Our next stop was the beautiful city of Sighisoara. We arrived here without knowing anything about the city, or having any place to stay. So the first thing that we did was go around and ask cafes, hotels, and hostels if we could give a concert in exchange for either food or a sleeping place. After trying quite a few places and always being denied, we were about to give up when we entered an unlikely chic hotel who gave our offer a second thought. The hotel was Casa Wagner, and it just so happened to be the owner’s wife’s birthday, so they decided to hire us as a surprise act for her party in exchange for both food and a place to sleep. One night turned into one week once we became friends with the owner. He also introduced us to a really great gypsy band in town, Profisonor, and gave us the connections to visit another gypsy village nearby.
Knowing BRCA Changed My Life
By Debbie Wasserman Schultz

We have made major strides in understanding, diagnosing, and treating breast cancer, but we still have so much more to do. We know that breast cancer strikes women from all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities, but we also know that it can be more of a disproportionate threat to some groups, including Ashkenazi Jews like myself. The bottom line is that all women need to know the early warning signs of breast cancer, and be aware of their own personal risk factors. We also must keep improving the tools that will help us identify those risks, such as genetic testing—and ensuring appropriate health care coverage to allow wide access to such tools. Sobering statistics back up this need: one in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. And breast cancer, like any cancer, doesn’t just affect the patient. Cancer in a loved one impacts spouses, parents, extended family and friends—and often most of all, our children. Despite the perception that breast cancer is only something older women need to worry about, young women can and do get breast cancer.
I myself was a young woman at high risk, but didn’t know it. Just months after a clean mammogram, in late 2007, I heard those terrible words, “You have breast cancer.” For as much as I thought I knew as an advocate and legislator in the fight against breast cancer, there was much I didn’t know now that I was a patient. I didn’t know that as an Ashkenazi Jew, I was ten times more likely to have a genetic mutation that drastically increases the likelihood of getting breast or ovarian cancer. I didn’t know that carriers of the BRCA gene have up to an 85 percent lifetime chance of getting breast cancer and up to a 60 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer. After my diagnosis and going through a genetic test, I found out that I do indeed have the BRCA2 mutation. Empowered with this knowledge, I made the life-altering decision to undergo seven surgeries—including a double mastectomy and a prophylactic oophorectomy (to remove my ovaries). I knew it gave me the best chance of being there for my children as they grew up. I was fortunate that I knew enough about my risks and got the help I needed, but I didn’t find my tumor through luck. I found it through knowledge and awareness.

One of the largest cattle markets in Mali occurs every Saturday at a market about one hour away from Bamako.
Knowing how regular markets that sell food and wares can be a little chaotic and congested, I was expecting a cattle market to be even more so.
Instead I was surprised at how low key the sellers were. There were no shouts to advertise their stock and the only frenzied part of the market is when the occasional errant cow wandered off from its handler.
While walking around the grounds, I had to be constantly aware of the cattle around me and had to be ready to jump out of the way in case I heard hoofs clambering.
There were no women buying or selling cattle and nearly all the men were dressed in traditional clothing.
In case you were wondering, a young cow, around 3 years old, had an initial asking price of around 150 USD.
An older cow that had horns around 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) cost about twice.
Since I know nothing about cows, I have no idea what horn size says other than a cow could be older than another one without horns.

04/23/09: You make me happy; happier than I've ever felt.
"I'm happy knowing you are mine, the grass is greener on the other side."
- NeverShoutNever!
Finding your way includes knowing where you've been. Even while following well-defined trail this can be important for the unplanned circumstance.
Putting tools like map and compass/GPS aside, one simple habit can really help when progress is stalled and one must backtrack: look around you. Yes, it's that simple.
Just look around you. Absorb the features of the land, particularly in the opposite direction. You might be surprised how different everything looks when going the other way; hindsight is 20/20 as we all know! If you regularly look around you'll be setting your own mental breadcrumbs that you can use to find your way back should other methods fail.

