Description in English, German and Dutch

English:

Do you know your Pappenheimers?

Pappenheim is a very special town in Bavaria, Germany. For example, the brilliant composer (papa) Haydn wrote the absolute masterpiece 'Pappenheimer Marsch' about Pappenheim's role in the Thirty Years' War. There are now unofficial remix versions of the popular piece in circulation in which hard acid beats also whip up various army units prior to military operations. Pappenheim is also the noble family that for centuries had their main residence in the beautiful castle in my photo. The impressive castle towers high above the historic town and is a real landmark. It's great to watch this from a distance. The fortress has a rich history of bloody battles in which geopolitical interests have played a major role. To come back to the terrible 30 Years War, it is interesting to say that the famous German and Dutch saying or expression 'I know my Pappenheimers' dates from that time. The German general Baron Albrecht von Wallenstein was helped at that time by units of Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim. Von Wallenstein was suspected of treason around 1632. Several regiments had deserted him by then, but the Pappenheimers remained loyal to them and then he said 'I know my Pappenheimers'. More than 100 years later, the phrase became widely known through the famous play Wallensteins Tod by the top writer Friedrich Schiller. The proverb means something like I know who I am dealing or I know them inside out. Nowadays, the saying often has a negative meaning attached to it. That they cannot be trusted. Do you know your Pappenheimers?

Deutsch:

Kennen Sie Ihre Pappenheimer?

Kent u uw Pappenheimers?

this is only for you. Only for you.

No one knows you like a person with whom you've shared a childhood. No one will ever understand you in quite the same way.

Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic (Practical Magic, #1)

I know the light affected how I looked in the photos before this one. Sometimes in the morning I look at myself in the mirror and think, not so bad for someone turning 81 next month, then I wander downstairs and see myself in the broad daylight in the mirrors down there and scream.

the world should only allow pale pink lightbulbs.

these have not been an easy two years for any of us.

I really shouldn't complain.

but I do.

I know that the night is not the same as the day: that all things are different, that the things of the night cannot be explained in the day, because they do not then exist, and the night can be a dreadful time for lonely people once their loneliness has started.

Thanks for all the lovely comments and faves on my images, they are very much appreciated.

Do you know that in Europe thousands and thousands (more than 18k for luftansa this winter and same thing for the other airlines) of planes will fly empty just to keep their airport slots ?

In fact this is because airlines have to use 50% of their slots in order to keep them : nice rule ... but why did they still use it with covid ? It's stupid !!!

So we can no more use our cars to reduce CO2 emission but planes have to fly empty ? This world is mad ...

ps: I dont know if it is the case for this plane in particular, I did the photo as he was flying low over my head ...

This is an unposed portrait (shot with permission) of a homeless man in Bristol. He was sat outside a city centre shop with all his worldly possessions plus dogs.

Unfortunately for him, the helping hand in this instance that looks like an 'angel' touching his shoulder, is that of a shop window mannequin behind him. I didn't consciously notice the juxtaposition at the time so it was not staged.

There are many fake beggars on Britain's streets. I don't know this man's personal story (although I know he is known to homeless outreach workers) BUT that something in his eyes cannot be faked. I know he is in pain. And that makes me feel something.

There is no hurry. We shall get there someday

Well we all know its not but I've been singing along to Roy Orbison as I so often do when a photo 'strikes a chord' as it were... when I am processing a raw file.

Padstow Harbour actually but looking so sunny last October between lockdowns.

Looking like a typical post card and I’m well aware of that but it just epitomises Cornwall for me re the light and colours so I make no apologies for putting this on. Neither a sunrise sunset or slow shutter...the four S’s that a landscape photographer strives for lol. Just that Cornish light that I happen to love ❤️

Thank you so much everyone for all your encouraging comments which I appreciate so much.

I am unable to reply or comment at the moment as I’m not feeling too well at present but I wish you all well....❤️

If I ever leave you, baby

You can say I told you so

And if I ever hurt you

You know, I hurt myself as well

Is that any way for a man to carry on

Do you think I want my loved one gone

Said I love you

More than you'll ever know

More than you'll ever know

When I wasn't making much money

You know where my paycheck went

You know, I brought it home to you, baby

And I never spent a red cent

Is that any way for a man to carry on

Do you think I want my loved one gone

Said I love you

More than you'll ever know, yeah

More than you'll ever know

I don't know, but it seems as though a booth right next to the door would be a good place for a vendor at an antiques fair; your stuff would be the first thing that potential customers see when they enter, and the last thing to tempt them before they walk out. But in this case, the woman with the stroller just walked right past without a glance. Oh well...

