Locally people know this as BYT, The Big Yellow Thing, and according to my niece some of her fellow students refer to it as Archimedes’ Balls. It has an official title ‘Galway Yellow’ and was presented to the University by P.J. Carrol & Co. Ltd., along with the Arts Council. Since then it has been placed on Galway City Council’s protected structure list. While that might surprise many of those who pass by the sculpture every day, it’s worth remembering that, as a representative example of King’s early work and of ‘modern’ Irish art in the 1970s more generally, Galway Yellow has a value beyond the intrinsic merits of the piece itself.
Brian King was born in Dublin in 1942, he studied in the National college of Art and Design in Dublin , where he lectured for a number of years and, and then became the Head of the Department of Sculpture from 1984–2004.
He participated in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art from 1964 to 1978, won the Carroll’s Award 1965, And served as its President for the last ten years. In 1969 and 1983 he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale, on the former occasion becoming the first Irish artist to win the major individual prize. His public commissions are typically large-scale metal sculptures in an abstract, minimalist style, based on simple geometric forms.
Solo exhibitions include Dawson Gallery, Dublin (1968,74,75); Ulster Museum , Belfast (1973); Project Arts Gallery, Dublin (1980); Taylor Galleries , Dublin (1979, 82,88,90) and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (1982). He has participated in major group exhibitions across Ireland and Europe, and his work is held in public collections including The Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin; Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork; RTE; Bank of Ireland; Allied Irish Bank; University of Ulster and University College, Dublin, and Farmleigh House, Dublin.
Shut up, I know it's not really a gate. Gargoyles are cool, and that is pretty much the only reason I took the shot. Like, look at the face on that thing, a detail that I did my damnedest to maintain despite increasing the shadows a lot.
I'm not so sure I like this, but I'm always very hesitant about heavy shadow. I'm just not sure it adds anything in this case, since it doesn't really accentuate anything worth accentuating. I wanted to focus more on the face/gargoyle and have that be the focus, but at the same time I wanted the rest of it to loom a bit sinister-like. Also, going long lens on the face would be too portrait-like, while actually just taking photography of art, which is somehow even more dull than what I've done here.
I dunno, I just find the shot disappointing overall.

Didn’t know Canon made 126 Instamatic cameras? Me neither. Canon was a partner with Bell & Howell in the 1960’s. That I knew. They made a variety of 8mm movie cameras and co-branded some 35mm equipment, too. A browse around the Canon camera museum holds some surprises.

This camera is really not very exceptionally well-built and not what you’d call a contender for collecting. Then I saw the “rangefinder” it used. I had to have it.
The camera featured a “Focus-Matic” system to help the user set the camera’s focus distance. A model of engineering simplicity and error potential. The “rangefinder” used a steel ball (bearing) in a curved slot on the side of the camera. The location of all this is critical. By pointing the lens at the foot of someone you wished to photograph, then pressing the ball release once and then letting go to freeze its location rolling down the slot, the system used the delta angle with which you pointed downward to tell where to set the lens distance.

What about shooting vertically? Ah, remember it’s a 126 square negative format, so there’s no problem there. After all this trigonometry, you then applied the indicated distance to the lens manually. Thankfully, the camera took care of all exposure concerns while you fiddled with the focus.
Of course, you needed to be on the same level as the person you were shooting. So if you wanted a shot of your kid up a tree, or tried to take a photo of something other than a person, oops! Still, it did work for the most part for standard family snaps.
The 40mm f/3.5 lens was made by Canon under the Bell & Howell name. No idea if it was any good, but let’s pretend it was typically stellar by Canon standards.

