Wheat kernels infected with Karnal bunt (Tilletia indica). Karnal bunt is not easily detected prior to harvest, since only a few kernels per spike are usually affected, but following harvest diseased kernels are easily observed. A mass of black teliospores replaces a portion of the endosperm; the pericarp may be intact or ruptured. Diseased kernels also give off a fetid or fishy odor when crushed.

Never pawned or something, all plain vanilla all the time. Syncing with iTunes on Mac one sunday, then out of nowhere: error, reboot, restore, kernel panic, dead. new one.
A CIMMYT research assistant displays maize kernels that have been infected with Fusarium graminearum (teleomorph Gibberella zeae) in the lab, during artificial inoculation of an experimental wheat plot at the centerās headquarters at El BatĆ”n, Mexico. Inoculation ensures a high disease pressure to enable scientists to study resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB), and one technique is to spread these infected kernels in the field, allowing the dispersal of ascospores, one of the two types of spores produced by the fungus. However, this method is somewhat complicated and can be unreliable, and is no longer used in CIMMYT. Instead, a CO2-driven backpack sprayer is used at flowering to deliver a liquid inoculum of F. graminearum conidia, the other type of spore, which are easily produced in the lab in large quantities. CIMMYT screens several thousand wheat lines for FHB resistance every year. Resistant materials are the result of ongoing breeding efforts, and may be used further in CIMMYTās breeding program or enter international nurseries like the Fusarium head blight screening nursery (FHBSN).

Maize ears and seed of the Mexican landrace "Apachito", collected in the state of Chihuahua. It is flint in type, and can be both white and red in color.
CIMMYTās maize germplasm bank contains about 28,000 unique samples of cultivated maize and its wild relatives, teosinte and Tripsacum. These include about 26,000 samples of maize landracesātraditional, locally-adapted varieties that are rich in diversity. Many have been developed over millennia by farmers in Mexico, the cropās center of origin. The bank both conserves this diversity and makes it available as a resource for breeding.

A bottle of Suke Quto Coffee IPA from The Kernel microbrewery in London, England.
Suke Quto Coffee IPA is a 6,5% abv india pale ale brewed with coffee from Square Mile Coffee Roasters in London. It poured a hazy orange color with a frothy white head. It sported a nice fruity aroma with a mild, fresh coffee note and some piny hops. The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a creamy texture. The flavor started out with a mild caramel sweetness and some fresh coffee, before some piny hops appeared. The finish was fairly dry with a good hop bitterness.
I was really impressed by this IPA, it was harmonic, simple and elegant. Very well made and dangerously drinkable.
Thanks to Jonas for bringing the bottle.
The Kernel, based close to the historic heart of London brewing in Southwark, was founded by Evin O'Riordain, Chrigl Luthy and Toby Munn in 2009. Today it's one of the hottest new micro breweries in England, with a number of great beers in their line-up, from pale ales to stouts.

HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL
The kernel of the complex developed as the Queen Victoria Homes at Wentworth Falls is the fine country retreat built by a highly significant businessman. Sir Kelso King and his first wife, around 1890. King's wide interests in investment, business and mining as well as music and the theatre, make him a figure of State significance over his long life. Although he did not retain his country retreat after the early death of his first wife, King's connection with the site, expressed in a fine house and distinguished plantings, is highly important, although often overlooked.
The treatment of tuberculosis by exposure to a bracing mountain climate which was
preferred in the later Victorian period and early twentieth century led to a group of prominent physicians such as Dr Sinclair and Sir Philip Sydney Jones establishing a series of sanatoria in the Blue Mountains. The Queen Victoria Home at Wentworth Falls was the first, followed by Bodington, also in Wentworth Falls (WF 047) and the R.T. Hall Home at Hazelbrook (H 002 ). The continuous use of the Kings Tableland premises for health care for 96 years and the importance of the buildings and grounds give the complex heritage significance at the State level.
The property was first developed by Kelso King, whose wide interests in investment, business and mining as well as music and the theatre, make him a figure of State significance over his long life. As a home for consumptives, the complex was fundamentally influenced by its first medical superintendent, Dr Malcolm Sinclair and a foundation Trustee Dr Philip Sydney Jones, doctors of considerable significance.
Jones was a member of the University of Sydney Senate for many years, and Vice-
Chancellor from 1904 to 1906, a founder of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, a Trustee of the Australian Museum as well as being the Foundation President of the National Association for the Prevention and Cure of Consumption. (Garrett, Australian Dictionary of Biography, IV 490-491) Sir Philip Sydney Jones is a figure of State importance.
His son, George, who designed the complex over the years 1902 to 1921, was a major figure in the architectural profession and the Institute of Architecture in New South Wales and is of State significance, though less important than his father.
Malcolm Sinclair, a Glasgow-trained physician specialising in tuberculosis, was invited to come to Australia in 1903 to run the new Sanatorium. He supervised the first five formative years of the institution and then in 1908 left to found Bodington Sanatorium on his own estate also in Wentworth Falls (see VVF 047). After selling Bodington and serving in World War I, Dr Sinclair maintained a general medical practice in Wentworth Falls until his death in 1941 (Our Past Blue Mountaineers, VI I 25). Dr Sinclair is a figure of considerable Local significance.
This room really got to me. Setting up was really eerie, the feeling of death was thick in my mind, almost disturbing. Took the shot and got out of there.
1 almond (1.2 g)
1 oz (23 whole kernels) (28.35 g)
1 cup, sliced (92 g)
1 cup, ground (95 g)
1 cup, slivered (108 g)
1 cup, whole (143 g)
(1 ounce = 28.3495 grams).
* I weighed 1 cup of almonds & found that it equals 4 ounces. The suggested serving size is one ounce which equals approx:
1.35 mg of iron per one ounce serving(2.7 mg of iron are in 1/2 cup of almonds).
Overview:
Walnuts and almonds are both good choices for healthy snacks, as they provide healthy fats, protein and minerals. The nutritional value of each nut varies, however, and you may wish to choose one over the other based on your nutrition needs. Walnuts, although, higher in fat, are slightly higher in some minerals. Almonds, on the other hand, are higher in protein, fiber and vitamin E.
Calories:
A 1 oz. serving of walnuts contains more than 20 calories more than 1 oz. of almonds, mostly because they contain a higher percentage of fat. One serving of almonds contains 163 calories, which are made up of approximately 15 percent protein, 72 percent fat and 13 percent carbohydrates. One serving of walnuts contains 185 calories, which are made up of approximately 9 percent protein, 84 percent fat and 7 percent carbohydrates.
Protein:
One serving of almonds contains 6 g of protein, which is 13 percent of the recommended amount for women and 11 percent for men. Walnuts are lower in protein, with only 4.3 g of protein, which is 9 percent for women and 8 percent for men. Walnuts and almonds are not complete proteins, as they do not contain all nine of the essential amino acids, which are those amino acids that must be obtained through food because they are not produced by your body.
Fat:
Walnuts are higher in fat than almonds, with 18.5 g per serving as opposed to 14 g per serving. However, the fat in both types of nuts is primarily polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which do not raise cholesterol like saturated fat does. Both types of nuts are low in saturated fat, with one serving of walnuts containing 1.7 g and one serving of almonds containing 1.1 g.
Carbohydrates:
Both almonds and walnuts are low in carbohydrates, with 6.1 g and 3.9 g, respectively. Almonds, however, contain almost twice as much fiber as walnuts, with 3.5 g per serving as opposed to 1.9 g per serving. Most adults need approximately 28 g of fiber per day. The fiber in nuts is soluble fiber, which can help lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.
Vitamins and Minerals:
Walnuts and almonds are both high in copper and manganese, but walnuts are slightly higher in both minerals. One serving of walnuts provides 50 percent of the recommended amount of copper and one serving of almonds provides 31 percent. One serving of walnuts provides 54 percent of the recommended amount of manganese for women and 42 percent for men while one serving of almonds provides 36 percent for women and 28 percent for men. Almonds are much higher in vitamin E than almonds. One serving of almonds supplies 50 percent of the recommended amount, while one serving of walnuts supplies only 1 percent.

Wheat kernel showing symptoms of black point, also known as kernel smudge. This can be caused by Cochliobolus sativus, Alternaria alternata, or other Alternaria or Fusarium species, as well as physiological problems. The pericarps of maturing wheat kernels turn dark brown to black, with the discoloration usually restricted to the germ-end of the kernel.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

Wheat grain samples, with 20 kernels in each, showing various levels of damage due to stem rust (Puccinia graminis), from unaffected (left), to 100% damage (right). This shows the effect of the disease in loss of yield and grain quality. The sample on the far left shows healthy, plump grain that has been protected from rust, for example by resistance or by chemical control. The progression from left to right shows increasing levels of disease. Arriving at the sample on the far right, these small, discolored and shriveled grains are very likely to be lost during threshing and have almost no flour content.
In this case the stem rust infection is by the virulent Ug99 race and the samples were taken from the ongoing screening program at the Njoro research station in Kenya. The station is part of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), which is working in partnership with CIMMYT to identify sources of resistance to Ug99. This strain of the disease, which emerged in Uganda in 1999, is already endemic in the area, making it possible to use Njoro as a testing ground for wheats from all over the world. More than 30,000 wheat lines are now being screened each year.
For more information on the disease, see CIMMYT's Wheat Doctor: wheatdoctor.cimmyt.org/en/pests-a-diseases/list/122?task=....

Day 79 of 365: "Popcorn Flick"
For almost 10 years, my buddy Brandon and I have seen a movie sometime during the Christmas holiday. This started out with Lord of the Rings, lead to King Kong, The Aviator, Avatar, Tron, and now The Adventures of Tintin. It's a great tradition that I'm glad to take part of! I see a lot of movies throughout the year, and despite the ridiculous price, I can't watch a movie without popcorn!
