Muruga dieu tutélaire du peuple tamoul. Chef des armées célestes, divinité de la jeunesse et de la guerre. Il est monté sur un paon, destructeur de serpents (les attachements corporels...) et brandit le Vel, la lance dont les trois parties (tige, partie large du fer et pointe) sont la puissance, l’intelligence et la victoire. Ce fils de Shiva est aussi appelé Soupramanien (Subrahmania)... On le vénère avec éclat à l’occasion du Kavadi et la plupart des grands temples urbains lui sont consacrés.
Il est le plus jeune fils de Siva et de Shakti, et le frère de Ganesh. Il est l’enfant divin d’amour, de compassion de sagesse et le dieu de la jeunesse et de la beauté. Il représente la sagesse de la lumière et efface l’obscurité. Grâce à son Vel "le javelot" mais aussi "l' esprit" les hindous disent qu'il procure la force, les moyens de subsistance, la protection et aide l'homme à atteindre le succès en effaçant sa nature arrogante .