I don’t know if it was the face of the soldier seemingly pleading to be taking away from his mortal pains captured in this war dead memorial or just the light I captured it in but it is perhaps the most poignant memorial I have had the pleasure to witness. The statue honors the fallen during the first world war and symbolizes a temple guarded by a lion and lists the names of those that did not return from the battles listed on the sides of the monument.

Italy interestingly started out the start of the first world war in a three way partnership with Germany and the Hapsburgs Austrian-Hungarian Empire but seeing little benefit from this arrangement joined with France and England against its former partners. The long enmity with the Austrians along with the land annexed during those conflicts gave Italy a prize to fight for and a real chance for reclamation of its losses bringing all Italian speaking peoples under one flag.

This shot to me illustrates the main principal I work by when trying to capture the feeling of a new city and that is to walk a lot, though the main sights should be appreciated it is sometimes the sights off the beaten track that I find most interesting. My second guiding principal is my 80/20 rule, meaning that 80% of your best travel shots will come during 20% of the daylight hours It is not always possible for these hours to coincide with your travel but I take great pains to make sure I maximize the golden hours.

I took this on Oct 6th, 2018 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 Lens at 72mm 1/100s f`11 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , and DXO

Do you know that your thoughts can influence not only other people and yourself, but food too.

If I want to give myself a treat I always have good thoughts towards myself, my body and mind and very importantly; the treat I am going to enjoy.

If you think thoughts like "I shouldn't eat this, its not healthy, I'm going to regret it afterwards", all your energy falls negatively and influence everything, even your food.

Being aware when you eat, not putting your head in your phone, newspaper, book, computer, but actually being there in every bite, does that you taste the flavors in a different way.

And it even is healthy in another way because you become aware of when you are full. And then you ought to stop.

And you will feel content.

Because you listened to yourself, your intuition.

That is why we have one, we should listen to it more.

I think that is the way to go.

Love you all♥, including myself 😁

Your truly, always, FlickrGrandma x

I know, I know, these raptors tend to be a common sight, but I absolutely adore them, and it's rare for a wild red tail hawk to not care too much about people and sit around while people walk by. Also rare for me to get a shot of one that isn't on something man made. So I'm happy with this shot!

Apparently there was too much trash on this property for the Junk Yard Dog. He ran off after seeing the squalor he would be forced to live in. This house is abandoned even though it’s condition doesn’t look too bad from the outside. There is the obligatory refrigerator on the porch. It still needs a sofa on the porch before it can be declared a Class A Historic Junk Yard Landmark. You will note that there are several trailers, a tractor, two boats and a camper. More than enough to label it as a Class B Landmark.

This is the last property off this rural road. This dirt driveway is private property, so I’d like to know where the power lines are going. HTT

You just never know what Keefer Lake will offer up on any given day .... this was taken last night as the sun set. The black flies and mosquitoes were eating me alive - but I didn't notice - much. Over the course of about 40 minutes I took 110 photos. I could have taken more but I had to stop to try and take it all in from time-to-time.

Parts 2 and 3 will be posted tomorrow and the day after.

The anatomy of a sunrise that I did years earlier is in the first comment box.

- Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada -

You know it can happen, but you also know the chances of it happening are almost zero.

While you are watching a shrike sitting high in a tree, you see something moving in your peripheral vision, and your attention shifts to it. Your heart starts beating faster. Something is trotting towards you, and you turn on your camera and aim it at the animal.

Shit, it won't focus, I hope it doesn't let me down,........... oh, luckily it works, and you quickly come alongside at 30 meters.

You try to focus, which sometimes works, and other times it doesn't because of the bushes and the tall grass.

Let's hope for a decent photo, that backlight also isn't everything either.

You see the animal looking at you nervously and walking around you, and it disappears behind a row of trees. It will probably cross your path on the path behind you, so you carefully walk back and sit low to have a better angle.

It takes a long time before you see him again, would he still cross, YES!!! there he comes, but you only see his butt, shit... Turn around! Finally!! he goes off the path, now about 100 meters away from you, and then he disappears between the trees to the next field.

About 1 minute later it is all over, and then it slowly dawns on you: you have just seen a wolf!

