This was a custom order. The word patches were sent to me and I quilted them on as if I were doing a ticker tape quilt.

Castellet i la Gornal, Barcelona (Spain).

ENGLISH

The castle of Castellet is located in the municipality of Castellet i la Gornal in the Alt Penedès area, south of Barcelona and just a few kilometres from Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú. It was one of the fortresses which, around the year 1000, formed the frontier between the Spanish Marches (modern-day Catalonia) and Al-Andalus, which in those days covered the rest of the Iberian peninsula, one of a dense network of castles and towers for the defence of the frontier with the Muslim territories.

The first reference to the castle dates back to a document from the year 977. The fortress was of major strategic importance until the 16th century. Over these centuries the control of the site alternated between several houses of feudal lords, the counts of Barcelona (in the 11th century) and the crown of Catalonia-Aragon (in the 15th century). From then onwards, the castle went through successive periods of decadence until it fell into ruin.

Between 1928 and 1930 the castle underwent partial restoration work, covering the structures of the central and western parts. The southern part was not affected by this work, which formed its profile today. After so many years the castle was declared a cultural site of national interest, but this was not enough to ensure the preservation of the fortress.

CASTELLANO

I officiated a wedding today. It's my last official act as pastor of the church I've served for two years.

Each county in Pennsylvania issues its own marriage license. They're all very similar, but the wording varies between counties. Today, I saw for the first time the certificate that this county gives to the couple who have been married. Under my signature, it says, "Keepsake Only."

There's definitely a future sermon here.

Tuncurry's historic #KeepsakeCottage has been saved from destruction after being demolished from its site in Manning Street Tuncurry in mid 2015.

Despite strong opposition from the general public and the Great Lakes Historical Society Great Lakes Council approved a demolition order for Historic Keepsake Cottage in March 2015 which was subsequently carried out.

Although the Great Lakes Historical Society had always wanted the building and had believed that the owner would remove the demolished building to land adjacent to the museum, this did not happen. The building was declared unsafe by council officers and subsequently approved for demolition.

It was only due to good fortune that Darawank resident Andrew Payne heard of the impending demise of the building in early 2015.

He made an offer to the owner, Harley Longbottom and it was agreed that the building could be removed to Andrew's property at Darawank at Andrew's own expense where it was to be eventually erected adjacent to the historic old Darawank School, which had been previously renovated by Andrew on the site.

It is my understanding that Andrew also paid a nominal fee of $1000 to purchase the demolished building materials though he was not given the stone steps and fireplace stones. Council took them, for what purpose it's not known.

This purchase at least helped ensure the demolition was carried out in a way that reduced damage to the various parts, making re-erection a little less problematic.

The images above show the amazing progress of the restoration of Keepsake Cottage, which is expected to be completed sometime during 2019.

While Andrew has done the bulk of the renovation there have been many volunteers who have assisted along the way.

A big thanks to all involved in the resurrection of Keepsake Cottage from the relatives of Simon Hemmy and Vincenzo Fazio and from all interested in preservation of the regions fast disappearing history.

Keepsake Cottage History

Keepsake Cottage formerly known as Fazio Cottage, was built in 1901 by Simon Hemmy, an engineer at John Wright's sawmill, and later, on the tug Marian Mayfield, with much of the timber salvaged from the wreck of the coastal trader 'Empress of India' which was loaded with sawn timber when she ran aground on July 23, 1900 on the Cape Hawke bar, soon breaking up, and spilling all the timber onto Tuncurry Beach.

In 1902, soon after Hemmy had married Hannah Newton, he sold the cottage to Italian fisherman Vincenzo Fazio who had arrived in Tuncurry in 1896. Fazio soon completed the cottage and built a small shop extension on the back facing Kent Street. This shop became Tuncurry's first fish shop and since then has almost been constantly occupied with various businesses over the years.

The Great Lakes Historical Society remembers Vincenzo Fazio as a great lover of music and, being a fisherman, as tough as they come but he was also a renowned entertainer, able to play a variety of instruments including his beloved squeezebox.

Vince was a pioneer of the Great Lakes fishing industry, with the Fazio name today historically more connected to the transport industry after Vince realised that there was a dollar in transporting fish to the railhead after the line reached Taree in 1912.

From those who came before

During the Jazz Age:

Jessamyn, who worked as a cook in Daisy Buchanan's English estate, longed to be reunited with her daughter Cilla as much as Cilla yearned to be with her. The year that Cilla had spent in Switzerland getting medical treatment had seemed like an eternity to Jessamyn. She often imagined seeing her little girl.

And now, here she was! Back in England!

"I love you so much, my little Cilla," Jessamyn said as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I love you, Mummy," Cilla answered in a soft voice.

Their journey through life together was renewed, with many unexpected twists and turns in store...

Collected seashells today. I really like what I found. Those two rainbow ones in the bottom left are among my favorites.

A Christmas decoration from the 1950s. Comes out every year to remind me of home.

My baby shoes, and my toddler picture in my front yard. These may be the shoes in the shot, but not certain, but considering I am child seven of eight, it is astonishing that my mother kept these for me.

on my bed...I have had this cat for almost 28 years. My mom made if for me and we have pictures of me with it when I was one yr old. I think it used to have a dress that is long gone now...I'm just impressed that both eyes are still intact.

Found this keepsake box at Daiso for $2. It's covered with a diamond patterned paper. The embossing is subtle enough to accept quilling pieces easily.

"I can't get used to living here

While my heart is broke, my tears I cry for you..."*

As the sun streams through the window on the day after Bastille Day, Wyn is surrounded by shadows and light, a juxtaposition that reflects her mood. Her family thinks of Wyn as their little angel because of her positive and hopeful attitude. Yet, after the latest of what seems like a steady outburst of national and international tragedies, even an angel can feel dejected.

Wyn contemplates a medal that she has come across from St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York and contemplates the words engraved on it: "Guardian angel, protect me."

These words play over and over in her mind as images haunt her:

The man sitting on the ground next to the covered body of a child...*

The babydoll laying next to the covered body of the child who loved it...*

The drawing of the babydoll crying as she touches the lifeless hand of the child who had treasured her companionship...**

Good luck sachets from my son and daughter-in-law's wedding in China, 2015

My great uncle received this box while serving overseas during WW1.

Decorative brass tin sent by Princess Mary to members of the British, Colonial and Indian Armed Forces for Christmas 1914. Over 426,000 of these tins were distributed to those serving on Christmas Day 1914. The tins were filled with various items including tobacco, confectionary, spices, pencils, a Christmas card and a picture of the princess.

The idea was the initiative of Princess Mary, the 17-year-old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. Princess Mary organised a public appeal which raised the funds to ensure that 'every Sailor afloat and every Soldier at the front' received a Christmas present.

Due to the strong public support for the gift, which saw £162,591 12s 5d raised, the eligibility for the gift was widened to include every person 'wearing the King's uniform on Christmas Day 1914', about 2,620,019 servicemen and women.