I know a few people making these and they are all so lovely I wanted to try to make my own version of it. This one was for my father. He loved it.
Once in a while I see something online or in a store and think that I don't need to buy it because I could make my own. That's what I've been up to since we moved last July: making things to cozy up in our new home (update). I'll try to take a few photos to share which brings me to this post.
I meant to share more of the skirts embellishment I'm working on. The problem is that if we don't have good enough photographs we don't post them at all. It's taken a long time (for me specially) to learn how to take good photos. We try to get the best background matching the piece, the light has to be just right so we don't have to retouch the image. It's a poor excuse to leave all of you waiting for so long. I'll try to have more wip images (work in progress) which we usually post in Rob's Flickr blog as well. We want to share whatever we are tinkering with at the time. This is why we don't have a blog (instead of a Flickr blog as we call it) and why Rob has a Tumblr. The pressure of a daily post and getting back to everyone's comments would be too much. But please feel free to email us, leave your comments here, and follow us. Flickr has been good to us and many of our followers have found us here. We post images and a short explanation to document our work and share online. Here's to another year of many more posts! Norio knows today marks the start of a new year and hopes everyone's year is better than last year. He also knows Naomi just warmed up a warming disk (the polka-dot covered one) and that it's his and no one else's.
“I’m being very rude, I know. But it’s better this way, really.”
I opened my eyes. His face was very serious.
“I don’t know what you mean,” I said, my voice guarded.
“It’s better if we’re not friends,” he explained. “Trust me.”
My eyes narrowed. I’d heard that before.
“It’s too bad you didn’t figure that out earlier,” I hissed through my teeth. “You could have saved yourself all this regret.”
“Regret?” The word, and my tone, obviously caught him off guard. “Regret for what?”
“For not just letting that stupid van squish me.”
He was astonished. He stared at me in disbelief.
When he finally spoke, he almost sounded mad. “You think I regret saving your life?”
“I know you do,” I snapped.
“You don’t know anything.” He was definitely mad.
I turned my head sharply away from him, clenching my jaw against all the wild accusations I wanted to hurl at him. I gathered my books together, then stood and walked to the door. I meant to sweep dramatically out of the room, but of course I caught the toe of my boot on the doorjamb and dropped my books. I stood there for a moment, thinking about leaving them. Then I sighed and bent to pick them up. He was there; he’d already stacked them into a pile. He handed them to me, his face hard.
“Thank you,” I said icily.
His eyes narrowed.
“You’re welcome,” he retorted.
Norio knows (or is reasonably expected to know) that if I walk around with a camera or cell phone, I'll take his picture.
I don't know if Albert EInstein would have really made this statement - you know about what you read on the internet.... I was amused however and I had this shot from my last trip to the laundromat. A perfect pairing to reflect on how grateful I am that there are routine activities that keep me going when iI can't get past some big problem. The best solution I've learned is to keep up the routine, and eventually I'm not thinking about the big problem or focusing on the minutiae either.
So, Professor Einstein, I have to keep returning to the laundromat because I have been blessed that this is not the last day of my life, and I have run out of underwear....
Norio knows his new favorite spot isn't as warm as his old favorite spot, but it's different, so that's fine.
You know what divides Asians from non Asians? Non Asians find it almost impossible to squat flat footed, they will almost always have to balance on the toes and the front part of the foot.
Go ahead and try....unless you do yoga, or are Asian, you will probably find it very difficult.
This security guard manages to look fully dignified, natural and stable whilst squatting, but can you imagine his European or American counterpart doing the same?
We know that a star’s childhood is turbulent: growing via a disc of gas and dust, the same disc from which planets form. Young stars also experience outbursts, expelling material via fast jets that regulate how much material is left to feed the young stars and form planets around it. Today’s Picture of the Week shows one of those jets interacting with the surrounding material.
The background image, taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows the young star SVS 13, located in the star-forming region NGC 1333 about 1000 light-years away. This star is expelling gas in the form of clumps known as “molecular bullets”. The insets show observations of one of those “bullets” taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which ESO is a partner. Each frame displays gas moving at different speeds, ranging from 35 km/s (red) to 97 km/s (blue).
This series of images is similar to a medical tomography, and allows astronomers to reconstruct the 3D shape of the rings and shells of gas that the jet creates as it interacts with its environment. “This is the first time such a degree of fine detail has been reached, thanks to the exquisite sensitivity achieved in our study with ALMA,” said Guillermo Blazquez-Calero, lead author of the study recently published in Nature Astronomy. This will help astronomers understand the not-so-peaceful infancy of stars and how planets form around them.