Knowing how to really cook is a skill that will serve you well. You can save cash with tasty and healthy food you make right in your kitchen.
Prepare to cook before you actually start cooking. Having your preparation done ahead of time is very important. When you have a schedule as to how long you plan to be cooking, things can get a little stressful in the kitchen. You can save yourself a lot of stress by doing as much preparation ahead of time as you can.
In order to get the most from your selection of spices, you should store them out of the light as well as heat. Storing them out exposes them to light, excessive heat and humidity, which can reduce their shelf-life. If you store your spices in dark place with relatively low temperatures like a pantry, the spices will retain their taste and take more time to spoil. Fresh spices offer better taste profiles than stale ones.
Do this quick and handy trick to salvage your efforts. In a mid-sized bowl, mix together 1 tblsp water and 2 tblsp corn starch. You can then add the solution to the sauce and it will become thicker. Add the starch slowly and stir the sauce constantly to avoid making it too thick.
Several times your burgers will keep to the grill, and it is hard or impossible to remove them without destroying their shape. Brush the grill with oil so that food does not stick to it. Vegetable oil works great and will not make your grill greasy.
Boiling and other lengthy cooking processes remove some of the vital nutrients contained in vegetables. Use quick cooking methods instead to maintain their healthy quality. Examples of these methods are steaming, sauteing, or the best one would be to eat them raw.
You can make healthier mashed potatoes with the same taste and texture you love by substituting cauliflower for potatoes in equal proportions. Because cauliflower has a pretty bland taste, it blends well with the potatoes and improves the flavors of the other ingredients. Additionally, mashed cauliflower has the same texture and color as mashed potatoes, so no one will know that you've boosted the veggie content of the dish while removing calories.
Following these suggestions can help you develop great, simple recipes! You will become a better cook the more you practice. In addition, the entire family can benefit from the healthier lifestyle that home cooking inspires. Try these tips and start creating delicious meals at home. www.chefjuanbernardini.com/tag/viandas-de-lujo/
I like being able to see.
Five years ago, I started seeing flashes of light at the periphery of my left eye. Knowing that is a warning sign of retinal problems, I got into an eye specialist right away. I had a torn retina, repaired in a jiffy in the doc's office, him using a cryogenic probe to "tack" down the retina. Every year I go for an eye checkup. Today was my day to get my eyeballs examined.
The doc and I had a good time talking about weight loss and exercise. We both have lost weight and keep it off by making lifestyle changes. But I digress. Since I have good control over my diabetes (I've had normal blood sugar readings for almost a decade), and have not had any recurrence of retinal problems, the doc was considering releasing me from an annual checkup, just having my regular eye doc keep watch over my eye health. I mentioned my peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet (a side effect from diabetes that some have), he quickly said that was an indication to keep doing the special annual checkup. Then he proceeded to check me out thoroughly.
"When did you have laser repair on your right retina?" asked the doc. "Never" said I with puzzlement in my voice. "You have a tear in your right retina and it looks like it's been partially repaired by a laser." said the doc. "Let me look more closely" said he as he took a higher magnification lens and had me carefully move my eye around. It tuned out that I had a bigger tear than I had in the left eye, and my body was using pigment to try to repair it, giving it a similar look, upon first glance, to a laser repair.
I had a choice. Let my body keep trying to repair it and have a 50% chance at it failing, possibly with catastrophic effects to my vision, or have the repair done as with the left, using a cryogenic probe to "tack" down the tear and getting a 90% chance of success. I took the better odds and prepared to get a big brain freeze.
I was prepared for the fix this time, having gone through it once before. It's a bit frightening to think about someone, a very well-trained someone, sticking a needle-like probe in your eye. I was all numbed up and fully dilated when the doc quickly inserted the probe in the white part of my eye. With three quick taps of the freezing probe, the repair was done. I did have a huge brain freeze like you get when you eat ice cream too fast. A small price to pay for eyesight. My eye was sore for much of the day, and I have drops to help with the pain. I'll go back in a month for a checkup. I'm hoping that, like with the left eye 5 years ago, all will be normal.
Once a year I take a picture after seeing the eye specialist and do my public service bit to encourage awareness of the signs and symptoms of a retinal tear or detachment. This year I had no signs or symptoms, but I did have my annual eye checkup which did uncover a silent tear that could have led to a detachment and possible permanent loss of vision. I was fortunate. I hope you are as well.
Here are signs and symptoms of a retinal tear or detachment. If you have any of these, get to an eye doctor quickly.
flashing lights
sudden onset of new floaters
gradual shading of vision from one side (like a curtain being drawn)
rapid decline in sharp, central vision. This occurs when the macula — the area of the retina responsible for central vision — detaches.
Sign Drop is the most dramatic time in a Rangerettes life. There is great loss because many girls won't make it. There is pure elation because nearly 30 girls out of 200 will make it.
I'm teaching poetry at the moment. My class has noticed that all the poems we're studying are depressing. I was hoping that they wouldn't notice. Amidst all the misery, images of the sun are often wheeled out. You can see the sun above me. I decided to give it an All-Knowing Eye.
There is a distinct golden quality to my again totally thrifted & mainly remixed outfit. Oh, I just realised that the necklaces were bought new at 'Diva', so I can't send this to the 100% Thrifted Pool. Drats!
I now have three different tops like this, but this is my favourite so far. Bangles were a gift from a Student Teacher. She gave me about twenty.
Anna May Wong-1938
FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN STAR!
Written by PHILIP LEIBFRIED
Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!
Excerpt from : That Old Feeling: Anna May Wong
Part II of Richard Corliss' tribute to the pioneer Chinese-American star.
Daughter of the Dragon. Paramount 1931.
Based on a Fu Manchu novel by Sax Rohmer.
Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."
The Personal Anna May Wong
This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."
The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she
had been Anna May White?
Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.