Atticus didn't know what to think about these shoes so I hid a biscuit in one of them, hoping to capture a cool image. LOL! He could not get the biscuit out because he did not want to damage my shoe! Guess we trained him a little too well. He was never a chewer, even as a puppy.

Nobody knows what prompted the Ursuline nuns in Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver (Belgium) to make the rather bold decision to build this truly magnificent Art Nouveau building. After all, this style was considered hyper-modern in 1900. And yet, this enchanting Winter Garden with its colourful stained glass cupola was considered the most stunning feature of their boarding school for young girls from rich families. What’s even more intriguing is that nobody knows who designed the Winter Garden.

Thanks to Grace! Yeah yeah... I know she's called Whata these days, but... she was the inspiration for this picture and the play on words was far too good to miss out on. You see... she's one of those people whose pictures I always look forward to seeing. There are a few of them, but her recent picture stopped me in my tracks and even got a "Wow!" out of me.

See Grace's lovely picture!

In one of the comments on Flickr someone asked where the hair could be bought from. Whata replied. She's one of the busiest people I know, but has a gooood heart and always helps if she can. Hmm... she might well kill me for saying that though. *snorts*

Anyway.. I ramble! How unlike me!! So I thought "Oooh... that's not a store I have visited before" so... took a trip. Of course I had to IM a complaint to her as I was busily trying on demos... and complained that she was truly enabling my shopping habit... but really we chuckled about it. In fact, we often manage to smile when chatting, but once again I am rambling....

A big thanks to Grace for inspiring this picture. Creating helps preserve my sanity... well as much as I have. *grins*

I know the feeling this lemur has, gazing into space and relaxing in the sun lol

“In me there is darkness,

But with You there is light;

I am lonely,

but You do not leave me;

I am feeble in heart,

but with You there is help;

I am restless, but with You there is peace.

In me there is bitterness,

but with You there is patience;

I do not understand Your ways,

But You know the way for me.”

"Know One"

Now it's clear they live without me

I'm not sure the stars align

They just fear that it's not easy

The stage is empty all the time

The world feels different when you're crazy

Make it work and sing the lines

And their ego fascinates me

We all pray to stay alive

I don't wanna fix it

I don't wanna fix it

I will never turn back time, no

I can't change the way they look at me, look at me

I won't show you what you'll never see, never see

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

Waste the life I dedicated

On the five I turn the page

I'm not so confident to argue

I won't miss you every day

I don't wanna fix it

I don't wanna fix it

I will never turn back time, no

I can't change the way they look at me, look at me

I won't show you what you'll never see, never see

In my eyes, in my eyes

It takes one to know one, right?

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

I will never lie awake again

Dreaming I'm alone

I won't let the voices in my head

Drown the pain I've grown

I can't change the way they look at me, look at me

I won't show you what you'll never see, never see

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

I can't change the way they look at me, look at me

I won't show you what you'll never see, never see

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

In my eyes, in my eyes

They just let your heroes die

she knows when you got snacks! Much like Santa nothing gets past her.

Leave it to Piper to put a smile on my face. She has been my bed warmer (like a hot water bottle) for the last week. When I had tears she would crawl up on my chest and lick the tears off my face. Many people have told me bad things about her breed but I have to say if it wasn't for her I might not be posting at all, she got me to lift the cam again....she really is the sweetest dog ever despite her feisty nature. As of today I had another successful journey around the sun which means more adventures in wild places for me. Stay wild everyone!

The Weeknd - Moth to a flame X Faith Transition

Like a moth to a flame

I'll pull you in, I'll pull you back to what you need initially

It's just one call away

And you'll leave him, you're loyal to me

But this time I let you be

'Cause he seems like he's good for you

And he makes you feel like you should

And all your friends say he's the one

His love for you is true

But does he know you call me when he sleeps?

But does he know the pictures that you keep?

But does he know the reasons that you cry?

Or tell me, does he know where your heart lies?

Where it truly lies

Yeah

You should be with him, I let you go from time

You should stay with him

'Cause he seems like he's good for you

And he makes you feel like you should

And all your friends say he's the one

His love for you is true (hey)

But does he know you call me when he sleeps? (No, no)

But does he know the pictures that you keep? (Oh)

But does he know the reasons that you cry?

Or tell me, does he know where your heart lies?

