This little guy works all day at hiding the kernels all over the woods! Then when that is empty he manages to haul away the cob too!

Quite colorfully adorned and looking akin to a giant corn cob, Colorado Sweet Gold SW-1 63 poses at the company's Johnstown facility. Dubbed "The Kernel", CSG 63 was built by EMD in 1940 as Elgin, Joliet & Eastern 233. The unit came west in the 1960s when it was sold to the Great Western Railway. It became GWR 63 and began working the famed Colorado sugar beet hauler. During the 1990s, 63 was sold to Colorado Sweet Gold and received this attractive look. As of 2025, it continues to operate for CSG.

“Walnuts have a shell, and they have a kernel. Religions are the same. They have an essence, but then they have a protective coating. This is not the only way to put it. But it’s my way. So the kernels are the same. However, the shells are different.” ~ Huston Smith

Huston Cummings Smith (May 31, 1919 – December 30, 2016) was an influential scholar of religious studies in the United States. He authored at least thirteen books on world's religions and philosophy.

A popcorn kernel's strong hull contains the seed's hard, starchy shell endosperm with 14–20% moisture, which turns to steam as the kernel is heated. Pressure from the steam continues to build until the hull literally explodes, allowing the kernel to forcefully expand, to 20 to 50 times its original size, and then cool leaving behind a yummy treat.

Popcorn is often considered a grain but it is also considered a fruit.

Going close up on one of those decorative, multicolored Indian corn ears. Trimmed, but otherwise straight off the camera. =)

couple of jackdaw shots from yesterday in really poor light

Corn is the most widely grown crop in the Americas with 332 million metric tons grown annually in the United States alone (that's a lot of popcorn...). The variegated colors come from the plant's genetic diversity.

One of my new blessings this year has been the unique opportunity to share my photos with my Flickr friends all over the world, and to be encouraged and inspired by you all. May your hearts always be filled with love, your plates with bounty, and your vision with beauty. To my American Flickrites, Happy Thanksgiving. To all of you, my heartfelt gratitude for your generosity and kindness. I hope you always have much to be thankful for.

Kärnan (Danish: Kernen, both literally The Core) is a medieval tower in Helsingborg, Scania, in southern Sweden. It is the only part remaining of a larger Danish fortress which, along with the fortress Kronborg on the opposite of Oresund, controlled the entranceway to the Baltic Sea.

Kärnan (The Kernel) is Top 1 of Tourist Attractions in Helsingborg.

We harvested this ear of indian corn from our garden this fall. The cob is about 3 inches long but the kernels, all 5 or 6 of them, are full size.

Oddly, I watched the grebe dive several times and come up with corn kernels from below the surface; presumably this was corn that had been provided for the ducks and sunk to the bottom of the pond. | Fort Lowell Park, Tucson, Arizona | January 30, 2021

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

(not good at making titles, i know)

this sort of happened out of boredom, but i really want to develop this idea.

100 views! thanks guys :D

The original image, 'korner kernel' was captured for the Macro Mondays theme: "negative space". However, on perusing Lunaryuna's submission for Sliders Sunday in that week, I discovered something called Google DeepDream. Soooo....

The original image has been run through the DeepDream generator for 9 iterations (apparently design elements can become stronger with each iteration). I have then sandwiched the original image to the deepdream generated image. I have masked out a large 'eye' that deepdream put on the 'kernel creature' (hey, it just looked unrealistic. LOL). Otherwise the background imagery is largely unchanged, other than for some selective lightening, darkening and vibrance.

I've grown to quite like this kernel creature, strutting through the dark cavern, with all the other cavern creatures looking on from the shadows.

Playing with the macro functionality of the Sigma 18-250mm DC Macro lens using my kitchen counter (has downlighting spots) and my evening snack as the subject.

My 4 year old and I had a great time discovering these pieces in one bag of popcorn. We were pretty impressed we could create an illustration of what happens to a kernel in the bag once that microwave button is pushed. :)

The shield bug Eurygaster integriceps has enjoyed its wheat juice cocktail from this kernel.
