We are teaching two robot classes this fall, to help students create their own artistic robots. These classes are taking place at the Lycée Français in Sausalito (for 4th & 5th graders), and at Tam High School in Mill Valley (for adults and teens). During those classes, students learn how to build a robot from scratch, then make them move in a variety of ways, using a programmable Arduino board.
This photo set is about the custom robot kit we created for these classes at Tam Makers, our community makerspace. It includes a laser-cut chassis with motors and wheels, an Arduino Feather M0 with assorted electronics, an Arduino-powered remote control, as well as body parts and servo motors to make them move.
Our robot kit is similar to commercial products, but with a lot more features, at a lower cost. It was a lot of work, but we’re very happy with the final results, and our students seemed to really enjoy the class. We hope this will encourage other teachers, students and makers to create their own animated characters, for art and technology’s sake.

Note to self: Don't know how to remove the light blue fringe outlining the roof that appeared after I reduced exposure of sky? Could crop for a more interesting horizontal frame if only the woman were out of the way. But the lady does show contrast in scale, and I like how she's strolling in opposite direction of the overall vista.

Kearney decided to send more messengers, emphasizing how serious the situation was. Lt Edward Beale, Kit Carson, and a Native whose name has been lost to history volunteered to take the message to San Diego. Pico had scattered his forces in three skirmish lines to block against just such an attempt, and the three had to remove their boots, crawl on their bellies through cacti, and work through close masses of troops before wandering some 48km barefoot to San Diego. All three made it, the Native passing word to Stockton while he was at a ball at Bandini's home on the night of December 9. Beale arrived four hours later, and Carson early the next morning. Finally seeing the danger, Stockton immediately outfitted a relief force.
Meanwhile after four days on Mule Hill Kearney's troops were running low on supplies. Kearney had already ordered all nonessential items burned. Ironically an attempt by the Californios to drive off the Americans by stampeding a herd of mules through the lines the night before helped provide more meat for the hungry troopers, but now Kearney was preparing for a breakout for December 11. Just before the attack was to occur, a force of 200 sailors and marines scattered the Californios and marched up Mule Hill to loud cheers. After things had quieted down, a Californio fired a single shot at Mule Hill before he left, and the battle was over.

This is Kit. We served on the Historic Resources Committee for the Town of Camden together a few years ago. She has MS and is in a wheelchair now. I have some friends that ride for her in the Bike MS: Ride Bar Harbor, which raises money to help more than 2,500 Maine residents, and their families, affected by multiple sclerosis. Her team is called "Parker's Pedalers".
