Some pictures taken by the late Michael Cleary. I think this may be 1997 - but other suggestions would be welcome.
In the Karlsruhe area the distinction between 'tram' and 'train' is blurred - as light rail cars run over the mainline railway system.
The maze of catenary somehow corresponds with the maze of tracks on the "north end" of Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof. But in fact there's far more wires than tracks because of all the lateral support wires, links and stuff. Mindboggling nonetheless.
This is the sort of electrification I can handle as a photographer - the only vertical structures are lamp posts. In recent years the technology has taken the individual-support-post style, losing all the elegance and eventually cluttering the view. Clutter is the way to go as it seems.
What adds to the vintage scene is the classic outline of a V60 class diesel-hydraulic switcher sorting coaches to the coach yard off to the left.

Ex German Navy frigate Karlsruhe, laid up at Kiel Naval Arsenal in Kiel, Germany.
Karlsruhe is one of eight Bremen class frigates built for the (West) German Navy in the 1980s. In the context of the Cold War, these ships were primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare and convoy escorts. However, after 1990, the frigates would be used in quite a different role, being frequently deployed in NATO, EU and UN operations in the Mediterrenean and the Red Sea. Karlsruhe was decomissioned in 2017 and is now laid up at Kiel, awaiting her fate to be sunk as a target.

German Navy corvette Karlsruhe in a floating dock of the Norderwerft yard in Hamburg, Germany.
Karlsruhe is currently under construction and is part of a second batch of K130 type corvettes for the German Navy. Interestingly, these ships are being built decentralised: while the foreship was built by German Naval Yards in Kiel, the aftship was manufactured by Peene-Werft in Wolgast. Both sections are then joined at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg.