I know, I know - this is a virtual ghost tour, not a Queen Mary tour. Sorry if my enthusiasm carries me away. It's time to get back to the ghosts!
And this one is one of the most famous: you archetypical "Woman in White".
Welcome to the Queen's Salon! In the old cruising days of the Queen Mary this room was known as the First Class Lounge. It used to house a piano and in the evenings after dinner it would be your usual wall-to-wall evening dresses, tuxes and champagne.
How the mighty have fallen.
Today it plays host to conferences of geeks (like us) and gawking Hollywood stars who probably all think it looks slightly rougher than the Burj-Al-Arab in Dubai.
And yes, that's why I was there. No, not because I'm a Hollywood Star. I was attending a conference so yes, I got paid to be on the Queen Mary.
But back to the ghosts....
The Queen's Salon, as I mentioned, was used for after-dinner dances and apparently one of the guests has decided to never leave the place even though her cruise ended many decades ago.
Guests have reported over the years seeing a beautiful young lady dressed in a white evening dress. To music no living ear can hear, she dances in the shadows of the room all by herself.
Occassionally guests outside the room walking along the Promenade hear the sounds of music and voices coming from the Queen's Salon, even though it is empty and contains no sound system (our conference had to bring their own).
Finally, strange lights and "floating orbs" are seen in this room. On my first night on the QM I met a fellow who had arrived early with the conference organizers. He had a very expensive DSLR with IR capablities and he'd had a special first night tour of the ship with some of the conference organizers. Of course they visited all the sites on the ship said to be haunted. So he set off with his camera, as did the others, and caught a few shots, usually in quick multiple takes so he could see if something changed from one shot to the next.
And guess what - he caught something.
Five somethings to be exact. Two came from around this area and the guest cabins if I remember right. They were orbs of light that appeared in one photo, but weren't present in the photo taken just a fraction of a second before and a fraction after.
Of the other three things he found, two came from the boiler rooms and engine area. That's the second most haunted area of the ship.
The final one came from the pool area, which is the most haunted area of the Queen Mary.
All three shots were quite impressive, but the one from the pool area was... very disturbing and creepy.
And before you ask, no, I don't have copies. I don't have copies because he doesn't want people he doesn't know to see them. This guy is interested in ghost (who isn't?) but doesn't want his name associated with anything paranormal. He's got a very nice career, thank you, working as a senior scientist for NASA.

Margaret ignores him as she plans to wed Philip Easton, a penniless bond salesman. The furious Recka, poses as a friend to Easton, while planning to ruin him. His henchmen kidnap Easton when he is carrying a large assignment of bonds, and he is branded as a runaway thief. The only doubters are Margaret and Police Inspector Brandon, who knows Recka's methods and suspects foul play. Easton is found in an abandoned house and arrested as the gangsters have taken the bonds and tipped the police where to find him. Recka offers to clear Easton if Margaret will become his bride and, while her hatred for Recka is intense, her love
FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN STAR!

Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!

Based on a Fu Manchu novel by Sax Rohmer.
Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."
The Personal Anna May Wong
This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."
The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she
had been Anna May White?
Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.

Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

Heard a siren fly past my house yesterday afternoon, didn't find out until this morning, he drowned in his backyard pool, he was a good swimmer, as far as l know, so l don't know how this happened, he was 9 years old, for some reason, thought he was older, but rememebered this was his first year playing for the under 10's

Trump “knows I’m telling the truth,” Daniels said.
Stephanie Clifford, who goes by the name Stormy Daniels, detailed her alleged affair with President Donald Trump and how she was threatened to stay silent in a highly anticipated “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper that aired Sunday night.
Daniels, who says she had a consensual affair with Trump in 2006 and 2007, is currently suing the president over the validity of a nondisclosure agreement she signed just before the 2016 election barring her from discussing the affair.
“It started off all about him just talking about himself,” Daniels said of the first time she met Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe in July 2006. She says she poked fun of the way Trump was hitting on her, trying to impress her with his own photo on a magazine cover.
“And I was like, ‘Someone should take that magazine and spank you with it,’” Daniels said. “And I’ll never forget the look on his face.”
Trump allegedly compared Daniels to his daughter. When they had sex later that evening, he did not use a condom, and she did not ask him to, she says. Ex-Playboy playmate Karen McDougal made similar comments about her alleged affair with Trump.
Trump and Daniels reportedly kept in touch and saw each other for nearly a year after the first night they had sex but were not intimate again after their encounter in Lake Tahoe.
Daniels said that details of the affair began to leak to the press in 2011, and she gave an interview for $15,000 to a sister publication of the tabloid, In Touch. But the interview never ran and she was never paid. Daniels says an unidentified man approached and threatened her in a parking lot.
“I was in a parking lot, going to a fitness class with my infant daughter,” she said. “And a guy walked up on me and said to me, ‘Leave Trump alone. Forget the story.’ And then he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, ‘That’s a beautiful little girl. It’d be a shame if something happened to her mom.’ And then he was gone.”
Daniels says she did not go to the police because she was scared, and the threat influenced her decision to sign a nondisclosure agreement before the 2016 presidential election and accept $130,000 of what she calls “hush money” from Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen.
“I was concerned for my family and their safety,” she said.

