should always go for quality because a person’s hair is very important and there should be no compromising when it comes to hair.

A cool art project at East Village Community School.

A teacher opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.

Grandpa is a WWII veteran and one of a handful from his group that made it out of the Battle of the Bulge alive. He has worked hard his entire life- as a dairy farmer and a talc miner in northern New York state. He has always faced adversity with an acceptance and matter of factness of which I hope I have inherited a little bit.

Talking to Steve Glischinski, I thought he put it well when he compared the Missabe retirements to what the steam fans must have felt when their choice of locomotives were being retired en masse. Each day you drive past the yard another engine might be on the deadline never to run again. Will there be a new one there tomorrow? Which one is next?

Well here are the 223 and 207 at Viriginia dead and drained. Their horns and straight air equipment have been stripped to help move the ore after they are gone.

I found this scene particularly sad as the 221, 222 and 223 were my favorites to shoot when I moved up north in 2001. These were recent repaints with sharp maroon that carried the U of M lettering. Also, they carried the same numbers of the famed Yellowstones before them which I thought was pretty cool. Sure SD38s are a long ways off, but they were hauling ore cars of the same vintage for the railroad of the same name.

Of course that has all changed. Only the 223 survived into the CN era, although part of the 222 did too. The 222 was retired by the DM&IR in 2003, but it lived on as an organ donor. Its engine went to the 209, which lasted until CN retired it in 2007.

The 223 was retired by CN in January 2008 and will proabably be scrapped just like the Yellowstone 223 before it. Now I know how the steam fans felt.

Knowing full well that the size of this flag would never quite come out in the photo, I found myself helpless to take this shot.

Knowing BRCA Changed My Life

By Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Wasserman Schultz represents Florida’s 23rd District in the U.S. Congress.

We have made major strides in understanding, diagnosing, and treating breast cancer, but we still have so much more to do. We know that breast cancer strikes women from all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities, but we also know that it can be more of a disproportionate threat to some groups, including Ashkenazi Jews like myself. The bottom line is that all women need to know the early warning signs of breast cancer, and be aware of their own personal risk factors. We also must keep improving the tools that will help us identify those risks, such as genetic testing—and ensuring appropriate health care coverage to allow wide access to such tools. Sobering statistics back up this need: one in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. And breast cancer, like any cancer, doesn’t just affect the patient. Cancer in a loved one impacts spouses, parents, extended family and friends—and often most of all, our children. Despite the perception that breast cancer is only something older women need to worry about, young women can and do get breast cancer.

I myself was a young woman at high risk, but didn’t know it. Just months after a clean mammogram, in late 2007, I heard those terrible words, “You have breast cancer.” For as much as I thought I knew as an advocate and legislator in the fight against breast cancer, there was much I didn’t know now that I was a patient. I didn’t know that as an Ashkenazi Jew, I was ten times more likely to have a genetic mutation that drastically increases the likelihood of getting breast or ovarian cancer. I didn’t know that carriers of the BRCA gene have up to an 85 percent lifetime chance of getting breast cancer and up to a 60 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer. After my diagnosis and going through a genetic test, I found out that I do indeed have the BRCA2 mutation. Empowered with this knowledge, I made the life-altering decision to undergo seven surgeries—including a double mastectomy and a prophylactic oophorectomy (to remove my ovaries). I knew it gave me the best chance of being there for my children as they grew up. I was fortunate that I knew enough about my risks and got the help I needed, but I didn’t find my tumor through luck. I found it through knowledge and awareness.

The Last of Us: Remastered

04/23/09: You make me happy; happier than I've ever felt.

"I'm happy knowing you are mine, the grass is greener on the other side."

- NeverShoutNever!

Finding your way includes knowing where you've been. Even while following well-defined trail this can be important for the unplanned circumstance.

Putting tools like map and compass/GPS aside, one simple habit can really help when progress is stalled and one must backtrack: look around you. Yes, it's that simple.

Just look around you. Absorb the features of the land, particularly in the opposite direction. You might be surprised how different everything looks when going the other way; hindsight is 20/20 as we all know! If you regularly look around you'll be setting your own mental breadcrumbs that you can use to find your way back should other methods fail.

Theme inspired by practical technique, as well as the excellent spoof educational program Look Around You.

Knowing this would be my last night in Chiang Mai, I went to the sunday night market. Again, lots of cool art (more artists showed up for this). There was a band playing some really trippy music (with a dijiridou). The food was off the charts! Mango with sticky rice, noodle soup, coconut water, fruit juice, I just kept eating. Then I stopped by the temple which has a really nice massage for 150 baht and it's legit. I got a shoulder and neck massage for the night and that was it.
