Took this a few weeks ago but never posted it. It's a HDR but I never got the image quite how I wanted it. Let me know what you think. Looking West towards sunset over the hills.
Ya know, there are times in which you get so down and so housebound that you just have to get out or lose your sanity. Yesterday was one of those days, so I made a decision last night that today I would get up and out by dawn and go shooting. I packed the van last night and was up and out the door by 6:30am today. It was too late to get to the mountains or the ocean for sunrise shots, so I decided that perhaps the best place was the Manassas Natl Battlefield...I was not disappointed. Here is Stonewall in the glory of a a glorious sunrise.
HDR 5exp Photomatix tweaked with Topaz Adjust 5. I finished my shooting at 4:00 this afternoon and must have covered 150 miles in the van...I know, it sucks when it comes to gas mileage, but what the hey. I had a great time by myself, and be forewarned...lots of images coming!
Now I feel much better!
MJ: We were sittin here in the shade after playin and we heard a noise..
FInch: And we couldn believe our eyes
MJ: Yeah, look what was standin right there - it was Bambi and his Mama.
Finch: Don't tell anybudy but Maddison and Zoe were scared cuz they thought they might come get us. We told them they wouldn't hurt a fly.
I know I already plugged this book, but Ghoulia insisted on being Karou for Halloween. And I ADORE this book and couldn’t wait to revisit the world that Laini Taylor created.
Karou is described as 5’6” with blue hair and multiple tattoos. The tattoos that are visible include the indigo hamsas on her palms, “true” and “story” around her wrists like bracelets, and a serpent around her ankle. She has “dark, silent movie star eyes” and wears a necklace of African trade beads in every color. She also has three bullet scars on her abdomen (which I just couldn’t seem to paint well. Too tricky for me).
A lot of the story takes place in Prague and that is a picture of a doorway in Prague. In the book, black handprints are appearing on doorways around the world.
Karou is an artist and always carries a sketchbook. The sketchbook images are from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone facebook, and I don’t know the original artist. The larger sketch on the far left is of Akiva. The ones in the smaller sketchbook are of Brimstone and Issa. All of them are wonderful characters in the book!

Okay, so you know that recent Michigan trip I keep mentioning? It was a different sort of trip than usual, and I'm going to present it in an unusual way. We took the trip as part of a genealogical exploration of one of my ancestral lines, so for the next couple of weeks, I'll be talking a lot about where I originate and some of the people who produced me. But I'll start with a 30-plus-year-old picture of a batch of people who have little to do with Michigan.
These are the folks who actually raised me. I don't like using my real identity on the internet, so I won't tell you their full names. My little play on the name of a movie star gunslinger has worked well enough as a fake flickr surname, though, so that's what I'll call these people. This is a photo of the Midwestwood family, taken in 1983 or '84 for a church directory, I think. The parents, Becky and Milton, sit in the middle with the baby on their lap. The middle kid stands over on the left, looking a little creepy. And the big-haired blond kid standing off to the right with an expression stuck somewhere between confusion and annoyance is the ten-year-old version of me, Clint Midwestwood, oldest of the Midwestwood children.
There's a fun fact about that family I've alluded to several times in the past: only three of the five people in this image are related by birth. That dark haired kid on the left is the only child born to Milton and Becky to make it out of the hospital. (There were three other babies who didn't live longer than a day.) The other two kids, me and the little guy, were both adopted as infants. And it only gets more complicated from there, as that baby and I are genetically related, too. Biologically, the kid is the child of one of my biological sisters, who gave birth to him when she was 16. She figured since my parents already had one her brothers, they might as well have her son, too. I used to have a lot of fun with family pictures by pointing out that the only person I actually share any genes with here is the black kid.
But there's a down side to all this for somebody who likes to compartmentalize things the way I do. Thanks to my wife, who is really good at researching things, I've developed an interest in genealogy. But this leads directly into the question of which genealogical line I follow. I've got two options giving me twice as many ancestors as everybody else. I can follow the line of the Midwestwoods, the people who raised me and from whom the law says I originate. Or I can follow the genetic line that leads to a bunch of people with names like Prout or Frazier or Goudreau or, if you can believe it, Waubojeeg.
At one point in the recent Michigan trip, Robin asked me which line I felt the greater connection to. That's sort of a difficult question to answer, as it hints at a lot of nurture-nature fights. My personal experience tells me those fights mostly wind up a draw, and neither really dominates. I consider both lines "real." They're just real in different ways. Though I'm not genetically related to the people in this photo, Milton and Becky are my real and true parents, and I've never been tempted to think otherwise. And since my parents' ancestral lines made them who they are and my parents made me who I am, I am as much a product of their lines as they are. But the physical stuff that embodies me, the blood and bones and tendency for cancer and bouts of depression and fuzzy hair, that comes from a mix of Michiganders and Mississippians. My love of writing and photography and my urge to over-analyze things probably comes from there, too. So that line's as real as the other.
The genetic line is the one I'll explore in this set, focusing on the lineage of my biological mother. She came from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as did practically every one of my forebears in that line going back at least 300 years. Here's a few of their stories.
Snuck out last night for a couple of hours while Steph watched Keston and shot a rehersal for a local play.
Do you know where war children are? [I believe] A little runny, but perhaps more effective that way.

