Exhibition: The Political Line - Keith Haring
‘The Political Line’ is a major exhibition on the life and work of influential American artist and activist Keith Haring (1958-1990). With his unmistakably unique style, Keith Haring, a protégé of Andy Warhol, spawned a revolution in art during the 1980s.

This piece in Collingwood by Heesco, Conrad Bizjak, Chehehe and Ling, Phibs, Dvate, Sabeth and Duke is a tribute to two of the most significant and influential artists of the late twentieth century in Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat both of whose lives were cut tragically short. “Crossing Lines” is an exhibition of Haring and Basquiat’s work that is currently showing at the National Gallery of Victoria.
I wanted to have a go at a Keith Haring style build. I just couldn't get the lighting anywhere near right :(
If you look at it from a distance hopefully it resembles the style.

For the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, the then relatively unknown Keith Haring not only wanted to display his existing works but also aimed to create new pieces, including the Amsterdam Notes. Additionally, he painted a large canvas that served as a veil above the monumental staircase and crafted a massive sea monster on the facade of the museum's former storage facility in 1986 (now located on the premises of the Central Market Halls). This latter work became visible to the public again in 2018 when the panels covering the mural were removed
"Graffiti artist" Keith Haring was unique to me when I first saw his work. Graffiti? Artist? Oh come on now! Weren't these mutually exclusive? He proved that, if fact, no they weren't. His work always seemed to convey such human qualities: a sense of warmth, humor, sexuality and/or beauty. He seemed to live life so fully, for the brief time he was here, before succumbing to AIDS. His work was vibrant, he worked with youth and helped fund relief for those in need through the sale of his art.
I fell in love this this image the first time I saw it. It captures his humor and visual sense and became the perfect collaboration with Annie Leibovitz who committed it to film.

Hello, Flickr! I have been away for a few weeks, and am happy to be back. It will be some time before I am caught up, however.
Keith Haring's elephant
This papier-mâché elephant, seen here at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, wasn’t constructed by Haring, but was left over from a costume exhibition curated by Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Andy Warhol bought the sculpture, which was originally painted pink, as a prop for the star-studded event, and when the show was over it ended up at Warhol’s studio. In a little-known turn of events, Jean-Michel Basquiat—not Haring—first painted on the elephant, giving it white toenails, doodles on its ears, and what resembled a large shock of white hair at the top of its trunk. Fred Hughes, Warhol’s longtime business manager, had the elephant repainted white so that Haring could cover it with his signature figures.
In an April 20, 1985, entry in The Andy Warhol Diaries, Warhol says he preferred Basquiat’s version: “Jean Michel and Victor [Hugo] painted some stuff on it, but not much, but still I would’ve kept it a Jean Michel even though it wasn’t much of one, but Fred thought it would be better as a Keith Haring, and so Keith is going to paint it now that it’s white.”
