A small to medium-sized heritage apple of great character. Originated in the Gloucester area pf England around 1700. Skin is a dull highly russeted green and/or red, often golden brown. Crisp, sweet yellow flesh with good acids which mellow in storage. Aromatic. Stores well. Good eating, cooking and cider apple.

For almost 10 years, my buddy Brandon and I have seen a movie sometime during the Christmas holiday. This started out with Lord of the Rings, lead to King Kong, The Aviator, Avatar, Tron, and now The Adventures of Tintin. It's a great tradition that I'm glad to take part of! I see a lot of movies throughout the year, and despite the ridiculous price, I can't watch a movie without popcorn!

After donating the old brewhouse to fellow Bermondsey brewery Partizan, in 2012, The Kernel now has a larger brewhouse with a capacity of 3200 litre per batch. According to the assistant brewer they typically brew three times a week, fermenting their ales for up to two weeks. The Kernel does offer some of their beer on keg, but most of it is bottled.
In this photo the mash tun and brew kettle can be seen to the left, the malt mill is on the scaffolding up above the mash tun and a hot water tank stands on the right.

Maize kernels showing symptoms of charcoal ear rot (Macrophomina phaseolina). At harvest kernels are pale yellow with black streaking below the pericarp, and the ear is loose and chaffy. Kernels are easily removed from the cob, and they show small, round, black, pinhead-like sclerotia on the surface.

Maize kernel showing symptoms of Nigrospora ear rot (Khuskia oryzae, anam. Nigrospora oryzae). Kernels are discolored and easily removed from the cob. Under close examination, cob tissues and kernel tips show small black masses of spores.

A bottle of Export Stout London 1890 from The Kernel microbrewery in London, England.
Export Stout London 1890 is a 7,7% abv stout, probably brewed after a London stout recipe from 1890. It poured a black color with a light brown head. The aroma was dry, ashy and with roasted coffee notes. The body was medium heavy with a creamy carbonation. The flavor started with a mild caramel note, dry coffee and acidity from the carbonation. The mild sweetness stayed throughout the beer and lingered in the finish which had a good roasted bitterness. Unlike the overly sweet American stouts or the very dry Irish, this stout lands on a harmonic middle ground - it's well balanced and very drinkable. Great brewing!

The Kernel, based close to the historic heart of London brewing in Southwark, was founded by Evin O'Riordain, Chrigl Luthy and Toby Munn in 2009. Today it's one of the hottest new micro breweries in England, with a number of great beers in their line-up, from pale ales to stouts.