I don't know how I manage not to notice that it was seriously leaning in the previous version. Probably because I kept focused on the plant, not the whole scenery.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Do I have shitty equipment or do I need to stop using high ISO like 800? During two hours the day before christmas I went out and took a lot of photos, but they all look like crap. Pretty much. Too much noise! And I really need to stop underexposing..
Also, I'm really uninspired when it comes to post processing. I do almost the exact same procedure with every photo. But good news! I finally got accepted to a university class about digital post processing (in swedish: Digital Bildbehandling i Jönköping). Yay!
I've also decided to do a 366 project next year. It'll be tough but I'm hoping to learn a lot from it!
I know this photo is taken with flash on, i know picturewise it does not mean a lot, but i had to put it here. These three boys are watching their first film in a cinema ever in their lives. They live in Mardin, southeast of Turkey. There is no cinema in the city and they have never left their city. The municipality organized a film festival and they were showing films at an open air cinema, where they put a screen in the town hall, they brought plastic chairs in the centre of the town and showed films for free for the locals of Mardin, most of t whom did not know what it is. These boys were nailed in front of a scene where other boys at their age was playing football in the film. It was a moment of 'cinema paradiso.'
You know how we hustle for the RFC. I'm holding a ridiculous amount of 20 dollar bills I collected at the gala by showing off my cleavage and convincing people they really needed a new ring.
Stealing quiet on my bed and fighting wars inside my head while counting footprints on the ceiling. Blank and colorless tapestries, the voices yell inside of me and I knew then the paint was peeling.
You say you know this misery, well thats no more than sympathy for me cause this time you were faking. Your motive very questioning. This silence is so defining now see, you see you've got me shaking, screaming, cursing; then you spit and saying all your worthless shit and I, of course I'm worth hearing. I don't know of what I sing but you my friend don't know anything and that's what makes you not worth fearing.

Does anyone know what this segment of the mountain is called?
I'm wondering if rock climbers have climbed up there.
I know her name was Shellie.
I know she was 21 years old.
I know she drove a Dodge truck.
I know she was driving too fast on that county road.
I know she must have loved those boots she was wearing, as the soles were well-worn.
I know she had a job at the local hardware store.
I know Joey did the right thing in staying with her and praying for her soul.
I know I did the right thing by attending to her friends who were in shock and waiting for help.
I know I did not want those two boys to see their dead friend.
I know I have cried for her every day since then.
I know I will never forget her even though I have never seen her face.
RIP Shellie Dawn Haley 7/7/1990-4/25/2012
Every great once in a while you are called upon to witness something horrific and you have to pull yourself up by your emotional bootstraps and do what is necessary. The only further thing I will say about that is let your loved ones know how you feel because you don't know when or if you will ever see them again.

