Yeah, I know it's blurry. But we found the telescope! Funny what you can find when you finally decide to clean out from under the couches (I was looking for an overdue DVD).
Other things that helped me start getting my mojo back:
- making my first flickr video
- doing some crafts with the boys (making a cat mask, making bead coasters from IKEA, framing some of their art)
- turning on music from Madagascar and dancing with the boys
I am still not totally well, but things are definitely looking up (the sunshine is totally helping).
Oh, and here is something interesting (to me, at least) that I didn't realize till I uploaded this picture. I am right-handed, but left-eyed and left-eared. I look through things with my left eye exclusively (cameras, telescopes) and I talk on the phone with my left ear, etc. My mother is left-handed for cutting, eating, writing, and batting, but right-handed for pitching, bowling, brushing hair, etc. It is called "cross-dominance" - it's not true ambidexterity because she can't do the same things equally with both hands. Anyway, Tiny Dancer eats, draws, and cuts with his left hand. But here I discovered that he is apparently right eye dominant!
Maimonides/Rambam
(1135-1204)
If one did not know that Maimonides was the name of a man, Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote, one would assume it was the name of a university. The writings and achievements of this twelfthcentury Jewish sage seem to cover an impossibly large number of activities. Maimonides was the first person to write a systematic code of all Jewish law, the Mishneh Torah; he produced one of the great philosophic statements of Judaism, The Guide to the Perplexed; published a commentary on the entire Mishna; served as physician to the sultan of Egypt; wrote numerous books on medicine; and, in his "spare time," served as leader of Cairo's Jewish community
Ibn Sina / Avicenna
One of the most famous exponents of Muslim universalism and an eminent figure in Islamic learning was Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna (981-1037). For a thousand years he has retained his original renown as one of the greatest thinkers and medical scholars in history. His most important medical works are the Qanun (Canon) and a treatise on Cardiac drugs. The 'Qanun fi-l-Tibb' is an immense encyclopedia of medicine. It contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments
Hungry? Would you like to know what and how astronauts eat in space? Space food significantly differs from our usual food which we eat every day at home; first of all it is specially cooked and specially packed. We have the opportunity not only to learn but also to taste the space food and to try to cook it with the help of the special simulator, which is the part of the astronauts’ training technical means on the ISS Russian Segment Life support system. (It is really yummy, actually😉) feel free to contact us for more information! #вежительтур

You know, a rattlesnake will do anything to avoid a confrontation. It will run; it will hide. But come too close, and it will rattle its tail. Mess with it even more, and you will end up with 2 round red venom-filled puncture marks somewhere on your body.
When I came home from the dump and the grocery store and found this Fellowship-Church-hired school bus parked unattended and with the doors open, in front of my driveway, I saw red. Then I called Brownlee Transportation, whose supervisor was none too pleased to find out one of his buses was unattended; he apologized profusely for what his driver did and contacted her by phone.
When she got back, she proceeded to have an extended conversation with the Fellowship Church parking lot guard about where she could park, WHILE SHE WAS STILL PARKED IN FRONT OF MY DRIVEWAY, WHILE I WAS WAITING TO GET INTO MY GARAGE!
I may have gotten a little loud and belligerent. "Have your ******* conversation someplace else, but MOVE THIS BUS!" But it worked; she moved. Then, the guard, who was young enough to be my grandson, starts giving me lip. "She wasn't parked. She was just sitting. She was gonna leave!" So then I had to chew HIM out. And he will be reported to the higher-ups at Fellowship, and I told him as much. So I hope he has his lies together; I have pictures.
These pictures will be going to Fellowship's website after I finish uploading them here. Am I overreacting? No. If I've learned one thing in 55 years on this earth, it's that if you give people (including church people) an inch, they'll take a mile. Like the church secretary who said, "You mean you have a problem with our people parked there, even if it's just for a minute?"
I will not put up with this, ever, even from faith-based organizations, even on Sunday, even for a minute, even for a second. I pay property taxes for the use of my driveway 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Guess who's the only one who decides who parks in front of it, even for a fraction of a second? My driveway, my street, my block, my neighborhood.

I don't know if this sea lion training is being done by a private organization or the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_Marine_Mammal_Pr...). I missed the sea lion being let out of the holding crate by seconds.
Was it him? Was it this the man she had know years before? Should she appraoch, engage him in conversation? If only she could hear him speak, his voice alone would answer her question. But she was too shy lest he vent an anger upon her.
The train arrived and he alighted, never for her to see him again. It had been 20 years since she last met the man she so adored. She stayed on the platform, regretting her shyness. And a tear appeared in her eye.