Though the adult film star previously denied the affair, she’s now arguing that she should be released from the agreement and be free to speak publicly of her former relationship with Trump as the president did not sign the document.
Cohen has admitted to paying Daniels $130,000. Trump’s lawyers are threatening to make her pay $1 million every time she violates the nondisclosure agreement. The White House has denied any affair occurred.
“He knows I’m telling the truth,” Daniels said of the president.
The adult film star and her lawyer Michael Avenatti have claimed before she has evidence of her affair with Trump.
However, during the “60 Minutes” interview, both Daniels and Avenatti would not definitively say if they had text messages, video or photographic evidence of the affair.
“My attorney has recommended that I don’t discuss those things,” she said.

Who knows how much snow we can expect this time arond but there is plenty happening in the local bus scene around Stafford. I have heard that Julian Peddle has bought out the remaining shares in D&G and also acquired Arriva's Cannock Garage. One wonders if we will get a kind of Centre-West North West, or Midlands but Select which Peddle also is involved with will see some changes too. Rumours are swirling around about Stagecoach trying to win First Potteries now that they feel it must go. I think Stagecoach have been interested for a while but the price was too high. If all these changes do come to pass of the original big groups all we will see in Stafford is the Arriva service coming in from Telford and West Midlands from Wolverhampton the rest will be the 'Independents'.

P1740091 - As a number of you know I do some of these challenges and towards the end of the month I start to realise that having thought about various shots or trying to locate something is not going to well. There is a sudden burst of interconnectiveness either in a holistic form or quanta not sure how it happens or the improbability drive kicks in.
A work colleague and me had been through a bit of rough morning with stuff, I was think I'll go chill out and take a few shots, so off we went, deciding to take the complete opposite route to what is normally taken, maybe it was the hope that we got lost perhaps! If you knew the area this is not a tough decision to make, go right and your in a shopping mall go left and you're in the historic docks car park. Went left and continued walking, discussing how bland the walk was and each of us had spent some time in the museum shop, then a building caught our eye, not been in there before and there we go the pealing on the lean wall.

Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

I know I've been neglecting Flickr. I guess when you start using your camera for 'work', it's harder to use it for 'fun'. (at least for me)....Shot in the front yard of a recent real estate shoot, this image is actually three images of the same bird as it came to a flower to feed.
The bird at the flower is part of the original image, while the other two (in flight) were placed there via PS6 (Photoshop)

It is easy to miss St Nicholas, set back from the main road between Dover and Deal, but when you see it, you will know, as the red brick tower and cupola over the stair turret.
I was here for the forth time, once with the Ramblers, when we approached the church through the overgrown meadow from the street. Second I went inside and took a few snaps, and in in 2012 I brought my friend Simon here as part of a mammoth 20 church tour of east Kent.
Time for a revisit.
It was a grim morning, rain falling hard when I parked the car on the narrow side road, grabbed my gear and hoped that the church would be open: it was.

Standing on high ground in a manicured churchyard, St Nicholas is full of interest. Its 17th century tower is a pleasing mixture of flint and stone and is capped with a jaunty cupola - quite an East Kent feature (see also Sandwich St Peter and Woodnesborough). The interior is an odd shape as the tower fills the west end of the nave and the 14th century north aisle runs along its north face - not odd when ones thinks of the chronology but definitely odd to the casual visitor. The nave is dominated by the rather crude three bay arcade to the north aisle dating from the 14th century, whilst the chancel is crammed with tablets to 18th and 19th century residents, particularly the Monins family who are still Patrons of the living. On, of 1806, is signed `Bacon Junior`. Two of the north chancel windows retain their original stonework. Opposite is a simple double sedilia whose arches are dissimilar - that to the east having a nicely shouldered arch whilst its companion is severely plain. There is some fine stained glass (although the best representation of St Nicholas with the boys in the tub is under the tower and difficult to see). A more modern representation of the Patron Saint is in the north aisle accompanied by St Francis, whilst nearby are the rarely portrayed Lois, Eunice and Dorcas. The stonework of this window is Victorian and tries to make a statement although, in reality it cuts out the central light. All in all a most pleasant and welcoming church.

