Know Thyself original photo

You know how we hustle for the RFC. I'm holding a ridiculous amount of 20 dollar bills I collected at the gala by showing off my cleavage and convincing people they really needed a new ring.

He knows all that is in the land and in the sea; there is not a leaf that falls from a tree but He knows about it; there is not a grain in the darkest bowels of the earth of which He is not aware; everything fresh and dry has been recorded in an open Book. It is He Who recalls your souls at night and knows what you do during the day; then next day He returns you to your usual work to complete the fixed term of your life.

And do you notice when you're sad?

Okay, so you know that recent Michigan trip I keep mentioning? It was a different sort of trip than usual, and I'm going to present it in an unusual way. We took the trip as part of a genealogical exploration of one of my ancestral lines, so for the next couple of weeks, I'll be talking a lot about where I originate and some of the people who produced me. But I'll start with a 30-plus-year-old picture of a batch of people who have little to do with Michigan.

These are the folks who actually raised me. I don't like using my real identity on the internet, so I won't tell you their full names. My little play on the name of a movie star gunslinger has worked well enough as a fake flickr surname, though, so that's what I'll call these people. This is a photo of the Midwestwood family, taken in 1983 or '84 for a church directory, I think. The parents, Becky and Milton, sit in the middle with the baby on their lap. The middle kid stands over on the left, looking a little creepy. And the big-haired blond kid standing off to the right with an expression stuck somewhere between confusion and annoyance is the ten-year-old version of me, Clint Midwestwood, oldest of the Midwestwood children.

There's a fun fact about that family I've alluded to several times in the past: only three of the five people in this image are related by birth. That dark haired kid on the left is the only child born to Milton and Becky to make it out of the hospital. (There were three other babies who didn't live longer than a day.) The other two kids, me and the little guy, were both adopted as infants. And it only gets more complicated from there, as that baby and I are genetically related, too. Biologically, the kid is the child of one of my biological sisters, who gave birth to him when she was 16. She figured since my parents already had one her brothers, they might as well have her son, too. I used to have a lot of fun with family pictures by pointing out that the only person I actually share any genes with here is the black kid.

But there's a down side to all this for somebody who likes to compartmentalize things the way I do. Thanks to my wife, who is really good at researching things, I've developed an interest in genealogy. But this leads directly into the question of which genealogical line I follow. I've got two options giving me twice as many ancestors as everybody else. I can follow the line of the Midwestwoods, the people who raised me and from whom the law says I originate. Or I can follow the genetic line that leads to a bunch of people with names like Prout or Frazier or Goudreau or, if you can believe it, Waubojeeg.

At one point in the recent Michigan trip, Robin asked me which line I felt the greater connection to. That's sort of a difficult question to answer, as it hints at a lot of nurture-nature fights. My personal experience tells me those fights mostly wind up a draw, and neither really dominates. I consider both lines "real." They're just real in different ways. Though I'm not genetically related to the people in this photo, Milton and Becky are my real and true parents, and I've never been tempted to think otherwise. And since my parents' ancestral lines made them who they are and my parents made me who I am, I am as much a product of their lines as they are. But the physical stuff that embodies me, the blood and bones and tendency for cancer and bouts of depression and fuzzy hair, that comes from a mix of Michiganders and Mississippians. My love of writing and photography and my urge to over-analyze things probably comes from there, too. So that line's as real as the other.

The genetic line is the one I'll explore in this set, focusing on the lineage of my biological mother. She came from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as did practically every one of my forebears in that line going back at least 300 years. Here's a few of their stories.

I'm gonna live today like its my last day.

I keep telling myself this whenever I'm down.

You have no idea how many times Avril Lavigne's songs saved my life. haha

We never know the worth of water till the well is dry

You will know why I decided to never eat pork anymore.

This little suckling pig one day fell from a truck full of little pigs intended to be eaten in restaurants. Behind the truck, there was a car. The driver of the car saw the little pig fall in the grass.

She picked it up and carried it to the Refuge at Hof Butenland.

The little pig had a few superficial wounds. Like all the animals in the shelter, he was taken to the vet and then returned to live in the shelter.

As you can see in these photos (screenshots taken from Facebook), the little pig was named Frederik and lived for some time as a little baby with the little dogs and cats before meeting the big animals.

Today, he is 4 years old and since he is an adult, he has become the official fiancé of the Diva Rosa Mariechen, who also has a story.

Rosa and Frederik are inseparable and it's nice to see them together. Already, before seeing Rosa, I had decided never to eat pork again. The only meat I can eat once in a while is turkey.

You can follow the adventures of all these wonderful farm animals by typing "Hof Butenland", animals shelter.