The muskrat knows how to penetrate the ice. These mounts [feeding platforms] not only provide a channel to escape to the surface or below, in spring they also cause the ice to melt premature around the mounts, opening up the lake early for waterfowl to land, fish to surface, or eagles and kingfishers to grab their lunch from.
"Sapere aude is a Latin phrase meaning "dare to be wise", or more precisely "dare to know". Originally used by Horace, later becoming closely associated with The Enlightenment by Immanuel Kant in his seminal essay, What is Enlightenment?"
I know, there’s not much of a correlation between kiwi and a triangle, but I wanted to creatively use the kiwis to make art. I wanted the kiwis to act like paint so that my audience can focus on a subject that was made using kiwis. I really like the color of kiwis and how it contrast on a white background. This is the final piece to my fruit group, and it gives off a very simple yet creative idea. I wanted to use Kiwis to show a picture, so I got the idea of cutting it into pieces to create a flower or something. Along the way, I experimented and thought the kiwis looked better when they were placed in the way I have it in the picture. To me, it somehow reminds me of the illuminati, but to keep it simple, I decided to not draw the eye since it would shift away attention from my theme which is simple and creative foods in real life. It was composed in this way to surprise viewers and make them think of what it is. It’s very easy to spot the triangle as long as viewers take into consideration the placement of the kiwis. What makes this photo interesting is the fact that it’s art using fruits. Like the other photos in my portfolio, I tried using fruits, vegetables, and grains to make creative and simple looking things. Most of the foods in my portfolio are fresh foods that don’t need to be cooked. The emotions that I was trying to get out of it is probably making viewers surprised and in awe about my creation. I want them leaving the photo with a “Oh, now I get it!” It bumps their spirit and self esteem and the green contrast can really brighten up someone’s day. For settings, I used and ISO of 200 to make up the lost of sunlight in the picture. Aperture is to 3.2 since I didn’t want my camera to blur out parts and used a shutter speed of 1/25 to create a sharp and clear image.
Norio knows it's the warmest day of the year (so far) and so a tunic isn't needed. With spring here, he'll probably only tunics at night time until next fall.
They said a good way of gaining self-knowledge
was to talk to yourself while looking in a mirror,
but without my glasses on I couldn’t see too well
and I wound up thinking I was someone else.
Then I met someone, who by the same process,
had convinced themselves they were me
and seeing as I didn’t have my glasses on,
who the hell was I to argue?

When NASA was first established in 1958 they originally decided to use "Prisoners" as Astronauts.
President Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower stopped that idea, saying they needed to use "Military Pilots" because they were the best qualified to be astronauts.
This interesting short video shows military pilot Alan Shepard preparing to fly an "F-102 Fighter Interceptor".
USG's chapter of Students Engaged in Public Health (SEIPH) partnered with our Office of Student Services to host "Know Your Numbers: Reduce Your Risk for Stroke," a USG Civic Engagement Event which took place on April 1, 2015.
"Know Your Numbers" served to raise awareness and promote prevention of stroke and hypertension (high blood pressure), which are very serious health issues in the United States.
The event featured an expert panel, information booths, and free blood pressure screenings. Panelists included Dr. Ulder Tillman of the Montgomery County Health Department, Dr. Rebecca Fitch of Kaiser Permanente, and Susan Emery and Tammy Shepherd from Circle of Rights, Inc. Representatives from the American Heart Association, Community Clinic Inc., Salisbury University's Exercise Science program, the UMB School of Pharmacy, and the UMD School of Public Health were also on hand to provide information for attendees.

Ok I know this is a day late for Flickr Group Roulette and not a self portrait. Sue me. I was tired yesterday and got today and yesterday's themes mixed. I shot today's yesterday. I'm still PS'ing it to come out right. Found these jars while roaming Cost Plus a while back.
Germans love sausages and apparently they often create different sizes to suit one's pleasure and need. Heeeee. Reading International packaging and wording can be fun.
Did You Know?
This is the only portrait by Leonardo Da Vinci in the Western Hemisphere.
Leonardo da Vinci painted this portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, a young Florentine noblewoman who, at the age of sixteen, married Luigi Niccolini in 1474. The work may have been an engagement or wedding portrait, or it may have been commissioned by Bernardo Bembo, the Venetian Ambassador to Florence and Ginevra's close friend and admirer.
On the reverse side of the painting, a wreath of laurel and palm encircles a sprig of juniper and a scroll bears the Latin inscription, "Beauty Adorns Virtue."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She was the daughter of a wealthy Florentine banker, and her portrait—the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas—was probably commissioned about the time of her marriage at age sixteen. Leonardo himself was only about six years older. The portrait is among his earliest experiments with the new medium of oil paint; some wrinkling of the surface shows he was still learning to control it. Still, the careful observation of nature and subtle three-dimensionality of Ginevra's face point unmistakably to the new naturalism with which Leonardo would transform Renaissance painting. Unlike the man in Castagno's portrait nearby, Ginevra is modeled with gradually deepening veils of smoky shadow—not by line, not by abrupt transitions of color or light.
Other features of Ginevra's portrait reveal young Leonardo as an innovator. He placed her in an open setting at a time when women were still shown carefully sheltered within the walls of their family homes, with landscapes glimpsed only through an open window. The three-quarter pose, which shows her steady reserve, is among the first in Italian portraiture, for either sex.
At some time in the past, probably because of damage, the panel was cut down by a few inches along the bottom, removing Ginevra's hands. A drawing by Leonardo survives that may suggest their appearance—lightly cradled at her waist and holding a small sprig, perhaps a pink, a flower commonly used in Renaissance portraits to symbolize devotion or virtue. Ginevra's face is framed by the spiky, evergreen leaves of a juniper bush, the once brighter green turned brown with age. Juniper refers to her chastity, the greatest virtue of a Renaissance woman, and puns her name. The Italian for juniper is ginepro.
The vast majority of female portraits were commissioned on one of two occasions: betrothal or marriage. Wedding portraits tend to be made in pairs, with the woman on the right side. Since Ginevra faces right, this portrait is more likely to have commemorated her engagement. Her lack of obvious finery, however, is somewhat surprising. Jewels, luxurious brocades, and elaborate dresses were part of dowry exchange and intended to display family wealth.
Contemporaries called Ginevra "la Bencina," a diminutive. They praised her piety and virtue, the beauty of her golden curls and brown eyes, and her intellect. A single line of her poetry survives: "I ask your forgiveness, I am a mountain tiger." Lorenzo de' Medici—de facto ruler of Florence and great patron of learning and the arts—dedicated two sonnets to her. Other poets celebrate Ginevra and Venetian ambassador Bernardo Bembo. They shared a devotion informed by Neoplatonic philosophy, which saw beauty—physical and moral—as a way to apprehend the divine. Platonic love, which stirred the soul toward God, was exalted by humanists and became a courtly fashion among the Florentine elite.