RINGWOLD,
OR as it is now usually called, Ring jole, lies the next parish to Walmer, southward; being written in antient records, Ridlingweald. It has been, as well as the ville or hamlet of Kingsdown, within the bounds of it, long since esteemed part of the cinque ports, and a member of the port of Dover; to which it was again united and confirmed by king Henry VI. and continues so at this time.
THIS PARISH is situated on high ground, adjoining the northern hills of this part of East Kent, in a country of uninclosed common fields of corn; the soil is mostly chalky, but much of it is fertile land. The high road from Deal to Dover goes through the village, in which the church and parsonage-house is situated. The parish is both healthy and pleasant, with beautiful prospects over the Downs and neighbouring country.—About half a mile eastward from the village of Ringwold, within the bounds of this parish, is the ville and hamlet of Kingsdown, which adjoins to the sea-shore, and appears to have been, in early times, a place of some account, by its being mentioned by name with Ringwold, in the charters of the cinque ports. It is now a small fishing village, where on the side next to Walmer, the poor fishermen by a capstan wind up on shore their boats, commonly called Kingsdown boats. In the valley between the two downs or hill sides near this, there are the remains of an antient camp. Darell says, this place was formerly called Roman Codde, and vulgarly Romny Coddy, which he interprets Romanorum fortitudo, the fortitude of the Romans. There is no fair.
THE MANOR OF RINGWOLD, in the time of the Conqueror, was in the possession of Fulbert de Dover, as part of his barony of Chilham, in whose descendants, (fn. 1) and in the Strabolgies, earls of Athol, this manor continued in like manner as Chilham, till it was forfeited by one of them to the crown, where it staid till king Edward II. in his 5th year, granted it to Bartholomew de Badlesmere, who in the 9th year of it ob. tained the grant for a market weekly, on a Tuesday, at his manor of Ridelingwold, and a fair there, on the eve, day, and morrow after the festival of St. Nicholas, and free-warren likewise within all his demesne lands within it. His son Giles de Badlesmere died s. p. in the 12th year of king Edward III. leaving his four sisters his coheirs, and Elizabeth his wife, daughter of William Montacute, earl of Salisbury, surviving, who became entitled to it for her life; she afterwards married Hugh de Despencer, who in her right became possessed of it; she survived him likewise, and died anno 33 king Edward III. possessed of this manor, held of the king in capite, by the service of finding a man armed to the guard of the sea-coast, whenever the same should be necessary, for all service.
Upon her death, this manor, on the further partition of the inheritance of the sisters of Giles de Badlesmere, was allotted to Maud the eldest, wife of John de Vere, earl of Oxford, who in her right became possessed of it, and died the next year, holding this manor in capiteas of the castle of Dover. His grandson Robert, earl of Oxford, was by king Richard II. created Marquis, and Duke of Ireland; but he was afterwards banished the realm, and all his possessions, excepting his entailed lands, confiscated, which latter only were to remain to his right heirs. (fn. 2) On the confiscation of the duke of Ireland's unentailed estates, this manor afterwards came by grant to Sir Robert Belknap, chief justice of the common pleas, who was likewise attainted and banished into Ireland in the 11th year of that reign.
In the 2d year of king Henry V. on the petition of Sir Hamon Belknap, his son, the parliament enabled him in blood and land to his father, notwithstanding the judgment made against him, and he was reinstated in this manor. His three sons, John, William, and Henry, each successively inherited this manor; the latter left one son Edward, and four daughters; the former resided at Weston, in Warwickshire, and in the beginning of king Henry the VIIIth's reign was knighted. He died in the 12th year of it, anno 1520, s. p. on which his four sisters became his coheirs, and on the partition of their inheritance, Anne, the youngest, entitled her husband, Sir Robert Wotton, to the possession of this manor, (fn. 3) whose descendant Edward, lord Wotton, conveyed it not long after that to Sir Thomas Edolph, of St. Radigund's, who, in the 13th year of that reign, had a confirmation of the grant of freewarren within his demesne lands of this manor. His grandson Thomas Edolph, esq. alienated this manor to Francis Nicholson, esq. and he, in 