I follow them every day. Their story is told in German and translated into English and French.

A couple that I got to know for a couple of months, we became friends over these months.

The pretty bride has known a lot of photographer in Singapore, it’s my truly my pleasure to be chosen as a photographer for the biggest day of her life.

They were charming, loving and pretty all day long, I had never been tired taking photos of them,

and they even had prepared meals for us who making this day happens.

As a wedding photographer, I always want to get closer to the couple before the actual event comes, get to know their needs, their likes, and always try to create the chemistry with the couple and the beloved friends around them. I want them to feel comfortable on the wedding day, during the photo sessions especially. For that, I always go for extra miles beyond I had promised on the paper.

I always work on my assignment with all my heart, I never treat it just to complete my job.

Apart from God’s grace and blessing, I believe this is why I am able to be where I am.

It was really a great day to witness their moments.

A big congratulations to Thaw Zin & Win Lei,

and wish you all have a lovely family and a happy life together.

Did You Know?

Males sing complex songs on wintering grounds in Hawaii, that can last up to 20 minutes and be heard 20 miles (30 km) away!

In the Pacific, humpbacks migrate seasonally from Alaska to Hawaii--they can complete the 3,000-mile (4,830 km) trip in as few as 36 days!

Species Description:

Weight:25-40 tons (50,000-80,000 pounds; 22,000-36,000 kg);

newborns weigh about 1 ton (2,000 pounds; 900 kg)

Length:Up to 60 feet (18 m), with females larger than males;

newborns are about 15 feet (4.5 m) long

Appearance: Primarily dark grey, with some areas of white

Lifespan:About 50 years

Diet:Tiny crustaceans (mostly krill), plankton, and small fish; they can consume up to 3,000 pounds (1360 kg) of food per day

Behavior:Breaching (jumping out of the water), or slapping the surface

Humpback whales are well known for their long pectoral fins, which can be up to 15 feet (4.6 m) in length. Their scientific name, Megaptera novaeangliae, means "big-winged New Englander" as the New England population was the one best known to Europeans. These long fins give them increased maneuverability; they can be used to slow down or even go backwards.

Similar to all baleen whales, adult females are larger than adult males, reaching lengths of up to 60 feet (18 m). Their body coloration is primarily dark grey, but individuals have a variable amount of white on their pectoral fins and belly. This variation is so distinctive that the pigmentation pattern on the undersides of their "flukes" is used to identify individual whales, similar to a human fingerprint.

Humpback whales are the favorite of whale watchers, as they frequently perform aerial displays, such as breaching (jumping out of the water), or slapping the surface with their pectoral fins, tails, or heads.

In the summer, humpbacks are found in high latitude feeding grounds, such as the Gulf of Maine in the Atlantic and Gulf of Alaska in the Pacific. In the winter, they migrate to calving grounds in subtropical or tropical waters, such as the Dominican Republic in the Atlantic and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific. The Arabian Sea humpback does not migrate, remaining in tropical waters all year.

Humpback whales travel great distances during their seasonal migration, the farthest migration of any mammal. The longest recorded migration was 5,160 miles (8,300 km); seven animals, including a calf, completed this trek from Costa Rica to Antarctica. One of the more closely studied routes is between Alaska and Hawaii, where humpbacks have been observed making the 3,000-mile (4,830 km) trip in as few as 36 days.

During the summer months, humpbacks spend the majority of their time feeding and building up fat stores (blubber) that they will live off of during the winter. Humpbacks filter feed on tiny crustaceans (mostly krill), plankton, and small fish and can consume up to 3,000 pounds (1,360 kg) of food per day. Several hunting methods involve using air bubbles to herd, corral, or disorient fish. One highly complex variant, called "bubble netting" is unique to humpbacks. This technique is often performed in groups with defined roles for distracting, scaring, and herding before whales lunge at prey corralled near the surface.

In their wintering grounds, humpback whales congregate and engage in mating activities. Humpbacks are generally polygynous "having multiple female mates" with males exhibiting competitive behavior on wintering grounds. Aggressive and antagonistic behaviors include chasing, vocal and bubble displays, horizontal tail thrashing, and rear body thrashing. Males within these groups also make physical contact, striking or surfacing on top of one another. These bouts can cause injuries ranging from bloody scrapes to, in one recorded instance, death. Also on wintering grounds, males sing complex songs that can last up to 20 minutes and be heard 20 miles (30 km) away. A male may sing for hours, repeating the song several times. All males in a population sing the same song, but that song continually evolves over time. Humpback whale singing has been studied for decades, but scientists still understand very little about its function.

