A friend of mine let me in on his little secret - - a Great Horned Owl nest at the edge of a forest overlooking a farmers field. This pair of owls have been there for 3 years according to him - - and so I was allowed to join in to see how things were progressing.
At this stage - - mom is still on the nest, and she appears to have fresh kill sitting on the nest with her. We would visit 2 more times over the next 3 weeks - - so more to come !

In what was, by then, a rare-mileage move for the Batten Kill, Alco RS-3 #4116 brings a long cut of spine cars west across Skellie Road near East Greenwich on the line between Greenwich Junction and Greenwich. This was back when the truss bridge over the Batten Kill River and State Route 372 in Greenwich was still in service, and the Batten Kill stored these spine cars west of Greenwich on the line to Thomson. The plan on this particular afternoon was to bring the cars to Greenwich, run around them, and then shove them towards Thomson. If that had happened, it would have been the one and only time I caught them on that section. Unfortunately, however, they derailed in the middle of the woods a bit west of here...

An alternate take of a waterfall along South Road near Westbrookville, NY that flows into the Basha Kill.
Recently back from a trip to Bandhavgarth, India to see the magnificent Bengal Tigers. However, a real bonus was this Asian Leopard - a very rarely seen cat, even rarer out in the open, in daylight with a recently killed deer. Such a beautiful cat, in a magnificent part of India.
With a collection of classic and historic Alcos on the property a trip to the Batten Kill always results in something cool to see. This scene shows from left to right the ex Delaware and Hudson, now Southern New England Railroad RS-36 5015 being restored to its grand D&H paint scheme, Battten Kill RS-3 4116 and the newly restored Alco S-2 D&H 3012 just returning from a day of work along the old D&H Washington Branch.

FYI: This link only shows you the cover of the book. This book is not gruesome at all. It is packed w/info about how our food is grown and brought to market. It does tell about cows and how they meet their demise...only one paragraph...so nothing to worry about.
My vet clinic is in the process of moving to a new buildiing/ location this weekend so I will hold off on taking in cats until monday, Everyone have a super weekend. More cows below.
Back to some Safari photos, taken back in January in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.
We were incredibly lucky to witness this mother Cheetah take down a Thomson's Gazelle (I think it is a Tommie). The chase happened incredibly quickly, gazelle sprinting in panic, while the unlucky gazelle did not move fast enough. Out of frame is its nearly adult cub, who watched mom do the hard work and has started to feed.