Where it truly lies

Right here with me, babe

Where it truly lies

My bed, babe

Where it truly lies

In my arms, babe

Where it truly lies

(Oh-oh-oh)

Where it truly lies

Where it truly lies

(Hey)

Where it truly lies

I found this cute little opossum huddled up against the foundation of my office this afternoon where the sunshine had warmed those stones earlier in the day. We know that winter is on the way out when the Virginia opossums start roaming around again. They don't hibernate but they hate cold weather and stay in their dens until we get a welcome thaw.

I know I post a lot of rail images but then their a favourite of mine and close to my home in Ohiwa so why not?

Not an easy bird to catch unaware and quickly departs once alerted but a challenge to get good clean images.

THE SEEKER

I am in a house, I know it well, but I have never been there before. There is no light, just me. The halls are empty, it is without life, without the things to bring it to life, no pictures, no tables, no chairs. It is a bleak house, dark, shadows, and even the light that seeps through the cracks, is dark. In the middle of the room there is foreboding, it is under the floor. I feel my hair stand on end.

I look to the door, the door, into which one must never go.

I stand and know that I can't run, I can't hide, because the dark of the house, is outside too. And I know it's time to leave, but I find myself walking, walking toward the door, the door that I must never open, as it leads to the room, the room into which one must never go.

I am sweating, I want to call out, I am trying to scream, it's primal, but there is no sound, there is no voice. I am unable to call for help. I try to move my arms, but they are frozen.

I am though the door, the room that vibrates with fear, darkness - something is moving in the secret passage, the secret passage that lies beyond the room. It is a narrow corridor, and I am bending to walk into the passage, and it leads to a room above the house, in the attic, I feel the cold, it is icy, and I fear for my very soul - I feel the negative energy that seeping into my skin. I am trying to shout, trying to leave, trying to turn away, wanting to run. A shape emerges out of the wall, it comes to me, draining all the goodness from me, and I feel terrible fear and dread, I want to fight it, but I am helpless, I am powerless, I can't move, but I know now, I must face it, I must fight for my life, and every fibre in me is screaming - and I remember .

I have been here before, and it is always the same, when the presence comes I wake up screaming and sweating, my pulse is racing. I have been through this many times before, and I am shaking and quaking, but I realize - despite these confrontations - I do not wake up dead, just terrified, and I begin to feel that perhaps, perhaps, these is no danger here. I have spent nights telling myself before I fall asleep that if this dream comes to me again, meet fear with love.

Now I know I was dreaming. I am out of the icy house. I am awake, lying in my bed. I am calmer now, I try to move, but nothing happens. I can't move anything, but I can see my room, and I feel a rising panic, and I feel the icy cold. There is someone standing at the end of my bed, staring at me. I am trying to scream and move my arms, to wake up, nothing happens. I see him standing clearly in my room, he has followed me here .

Now I will need to fight, but I can’t move, and he can, what are the rules in this situation, I am powerless. It is terrifying. Move !, Move !, Run ! Nothing. Then I remember “Do not get angry, that gives it power”. I stop struggling, start to calm down. He isn’t moving or doing anything, he never has, he just stands there.

"Hi", I think to myself.

"Can you hear me" it says in a sweet peaceful voice.

Oh that's great, he isn't even hostile, he’s doing his best not to terrify me and here I am like a wild animal, scared of the unknown, that's just great. He has been coming to talk to me, to give me wisdom -but his presence has seemed so terrifying , that he can’t even talk to me. I guess he has been coming and waiting patiently for me to meet him with love, not anger and fear. Well this is embarrassing.

I didn't expect a dialog, and I am now wanting to wake up. It's not fear this time, this guy had a very calm and gentle voice, but James Bond just climbed through my window and I sensed things were only going to go downhill from here.

Note to self, you got to do something about the quality of your dreams - oh, and thanks for the lesson in love and fear.

PS - The next day, many, many years ago - we went swimming with friends in mountain pools. The river water in Africa is dark and you can’t even see your feet in the water. We swam across a large, deep pool. I jumped into a big pothole at the end of the pool. There was a waterfall crashing into one side of it and the sandy bottom felt soothing on my feet. No one else wanted to jump in, and I realized, I had forgotten to be scared. The dream sequence has never returned.

PPS – Lucid dreaming is common, and trying to wake up during a nightmare is too – the immobility comes from your body preventing you from sleepwalking in response to dream situations – so it can feel disturbing while dreaming, but it is a good self preservation mechanism that is there to protect you from real harm. So the fear is gone and I am happy to dream on. And I work with dreams and treat them as an active state. If something is bugging you, think about it before you sleep, it can help resolve while you are off to never, never land 