I don't know if anyone ever reads my descriptions, but I write them anyway, so there!!
Was out today (August 20th 2021) on a forced vacation day, from 9:30AM til' almost 4PM. 80F today but it felt like 100F. This is a very active line and I probably flicked 20 freights today. 750+ flicks. By the time I get rid of a few duplicates, and bad ones, I'm guessing it'll be about 700 +/-. 700 to straighten, fix any color issues, upload, and also ID the writers. It's lots of time and as you can imagine, it's a lot of work, but so far it's been fun. I'm trying to not rush myself to post before I'm ready. I already have the flicks, and they're timeless. So getting them posted ASAP!!!!!! is not really my concern. Duh..
Had an interesting interaction with a guy while out there. Guy with backpack had walked back and forth across the tracks a few times. The lat time I saw him he was on the other side of a set, about 100 yards away. Next thing you know he's coming closer..... Closer..... And I'm like WTF? I'm way out here minding my own business. He walks within' like 10 ft. of me and I say "How ya' doin'?" he says something, and then says "Trains?" and I say "Yep." and he says "Oh.." and walks away. I think he was feelin' me out, as there's a small population of people who's homes are shall I say, mobile. I've talked to a few of them, and have never had a bad interaction, I just don't like people walkin' up on me when I'm trying to get away from the rest of the world out by the tracks. I go out there to get away from people, not to interact.
======================
I follow some other amazing photographers on flickr, but for this I will talk about the ones who flick the freights. There are a few that I really love. Some it's because of the great locations they shoot at, and others it's the amazing little details they manage to capture. For me (right now) I don't have the luxury of walking the lines and seeing pieces static. 99.999% of my flicks the freight is rolling by at 10-50 mph and sometimes I don't really even know what I have until I get home, dump the memory cards and go through the photos. Because of this, most of my flicks are just straight on shots and documenting what I saw and where. I saw this freight here, on this date, here's what was on it, and i captured it. Buffed or scraped next week, well I have it on "film" for future generations (sounds corny, I know). There are times when a freight will stop in-front of me, and I'll walk up and get some shots of monikers, but it's rare.
Obviously in any area there are sidings where freights park for extended periods, I know a few spots, but as I get older, and older, do I really want to leave my car parked on the side of the road and walk 2 miles to capture some little details I might normally miss? I'd love to, but it's just not practical for me at this time, any many other people do it better than I could. Retirement is getting closer every day, maybe then, when my weekdays are free. :-)

During the Covid lockdown, I was working from home, and I was getting out benching like 2 & 3 times a month. Back at work, I'm lucky to have the energy to get out once a month. Every time I do manage to get out, I come home and my batteries feel re-charged. It's been so f-ing hot here in SoCal though, I can't wait for cooler weather and some clouds in the sky.
As always, thanks to the writers!

is quite large.
A couple that I got to know for a couple of months, we became friends over these months.
The pretty bride has known a lot of photographer in Singapore, it’s my truly my pleasure to be chosen as a photographer for the biggest day of her life.
They were charming, loving and pretty all day long, I had never been tired taking photos of them,
and they even had prepared meals for us who making this day happens.
As a wedding photographer, I always want to get closer to the couple before the actual event comes, get to know their needs, their likes, and always try to create the chemistry with the couple and the beloved friends around them. I want them to feel comfortable on the wedding day, during the photo sessions especially. For that, I always go for extra miles beyond I had promised on the paper.
I always work on my assignment with all my heart, I never treat it just to complete my job.
Apart from God’s grace and blessing, I believe this is why I am able to be where I am.
It was really a great day to witness their moments.
A big congratulations to Thaw Zin & Win Lei,
and wish you all have a lovely family and a happy life together.

Do you know the street safety rules around school buses?
The school year in Virginia has just begun, and that means that school buses will be back out on the road.
Do YOU know the rules for driving and stopping around school buses?
1.When you see a school bus stopped with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign on the side of the bus, you must stop your vehicle from any direction, if you are on a highway, private road or school road. You must stay stopped until the area is clear, and the bus is moving again.
2.If a bus is loading or letting off passengers and the signals are not on, you still must stop.
3.If you are driving on a road in the opposite direction with a road that has a median or a barrier, and the bus is on the other side, then you do not have to stop.
Make sure to follow the rules of the road and be safe this school year.