Gestation lasts for about 11 months. Newborns are 13-16 feet (4-5 m) long and grow quickly from the highly nutritious milk of their mothers. Weaning occurs between 6-10 months after birth. Mothers are protective and affectionate towards their calves, swimming close and frequently touching them with their flippers. Males do not provide parental support for calves. Breeding usually occurs once every two years, but sometimes occurs twice in a three-year span.

Habitat

During migration, humpbacks stay near the surface of the ocean.

While feeding and calving, humpbacks prefer shallow waters. During calving, humpbacks are usually found in the warmest waters available at that latitude. Calving grounds are commonly near offshore reef systems, islands, or continental shores.

Humpback feeding grounds are in cold, productive coastal waters.

Distribution

Humpback whales live in all major oceans from the equator to sub-polar latitudes.

In the North Pacific, there are at least three separate populations:

California/Oregon/Washington stock that winters in coastal Central America and Mexico and migrates to areas ranging from the coast of California to southern British Columbia in summer/fall;

Central North Pacific stock that winters in the Hawaiian Islands and migrates to northern British Columbia/ Southeast Alaska and Prince William Sound west to Kodiak; and Western North Pacific stock that winters near Japan and probably migrates to waters west of the Kodiak Archipelago (the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands) in summer/fall. There is some mixing between these populations, though they are still considered distinct stocks.

Threats

Humpback whales face a series of threats including:

entanglement in fishing gear

Whale watch harassment

Habitat impacts

Harvest

Humpbacks can become entangled in fishing gear, either swimming off with the gear or becoming anchored. We have observed incidental "take" of humpback whales in the California/ Oregon swordfish and thresher shark drift gillnet fishery. Potential entanglement from gear from several fisheries can occur on their long migration from Hawaii to Alaska. Humpbacks in Hawaii have been observed entangled in long line gear, crab pots, and other non-fishery-related lines.

Inadvertent ship strikes can injure or kill humpbacks. Whale watching vessels may stress or even strike whales. The central North Pacific stock is the focus of a whale-watching industry on their wintering grounds in the Hawaiian Islands. The feeding aggregation in southeast Alaska is also the focus of a developing whale-watching industry that may impact whales in localized areas.

Shipping channels, fisheries, and aquaculture may occupy or destroy humpback whale aggregation areas. Recreational use of marine areas, including resort development and increased boat traffic, may displace whales that would normally use that area. In Hawaii, acoustic impacts from vessel operation, oceanographic research using active sonar, and military operations are also of increasing concern.

I know, eye pictures are so cliche. Blah, blah, blah. But, I love this picture anyways regardless of how many times it has been done.

Please leave notes! :D

This is my friend, Sarah Rose. She is one of the most beautiful, yet one of the most insecure/unconfident girls I know.

I know that @elizabethplaid is trading me a Generation Girl Mari but I’ve been keeping an eye out for her fanny pack on ebay cuz it’s a doll sized fanny pack with an anime robot keychain.

Eventually I found a full dressed doll from Ukraine who was selling her for a lot cheaper than any American seller selling a nude doll of her so I ended up buying her.

I’m so glad I got a Mari to mess around and restyle to join my other GG dolls with restyled and rebodied looks. But I’m mostly glad I got her fanny pack…

Yeah, I know, this is crazy!

But I needed to do it. To experience it once in my life.

You'll discover here below the entire process. We really had fun shaving my head. I hope Maïa will forgive me ;)

It was a collective venture and we had a wonderful last night all together :).

So this is part of the new start. Not that I'll keep my head shaved but just doing crazy/different things, to experience new feelings, to embrace change ;)

Farewell everybody, I'll be posting new and old photos very soon.

With Love.

Self portrait. Canada, Montreal 2006.

Inspired by the classic song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and performed by Dionne Warwick, this small series helps answer the question.... "Do you know the way to San Jose?"

"Do you know the way to San Jose?

I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way.

Do you know the way to San Jose?

I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose."

It's a classic, and frequently enters my head as I see these signs on my way to or from work.

I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more.... and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :)

Okay, I realize this is going to diminish my street cred...but I'm toadly a girly girl. I know, I know! You are thinking, but she likes to swear and drink beer. It doesn't fit.

One of the main reasons I don't photograph animals, bugs, critters, and the like is I'm afraid. This toad has lived in my garage for months. I caught him outside the other day and figured I'd spend my lunch hour chasing him around with a camera. However, I was the one that ended up getting chased. I'd lean in to get a close picture. He would jump. I would squeal and pull back. Repeat. I'm slightly ashamed to admit it, but there you go.

I noticed he was apparently injured on his side. I have no idea what happened. Apparently my garage is a dangerous place???

I don't know if anyone ever reads my descriptions, but I write them anyway, so there!!