1702, passed it away to Edward Holnis, gent. of Bramling-court, who by his first wife had three daughters; Mary, married to John Philips, a dissenting minister; Thomasine, first to Enoch Kingsford, and secondly to John Hugessen; and Bridget, to Zachary Kingsford, and they, by his will, became entitled to this manor in equal shares. At length William Kingsford, esq. of Tunford, the grandson of Zachary above-mentioned, becoming possessed of the whole of this manor, sold it in 1762, together with all his lands whatsoever in this parish, to Mr. Tho. Peck, surgeon, of Deal, who died in 1790, leaving two daughters his coheirs, who marrying two brothers, James Methurst Poynter, and Ambrose Lyon Poynter, esqrs. they are now become, in right of their wives, the present possessors of this manor. A court baron is held for it.
RINGWOLD is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Sandwich.
The church, which is dedicated to St. Nicholas, is a handsome building, having a tower steeple at the west end, in which hang five bells. In the chancel is a mural monument for Richard Dauling, clerk, patron and rector. He died in 1679; arms, On a fess, three acorns. Another for Richard Monins Eaton, clerk, patron and rector, eldest son of Richard Monins, clerk, by Mary his wife, sister of John Daulinge, esq. late patron, obt. 1770; arms, Gules, three crescents, or. In the north isle, an antient grave-stone, coffin-shaped, on which is a cross patonce, on a griece of three steps. Two gravestones for the Edolphs and Gookens; arms on the former, A lozenge, ermine, on a bend, three cinquefoils, impaling the same arms. On the latter; arms, A chevron. ermine, between three cocks, impaling ermine, on a bend, three cinquefoils. In the nave several memorials for the Jekens's, of Oxney. Brass plates for Elizabeth, wife of Robert Gaunt, obt. 1580; for Willia Avere, alys and anne his Wysis; he died anno 1405; and for John Upton, obt. 1530. The steeple is built of flints, with the corners and arches over the windows of red brick, and a date, in figures of iron, 1628. In the churchyard is a remarkable fine yew tree, which measures upwards of twenty feet round.
The church of Ringwold was antiently appendant to the manor, and as such the advowson of it passed through the same several changes of ownership, down to Edward, lord Wotton, who alienated it to Sir William Sidley, of Aylesford, afterwards created a baronet, in whose descendants it continued till it was at length sold in Charles II.'s reign to the family of Dauling; one of whom, Richard Dauling, gent. of London, presented to it in 1679; at length by Mary, daughter of John Dauling, clerk, it passed in marriage to Richard Monins, clerk, prebendary of Bristol, master of the king's school in Canterbury, and rector of Ringwold, who died possessed of it in 1750, on which it came to his eldest surviving son of the same name, who afterwards took the name of Eaton, and was rector of this parish. He died unmarried in 1770, and his younger brother John Monins, esq. now of Canterbury, succeeded to this advowson, of which he is at this time proprietor.
¶The rectory of Ringwold is valued in the king's books at 13l 12s. 6d. and the yearly tenths at 1l. 7s. 3d. In 1578 here were sixty communicants, In 1640, one hundred and seventy communicants, and it was valued at seventy-six pounds. It is now of the reputed clear value of 250l. There are nine acres of glebe land belonging to it.

Here we go again. As the new government changes the rules, visa requirements,"age limits" and places harder restriction on employment of foreigners ,I once again step into "their" never ending revolving door.

Kids are bummed out as is my immediate boss. But the new head director who just came to the school wants to start fresh with his own selection.Nothing I can do about that , I am only a guest in this country.
Sad thing is Thailand has declared 2012 the "Year of English" ? Many foreign teachers from around the country have already pulled up stakes and left shaking their heads in complete frustration !
One of the Thai teachers I work with came to me nearly in tears when the news of my departure had reached her ears.
She said "Mr Jon, the kids will never forget the funny teacher man who taught them English while dancing and singing on top of the teachers desk".
Hay anything that works right? Might mention there was usually a bicycle horn in my hand playing Mr Bojangles while I whistled, sang and did my dance routine. Thank you Sammy Davis jr ..LOL...;-)
Anyway time for a change, "don't want no grass sprouting under my sandals before it's time to pass the baton" .;-)
