The infinity pool at the kia Ora Resort on Rangiroa, French Polynesia. My wife is posing at the far end of the pool. The large ship on the horizon is the “Aranui 5”, a mixed passenger/cargo freighter that sails the islands. It was in port this day delivering supplies to the islands 2,567 inhabitants.

We think of performance-orientated Kias as a more recent phenomenon, given that the Pro Cee’d GT is widely seen as the Korean automaker’s first proper stab at producing a hot car. The thing is, however; it isn’t. In fact, if you go back to the mid-to-late 1990s, you’ll see that Kia sold a two-seater drop-top sports car. And it was called the Elan.
Sound familiar? It should, because Elan is a name given to two Lotus roadsters, a rear-wheel drive car from the 1960s, and the front-wheel drive ‘M100’ Elan produced from 1989 onwards. When production of the M100 wound up in 1995 - with fewer sold than Lotus had hoped - Kia came along and bought the rights to the design.
The company then produced its own version of the car in South Korea - for the South Korean market - with the original 165bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged Isuzu-sourced engine swapped for a naturally-aspirated 149bhp 1.8-litre engine. The suspension was raised slightly, and the rear light clusters were of Kia’s own design, as opposed to Renault Alpine GTA units found on the Lotus. Various interior parts were also replaced with Kia items.
Around 1000 Kia Elans were sold, making the car much rarer than the Lotus version, of which 3855 were sold. Production ran from 1996-1999. Despite never being officially imported into Europe, examples of the Kia do very occasionally come up for sale on this continent.

IAA Frankfurt 2019
Another manufacturer which didn't rent a stand at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. Still, Kia parked several XCeeds outside and you could make a test drive with one. The new XCeed is the fourth addition to the Ceed lineup, which currently consists of a five-door hatchback, five-door stationcar, five-door Proceed (sportier stationcar in the same vein as the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake) and now the new five-door XCeed crossover. It comes with 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engines and a 1.6-litre diesel engine. A plug-in hybrid will be added to the range shortly.

Here's the rental vehicle we drove the most recent time we were in Wisconsin. It's a Kia Sportage shown on Main Street in Monticello, in front of Gempeler's, a fine family-owned grocery store in that town.

The second generation Kia K2 was launched in November 2016, succeeding the successful old model, which has the size of the Kia Rio, but is only offered in China and Russia, in the latter market as Kia Rio, where it one of the most popular cars on the market. Kia once again offers a sedan and hatchback, but the hatchback now comes with a rugged 'cross' look as standard and is named Kia KX Cross.

The Kia K2 was launched in China in 2011 as a successor to the second generation Rio and is based on the Hyundai Accent/Verna platform. Unlike the Accent/Verna/Solaris, the Kia K2 was only marketed in China and in Russia, where they confusingly named it Kia Rio. Both a sedan and less popular hatchback are offered. The Kia K2 is one of Kia's most popular cars on the Chinese market, selling over 140,000 examples each year ever since 2012. Late 2016 Kia launched the second generation K2.
Kia recently started the second generation of this crossover model. Once again it's available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric versions. This is a plug-in hybrid model with a black rear pillar.

The Kia EV6 is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Kia. Introduced in March 2021, it is the first Kia dedicated electric vehicle, and the first model developed on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) similar to the Hyundai Ioniq It is also the first model to be named under the new nomenclature designated for a line of Kia electric cars, which will range from EV1 to EV9. The EV6 is the 2022 European Car of the Year.
February of 2022, the EV6 was named Car of the Year, which is a first for the Kia brand. The award was given in Geneva, Switzerland

From the department of rare cars. The first generation of the Kia K900 was introduced in 2012. It's also called K9 OR Quoris on other markets. It shares its platform and the 5.0 litre V8 engine with some large Hyundai and Genesis models.

KIA Granbird is one of the best-selling coach models in Korea. It is also the only Korean-built tourist / express bus with a 12.5 meter length option. Silkroad is the 12,490mm long high-decker variant with overall height of 3,550mm.
Hyundai Powertec machines are adpoted by KIA Granbird series. This particular vehicle, 경남76 바 2062, is driven by a 12L Powertec 425 hp diesel machine having maximum torque of 193 kg.m.

The Kia KX3 was launched as a prototype in November 2014 and made it to the market in April 2015. It is produced by the Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia joint venture. The Kia KX3 is a compact crossover based on the same platform as its twin and rival, the Hyundai ix25. Unlike the ix25, which is also produced in Brazil, India and Russia as Hyundai Creta, the Kia KX3 is only offered in China. It was facelifted this year (photo). Sales are nothing to write home about, and sales are down dramatically due to the ongoing anti-Korea sentiment in China due to the anti-missile system (THAAD) of South Korea.
Back in 1995 the Sportage was one of the first models Kia sold in Europe. It was based on the Mazda Bongo van. For some years European versions were built by Karmann in Germany.
Seen in Vietnam 2023 - Series built since 2020, but unfortunately not for Europe - in Vietnam it appears to sell well!