Was out today (August 20th 2021) on a forced vacation day, from 9:30AM til' almost 4PM. 80F today but it felt like 100F. This is a very active line and I probably flicked 20 freights today. 750+ flicks. By the time I get rid of a few duplicates, and bad ones, I'm guessing it'll be about 700 +/-. 700 to straighten, fix any color issues, upload, and also ID the writers. It's lots of time and as you can imagine, it's a lot of work, but so far it's been fun. I'm trying to not rush myself to post before I'm ready. I already have the flicks, and they're timeless. So getting them posted ASAP!!!!!! is not really my concern. Duh..

Had an interesting interaction with a guy while out there. Guy with backpack had walked back and forth across the tracks a few times. The lat time I saw him he was on the other side of a set, about 100 yards away. Next thing you know he's coming closer..... Closer..... And I'm like WTF? I'm way out here minding my own business. He walks within' like 10 ft. of me and I say "How ya' doin'?" he says something, and then says "Trains?" and I say "Yep." and he says "Oh.." and walks away. I think he was feelin' me out, as there's a small population of people who's homes are shall I say, mobile. I've talked to a few of them, and have never had a bad interaction, I just don't like people walkin' up on me when I'm trying to get away from the rest of the world out by the tracks. I go out there to get away from people, not to interact.

======================

I follow some other amazing photographers on flickr, but for this I will talk about the ones who flick the freights. There are a few that I really love. Some it's because of the great locations they shoot at, and others it's the amazing little details they manage to capture. For me (right now) I don't have the luxury of walking the lines and seeing pieces static. 99.999% of my flicks the freight is rolling by at 10-50 mph and sometimes I don't really even know what I have until I get home, dump the memory cards and go through the photos. Because of this, most of my flicks are just straight on shots and documenting what I saw and where. I saw this freight here, on this date, here's what was on it, and i captured it. Buffed or scraped next week, well I have it on "film" for future generations (sounds corny, I know). There are times when a freight will stop in-front of me, and I'll walk up and get some shots of monikers, but it's rare.

Obviously in any area there are sidings where freights park for extended periods, I know a few spots, but as I get older, and older, do I really want to leave my car parked on the side of the road and walk 2 miles to capture some little details I might normally miss? I'd love to, but it's just not practical for me at this time, any many other people do it better than I could. Retirement is getting closer every day, maybe then, when my weekdays are free. :-)

======================

During the Covid lockdown, I was working from home, and I was getting out benching like 2 & 3 times a month. Back at work, I'm lucky to have the energy to get out once a month. Every time I do manage to get out, I come home and my batteries feel re-charged. It's been so f-ing hot here in SoCal though, I can't wait for cooler weather and some clouds in the sky.

As always, thanks to the writers!

It's not one I'd have picked out myself, it's too large and heavy, the screen isn't very good, the battery doesn't last long enough, and it has an odd power cable. But that's not why I'm shunning it.

It's associated with work. My other computer is its own thing, it stands on its own. Sure, it hosts my web site and sets up remote access to the home network, but it stands alone. When I'm using it, I'm doing my own thing. The laptop is my portal to work.

I work and I sleep. And sometimes I don't sleep. Long hours, short deadlines, large workloads, short staffs, short fuses. That laptop is the thing in the house that most reminds me of work. So it's the object of my frustrations at home.

I didn't know what they were looking at when I took this picture, but these are actually the parents of our precious celebrity Sandhill youngster. He is hidden behind the bush and did not come out. Finally, dad went around the bush to approach him. I thought there was a snake or something dangerous that dad was investigating because he periodically suddenly flew up a few feet as if to avoid being bitten by something. At last, with dad's persistent nosing around, the youngster showed himself briefly with a lot of wing flapping and making noises I've never heard before and wing-flapped his way some yards away and disappeared in a thicket. The parents kept looking in his direction but then moved on. At this point, I was getting very concerned that he might be injured somehow. I could see part of him through the bushes and stayed a long time to try to see if he was alright - but I never could tell because he just stayed hidden underneath a big bush. Nothing seemed wrong with his wings as he had been flapping vigorously, so I'm worried if maybe he has some leg problem? Or is it time for the parents to "kick him out of the house" so to speak?

I know many people who ask me why do I like hiking and climbing mounains even when it is so cold.

Well, actually I don't know why, but I know why I can't suffer being here in my office and wasting my time reading and writing reports. Yes, I said "wasting time", because I really think that life is too short to use my time to earn so little money that is just enough to survive and have so little time to live, I mean real "living".

In the picture you can see my freind Linus walking up the Veliki Snežnik in the Dinaric Alps (Slovenija).
